Santiago is modern and westernized. The city has sleek, glass skyscrapers and South America's largest shopping mall. Warm, dry summers, mountains on the horizon, and persistent smog reminded me a lot of Los Angeles. My trip ended with a three-day hospitalization 🤒

I am from Spain but many years ago I worked intermittently for several months in Chile. I also worked in other many South American countries. Chile is the safest and developed (well, I haven't been to Uruguay yet, which is said to be very safe too). Buenos Aires felt more European on the surface because had a wealthy past and many of those buildings built then are still there, but the economy is in shambles today and it is much more dangerous. Chile has very low levels of corruption a stark difference with the rest of countries in the area. People in Chile are really welcoming, the food is just incredible (they have also excellent fish!) and I had also the chance to visit Puerto Montt, Torres del Payne, Puerto Natal, Iquique, Viña del mar, Reñaca, Valparaíso, Isla de Pascua, the mountains in Santiago de Chile, etc. I loved visiting Pablo Neruda's houses (La Chascona in Santiago and the one in Isla Negra on the coast). I see that Santiago is still very polluted, that is because it is surrounded by very high mountains and has little rain. I enjoyed Chile a lot, great people, amazing diversity and landscapes. It is my favorite country in Hispanic America. Well, speaking Spanish helped too. Visiting Chile is a must.

Proof of the free market works. All of South America can be rich. Spanish people enslave themselves with the state. They choose slave masters and birth their children into serfdom. Instead of being the free market.

The salmonella was because of the sushi or beef tartar, which I would never recommend to a foreigner or Chilean who is not used to it or if the place does not have a high standard.

In my 40 year old chilean life I’ve never, ever known someone who has got salmonella 😅. I would recommend buying raw dishes like Crudo, Tártaro or Ceviche on fancy restaurants only or raw sea food anywhere in the coast. Nice vid, go to Viña first next time 😉

Hey Kevin, enjoyed your video. I was born in Chile on May 22 1960, earthquake 9.5 magnitude. Biggest in world history. The doctors delivered me in between the major shaking. Anyway I was 7 years old when I left. Went back to visit at age 36 I am now 63 years old. I am sorry you got sick for the fish, the food the fruits are so darn delicious and not so processed and tasteless as here in the USA. Never the less one can get sick anywhere in the world. I toured as a guitarist also and one thing I learned during traveling is stay away from salads and foods that are washed with local water. Never drink tap water. Understand from the locals what is good and what is risky. We learn by doing. However the health care you got is also top notch for the most part in Chile. And yes much crime, muggings etc. Especially in the bigger cities. I am lucky for when I visited my extended family put out the red carpet. We went to Santiago, Chiloe, Punta Arenas, back up to Vina del Mar and Valparaiso. I ate Curanto and Empanadas and all the dishes my mom and grandma use to make when I was growing up. Anyway very good video and Kevin - stay safe. When you go out drinking make sure there are people you know keeping an eye on you and keeping you safe that are sober. Tourists are targets everywhere you go. Dont dress so luxirous, dont wear expensive watches when touring, dont flash your money around, Be smart - I know you guys are. Travelling and getting familiar with other cultures going beyond borders will make you a better human. keep up the good work.

We are not Europe or Japan (and I don't think we have to be like them either. Each country is unique in every way) but you can enjoy a good quality of life here if you really want and work hard. As far as I know, that happens in every city and country in the world. Btw, come to the south of Chile the next time! 😊

First of all, I'm quite surprised this video has so few views, production quality and narrative is top notch! Really enjoyed the virtual trip, but as a Santiaguino I feel so many things got cut/omitted in the video haha... Until next time, maybe 😀 Re: salmonella, I have a theory. As unlikely as it may sound, you're accustomed to US raw meat "traits" and another country's raw meat was too much for you. The only support for my theory, is that in my lifetime I've never and I mean EVER heard of a Chilean getting salmonella! It's one of those diseases we left behind in the 80's, and if there is still a weak/uncommon variety around, our stomachs don't even flinch anymore 😅
@KevinAcrossAmerica

I really appreciate that, Victor. The KZfaq algorhythm is quite a mystery. Some videos take off while others just don't. It's very strange. As for the salmonella, I think you're spot on. I ate the exact same food as my girlfriend and she didn't have so much as an upset stomach. U.S. citizens have plastic stomachs 😂 The hospitalization prevented me from going to Viña del Mar, Templo Bahá'í, and Valparaíso. Chile 2.0 video!

I am headed to Santiago for about one week in late January 2024 so am looking on you tube for info when I caught this video. After watching this video I had to write to express how impressed I was by the distinctive quality of the documentary---so impressive compared to the vast majority of "you tuber travel videos. Let me explain, and it's a lesson to other you tubers: Notice how Kevin makes sure that although he and his girlfriend are in the videos, his perspective is OUTWARD, not self-directed. Yes, we see him as narrator, but the focus is on providing us, the viewer, with Santiago itself, the city. This reference point shows respect for the subject (the city of Santiago in this case). So many you tubers make their videos about THEM, NOT the subject city, people, animals, etc. In Kevin's case, he provides detailed but highly interesting (newsworthy) information. His narration style, of course, reflects his experience of 15 years (according to his bio) as a TV news-reporter. His style is very serious, formal, but so impressively professional. I pay attention to videos in a way different than others because I want to shoot some documentaries myself in the future. I've subscribed. (and yes, in addition, his tip about not eating raw food is a huge favor to any traveler :).

I spent a lotta time there, but it was the late 1960’s. I do miss it and glad to see your video which really brought me up to date. Can’t believe how much the Plaza de Armas has changed. And the tower and other high rises. They have a really neat Metro system too. I generally had no problem with the food. All mine was cooked. Don’t remember eating ceviche tho. Love to go back someday soon. Pisco probably has enough alcohol to kill off those nasty germs. Probably the greens and raw meats and fish also if ceviche, the fish is “cooked” in lime juice, which might have made it OK.

@diegocaru
@diegocaru Жыл бұрын
@@KevinAcrossAmerica I'm actually from Valparaíso, the city is fairly small, as most of the people live in the hills, still, there's a lot to visit here, from the port, to museums, miradores (viewpoints) and of course, the local food. Some of the hills are really neat to visit, as their elevators, but you should ask the locals first, because some hills can be kinda dangerous at late hours. Viña is beautiful too, you can visit the beaches, plazas, the casino or just take a stroll through the city and see where it takes you. As for transportation, in Valparaíso you can take a trolley, which are electrical buses connected to the city wires, or you can use the metro which connects Viña and Valparaíso. I haven't been in Patagonia, but there are many beautiful places in the south of Chile as well, from Salto del Laja, Torres del Paine, Lago Villarrica, Chiloe's Archipelago, and many more. The north has the desert, and places like San Pedro de Atacama which are very popular for tourists. Oh, and the nickname Santiasco comes because of the air pollution and the general bad quality of life for its habitants, as its awful climate (too hot in summer and too cold in winter), where as most of other cities have a much more confortable temperature through the year. Of course, the south is colder and the north is hotter in general, and the closest to the shore, the more temperated it is.
