Sailing Project Atticus

Sailing Project Atticus

6 жыл бұрын

Isla Mujeres continued to be a perfect place to find work. Desiree found a side-job doing social media photography for a wedding planning company, scored big time on a cruising sailboat whose owner wanted newly-upholstered cushions, and Jordan honed in on his rudder building skills! We also experimented with doing odd jobs for other cruisers like trouble shooting wifi.
After working hard in Isla Mujeres, it was time to get Atticus back out on the water for an adventure! We decided to sail south to Bahia de Ascensión with our neighbors. Check out our process of turning Atticus back into a cruising sailboat!

Keep learning skills and ask Jordan to pick up some refrigeration tools, gauges and such. You can make a lot of money fixing boaters ac and refrigeration, most of the freon is either 134 a or r22 for ac. I got gauges and scales and leak finder from harbor freight.

Good work on the cushions! First Mate here has just finished her third cushion. The first was a bit off and needs to be resewn, but the second and third are really good! Have you found that you really need to buy your supplies from Sailrite? We've bought from other places and found the quality to be off.

Tell Anne Good luck and have fun!!

Hey thanks guys! We both learned while refitting Atticus- a little bit from reading books, a little bit from articles and online forums, a little bit from boatyard friends, a little bit of trial and error, and then later we got better at finding "experts" and asking them MANY questions, haha! Check out most of our refit (lessons AND failures) here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bLKqiJN-yKnSZIU.html

Jordon, have you considered calling Desiree something other than "Bud" ? Like maybe, Princess, Sweetheart, Honey, Babe or something a women would appreciate you calling her? I have watched all 8 seasons of your videos and I feel like you are talking to a drinking buddy at a local bar. LMAO. Just wanted to give you some food for thought. Do you bring fiberglass, material for sewing and so on with you, or do you buy it where you need it/coustomer needs to supply it for you?
@ProjectAtticus
@ProjectAtticus 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Christain! Great question! Jordan is typically able to source his materials in Cancun (and he charges a purchasing fee to cover transportation costs and his time) like fiberglass and resin, for example. If it's a specialty material, or marine grade, we can find it in Cancun, but there is usually an upcharge on it, so we're just upfront about that. We also know when people are going and coming from the states (small community here), so sometimes we ask friends to bring supplies with them. As for fabric, I have a bunch of extra sunbrella, zippers, fasteners, etc. Whatever I don't have, I either source the materials in Cancun or wait to hear about someone flying in from the States to order. For these cushions, I gave the owners the supply list and told them if they fly in the materials it would save them by x%, and so they decided to bring in the materials themselves.

Hello jordan..i just wondering..may i know your fee for one hour ? Is fixed fee or it depends on what kind of job your doing ? Example : that rotor. And how about the materials ? Is it come from you or say consumer prepare it for you ? Thx for answer. Love from Indonesia sea. Because at here lots of marine job available.

Steve Holett, Meh... I guess I try to be a little less judgmental... I personally don't care for skinny jeans or man buns, but have no idea why they shouldn't be worn near a locker room or a sail boat.? If they like it, wear it... I don't have to like it, and I was also raised to keep my mouth shut if I didn't have something nice to say. There's no need to put someone down for the type of fashion they are drawn to. Fashion changes. People too, need to change or they'll get left behind.

Steve Holett, blaming the fact that someone takes offence at an offensive comment on "snowflake society" is such a copout. I'm sure you don't know these two personally. Would you walk up to a stranger at a party or in a restaurant and tell them you don't like their hair? I highly doubt it. Would you walk up to someone you don't know and insult their skinny jeans or man bun? Again, I doubt it. I'm sure you weren't TRYING to be offensive... You probably WERE joking. That doesn't change the fact that your joke came at the expense of making a negative comment about a strangers physical appearance. I'm not mad or upset about you being offensive. I just wanted to add that I like his hair. Then you doubled down and said skinny jeans and man buns aren't acceptable in locker rooms and sail boats. Stick to your day job because comedy is not your forte.

Sadly the sailing world is full of wealthy owners with no desire to actually sail. For people like myself ferrying their playthings has been a good source of income. If you can deal with the stresses involved with everything from mountainous seas, pirates and overzealous coast guard it is actually an easy way to make money. Have you considered or have you moved any sailboats for people? I think both of you would fill the role perfectly.

Hey S/V Tattoo! That's a great idea- we haven't done any deliveries yet, but we've heard that it's a good way to make money! We have some friends who have fallen into it and are now delivering a boat from Fiji to Belize! Something we'll definitely consider if the opportunity arises! Thanks for the tip! Do you get most of your delivery jobs by word of mouth or do you use a website? -Desiree

I started delivering sailboats for two builders in my homeland of the Netherlands back in the mid 80's where my father was the lead fiberglass technician. I have since become semi-retired due to an injury and relocated to the southern Philippines. I still ferry a few sailboats a year to supplement my pension income and get all jobs through word of mouth or from my previous employers.
