Make connections! I think it's with everything but working with people you can collaborate is most important. Agency and office environment can allow for mixture of creative ideas and different reviews.

I currently work for The One Club for Creativity. I would say New York is a lot safer than what people usually assume to be. As long as you avoid going out alone at night in certain areas and stuff, it would be pretty safe.
