You should stay on the main pier part of the lake near the scenic Starbucks. The opposite side is kind of tacky. Low rent. The walking trail around the lake is magical. If you get fatigued, a shuttle bus stops at designated stops and will take you back. Renting bikes is fine, but be careful.

Hi! My memory is a bit foggy but if i remember correctly i took the trail from somewhere near Sun Moon Lake Circular Walk all the way to the Xiangshan Scenic Lookout (if you google maps this, you’ll see the path we took and the many spots you can stop at). My fav spot was as 向山落羽松 (i cant read Chinese but the google maps photos look like what i think was my favourite haha 😅). I know other people who spent longer riding their bikes around the lake so I’m sure there are trails and plenty of other scenic spots that i didn’t get to see. Hope this helps! 😊
