We spent a day at the Thailand/Malaysia border town Danok - A town full with suprises & friendly locals
After visiting the Thailand/Malaysia border town Padang Besar last week, we went for another trip to the Thailand/Malaysia border. This time we drove to Danok, which is another border town here in Songkhla, southern Thailand. This town is also basically separated by the border. One side is in Thailand and the other side is in Malaysia. How is life like in such a border town here at the Thailand Malaysia border? We are going to explore around, meet some locals, get some food and see what’s going on here in Danok.
Could you image living in a town like Danok, that is separated by an international border? Let me know in the comments ⬇️
If you missed my border town vlog from last week ➡️ • Visiting A Village At ...

I am Ken Abroad, a full-time traveler traveling southeast Asia, currently living in Thailand, making Thailand travel vlogs. It is my goal here on this channel to visit every country in southeast Asia and bring you along the journey.
You won’t see much tourist places in my videos, I rather like to show the “real” sides of each country in my videos. Where do the local people go to eat? Where do they hang out? How do the locals travel through the country? Stuff like that.
There will be almost daily uploads on this channel, during the next months from Bangkok and Thailand. I will be traveling Thailand, showing you around local places in Bangkok or try lots of different Thai food. Join the journey if you are interested in experiencing Bangkok now and Thailand 2021 from a more authentic local point of view.

Come to think of it... I passed through Danok 3-4 years ago. We actually wanted to explore the area north of Kelantan but the driver we were recommended came from Satun so we had to drive the long way around. When we crossed the border I thought the town was called "Sadao", but that's actually the name of the border crossing. Very interesting experience - we had to get in the rented van at the "Duty Free" place a little ways inside Malaysia, and he let us out to cross the border on foot. Looking at Google Maps - there's a "Dinosaur Park" in Danok! Only half a kilometer west of the main road.

Wow, another adventurous vlog at Danok town between the border of Thailand and Malaysia. Great of you, Ken to explore, show and share it with us. Thank you very much. I have been there twice and it was very crowded, full of Malaysian tourists. So sad to see it's quite empty now. Guess those holes along the fence were for smuggling purposes, either goods or illegal immigrants.

7:35 More people from Thailand cross over to Malaysia because most daily essentials such cooking gas, diesel, petrol, cooking oil, to name a few, are cheaper in Malaysia. But fruits and "night entertainment" are definitely more and cheaper in Thailand.

A lot of the high security at the border has to do with human trafficking. A lot of the illegal immigrants (mainly from Myanmar and Bangladesh) come in through the Malaysia-Thai border, though not near major towns or official crossings like Danok or Padang Besar. There are a lot of undocumented foreign workers (mainly from Myanmar) in Thailand, as well.

The lady vendors at the street markets are very friendly. Those round small veggies are eggplants/round brinjals. Then, the brownish ones are bamboo shoots. @@KenAbroad People cook them in a variety of ways. Mamak restaurants (especially Nasi Kandar ones) slice them thin and deep-fry them. You can also stuff them with fish paste and steam them, or cut them up and use them in a soup. I suppose you COULD eat them raw, I don't recall ever having done so. You should see if you can find them in local Thai dishes. Also the bamboo shoots.

If you're looking for another border town to visit in the South - try Satun. I've never been there, but I've come across two people who came from there or have family from there. It's on the coast, so there are probably beaches. There's no actual land border, but it's very close to Langkawi. There are a few islands offshore, too, and I'm pretty sure it's off the usual tourist path. I don't think many Malaysian tourists go there either.

Hi Ken, just love to watch country borders. I am always curious about the Isthmus of Kra the narrow neck of southern Myanmar n Thailand connecting peninsula Malaysia to mainland China. I think you should stop by at Ranong situated at the narrowest part of the Kra isthmus at Kra Buri to be exact 58 km north of Ranong. News have been circulating that it is going to be carved to connect the Andaman Sea n the Gulf of Thailand thus making Malaysia an island! Interesting right?

I think if I went there and spoke to them in Thai, they'd allow me to look around. However, obviously not beyond the gate, 30m or so beyond where you were standing. During normal times, cars and buses (as opposed to trucks) turn left, to a new immigration and customs complex. Only trucks go straight ahead. I've driven through this border crossing as far south as Kuala Lumpur back in 2017. Definitely miss those times. The border will probably open up again in 2022, but not before then. Even if Thailand goes ahead with the "sandbox" plan this year, it will be limited to entry and exit by air.

Danok is a special place. It's Pre-Bangkok. Lots are looking for 'ayam'. It won't be the same at least for another 2-3 years.

During normal times, Dan Nok can be reasonably exciting but now, aside from the border crossing, the place looks boring and dead. Even so, I have never lingered in Dan Nok. Last time I came, I passed through as quickly as possible. I didn't make any stops from the time we left Phattalung until we arrived at the border. Once through with the car, we only stopped again about 100km south, at some motorway rest stop on the Malaysian Leburaya to have dinner.

Ken, do you know why 1 hour difference between Thailand and Malaysia though both on same latitude? In 31st Dec 1980 2300hrs (if I recall correctly), Msia shifted their time ahead by 1 hour. Reason was that they wanted West Msia to be same time zone as East Msia (Sabah n Sarawak) for convenient as well as commercial and economic reason. As a result for commercial viability, Spore followed Msia. Hence Spore n Msis is an hour ahead of Thailand as well as Indonesia though on same latitude. 😊😊

Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, and West Indonesia used to be in the same time zone. 1st Jan 1982, then Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir changed it to move 1 hour earlier so it is in the same time zone with East Malaysian time. Before that Malaysia had two time zones.

It's kinda weird. Time seems "normal" in the Peninsula, but in Sabah/Sarawak people go to work really really "early" (maybe 6am) and get off work by 3pm because the sun comes up really, really early and sets really, really early too.
