Excellent message, Robin! Very interesting if hectic day. Lovely moggies - I had a Maine Coon Cat who used to like her tap water & knew how to open the window latch to get into the garden. I hope your talent will inspire others to consider a career in construction. Yes, your beverage nook was/is very posh! People are fortunate to have you in charge of their build - I guess Tasmania is a bit of a stretch?!! Keep safe & thanks for doing what you do so wonderfully!

Bricklayer here. To all the young tradesmen up and down the country out there who've come out of their time... Get yourselves down to London for a few years. Doesn't matter what trade you do, you will learn so much more in the capital and earn well. Been here five years now after seven years of house bashing in West Sussex and the variety of work in comparison is phenomenal.

It's one of those jobs most people assume they can do themselves. Cutting things and fitting them in place.. When they decide they can't be arsed to do themselves, they'll call a carpenter. But demand absolute perfection at rock bottom prices. . After all .. All we do is cut a few bits if wood and tack it together.. How hard xould it be?

ExCeL - welcome to my home and work area from 1989 to 2019. LDDC was desperate to shift development land in recession so dropped plans for a big sports stadium for a feeble idea. As chair of local community forum, I did a bit of research on exhibition centres in Europe and suggested they could be more ambitious - included economic arguments. They agreed! (we'd built up a track record of constructive criticism so they always listened to us). Ended up with the current centre plus all the job creating hotels and associated eateries, florists, etc that I'd predicted. Hope you saw the Dockers Statue at the west end - project overseen by Royal Docks Trust (London) which we set up to continue voluntary sector funding after LDDC shut down. Met up with some old friends in Beckton last night and walked back to B1k and ExCeL to take Crossrail back to Woolwich. Good times and wonderful people. DLR extension to Beckton stop at Canning Town was also a community campaign win against local council and existing LDDC assumptions about Alf Garnett's stomping ground (Heseltine was unusual politician who sometimes listened to local people). Many £billions made by many people on the back of that community 'win' as I tease the chap who led it

You're an inspiration Robin mate. As I said before, you really do inspire (at least myself) to achieve, and it's by watching things like this that really gears me up to strive to reach that place where I want to be. Yes, it's been hard, and yes I'm super proud of what I've achieved to date, but through your inspirational videos, I fall deeper and deeper in love with what I do, and it only makes me want more. Some things you say, little nuggets of inspiration I get from watching and listening to you, really stick with me. (I'm referring back slightly to those "podcasts" you and Roger did a while ago), and even still, some of the things that you say are just gold. Ie; you never know who you'll meet...etc... that's inspiring to me. As I say, I've had it rough, starting from the absolute bottom, but again, things I get from your videos, and what comes out of that noggin of yours has, and still is helping greatly. Daily. So , honestly, cheers man.

Straight from the get go this reminded me of my little business which I must admit I loved. But people do not realise what you do before they even get up. I loved going to the merchants and once they know you life is made easier. You dropped on a very important subject sundries screw blades and the list goes on and yes I fell foul of this not pricing them into the job. But hang on you learn and if you do lose you don't do it twice. Business is hard customers are fickle they can't do the job themselves but expect so much. What a learning curve and i could go on. great video thanks.

There ya go cobba... job done. Didn't look that painful, and also looked like you enjoyed it which is a must in whatever you do in life. I watched the decline of the apprenticeship schemes from the early 80's onwards, from 4 years to 3 years to 6 months, now its pretty much on the job training... such an outright shame. It's video's like this, from certified accredited tradesmen, that is the only thing that provides any realistic guidance on day-to day business and what's involved for those starting out, to those seasoned people wishing to improve their skills and knowledge. It's no different here in Western Australia where I moved to from Wales, in fact, I found it even worse, so called apprentices having no technical guidance in construction methods and cross exposure with other trades.... you simply turn up with a gang on site and learn every short cut and bad trick in the book, and visit Tech College (TAFE in Australia) for 1 month out of a year - what the hell can you get out of 2 weeks in each 6 month semester, compared to the old British system of full time attendance for at least the first 12 months followed by at least 3 days a week for the next few years... site experience during holidays. It's a crying shame to see the old skill sets being eroded, so Goodonya Robin for persevering with the Channel and taking the time to invest your knowledge in others.
@ukconstruction
@ukconstruction Жыл бұрын
Hi Glenn, many thanks for your comment. It is such a big problem now the lack of training and the passing on of knowledge and essential skills needed and I think you are dead right in all you say about this starting from the 80's onwards, I was training from 86 to 89 and I was full time in college for a big part of that too!! Are you working in construction in Australia now? Cheers Robin

@@ukconstruction yes we were the last of the correctly indentured apprentices I believe mate. I came here on my trade ticket almost 17 years ago worked in construction, then forced into iron ore mining during the 2008 crash for regular income as a technical Officer. I am a bricklayer by trade (sorry), I wannabe chippy, but my dad enrolled me as a bricky much to my disdain 😂... I loved working in the joinery shop with the carpenters when it was raining... No going home for apprentices those days as you will remember. I have never stopped striving even at my age mate to learn skills from good people such as yourself... Wonderful 👍. I live in Margaret River, and currently putting a roof on my new house, just finished the brickwork, 30,000 of the buggers. Keep up the good work.. P.S. you have a wonderful home there...
