Set on a wide plain near the foot of the Andes, Santiago boasts one of the most dazzling backdrops of any capital city on earth. Chile's capital is a dynamic, modern city where colonial mansions sit among soaring skyscrapers, folk art becomes fashion and Latin and European cultures intertwine. The city is reinventing itself, with arts, nightlife, and restaurant scenes that have never been better, making this thriving and sophisticated metropolis into the civic, cultural, and historical nucleus of the country. Enjoy it all while gazing up at the peaks of snow-dusted Andes range surrounding the city's extremities.
The views onto the towering cordillera after a rainstorm clears the air are magnificent, especially in winter, when the snow-covered peaks rise behind the city like a giant white rampart against the blue sky (though smog, unfortunately, often obscures such vistas).
Santiago is divided into 32 autonomous comunas, most of them squat, flat suburbs stretching out from the centre. The historic centre, in contrast, is compact, manageable, and has a pleasant atmosphere. Part of the appeal comes from the fact that it’s so green: tall, luxuriant trees fill the main square, and there are numerous meticulously landscaped parks.
You can get round many of Santiago’s attractions on foot in two to three days. A tour of the compact core, centered on the bustling Plaza de Armas, should include visits to the Palacio de la Moneda, the excellent Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino and the evocative Museo Colonial, followed by a climb up Cerro Santa Lucía. .
North of downtown, on the other side of the Río Mapocho, it’s an easy funicular ride up Cerro San Cristóbal, whose summit provides unrivalled views. At its foot, Barrio Bellavista is replete with cafés, restaurants, bars and clubs, plus the former home of poet Pablo Neruda, now a wonderful museum.

The drive from the airport to the city is very depressing, I remember thinking what the hell am I doing here! - lol. Once into near the centre and barrio Providencia the whole place changed! Loved my stay in Santiago, not the most beautiful city but has a great vibe and feels very safe. Some very good restaurants and interesting buildings, parks etc. Will certainly go back one day.

@acammtt yup there's people living in the street right beside the highway from the airport to the downtown area. It's the only place where i've seen them anyways, they have been there for decades

I went during on a sunday, so it was definitely quieter on the streets. I didn't have a lot of time in the city as I spent most of it traveling at Easter Island

I was not running on top of the sacred platform behind the moai. If you've been there, you'll know there is actually a small hill behind the moai that you can't see from this camera angle, which makes it look like I was running on the platform.

About half a dozen times, as it is an optional stopover between Chile and NZ and each time I've stayed just under a week and like feels I'm seeing it for the first time, so yes, I've walked around them but never ever THAT close. Would you walk on graves or headstones of someone that means something to you, regardless of old they are? Well, that hill is also part of the tomb of their ancestors. I'm not a 'pascuence' myself but as you probably noticed, I 'slightly' love that island. But really, they always say not to get close, although, I think they should put a sign or something to stop foreigners do whatever they want while they are there... but, because the islanders themselves are all such good people, they think tourists are as good and that they will also do the right thing (as they would do in any other country, right?)... but those rocks are erosive so if people do as they please, the moais won't always be there. A European tourist broke the nose of one of them (he probably didn't have much between his ears and didn't find anything better than to test his head against it or something). As expected, he was taken to court and I don't know whether he spent time in jail or not (I hope he did) but, for starters, he had to pay a very costly fine and, for sure, got banned from the island for the rest of his life... and... if his CI is higher than that of a toaster, he will never ever mess up with anything that has a massive historical value again, know what I mean? Have a great time on your next holidays!

You can watch my Easter Island Video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e9mllq2l0sevm2g.htmlm30s. I was with my local guide who's ancestory originated from the island. I'm very certain she would have told me if it's a no-no. I respect the culture and history as you would, hence why I went there. Just fyi.
