Hi iris! I was reading ur blog (I love it, it is very helpful and interesting) my sister is applying this year to US universities as an international student, and in one of ur blog articles about the effects of covid 19 on college admissions you mentioned that " it is very likely that colleges with early decision plans will try to recruit a higher percentage of their incoming class through early decision. This, to a certain extent, will guarantee the institution a higher yield rate.To secure students through a binding early decision program means that the university can secure more tuition-paying students, thereby increasing their revenue in a financial downturn. The early deadline may give applicants a boost even larger than it has in previous years." My question is: are her chances going to be lower than other applicants just because she needs a full financial aid package? Unlike other applicants who can pay their full tutuition.

Needing a full financial aid package won’t affect how much of an advantage early decision will give her! I’m not sure where the idea of ED and financial aid is coming from, but you can still apply to schools ED while needing full financial aid. Therefore, your chances of applying ED will still be significantly higher than applying RD. I hope that made sense but lmk if you have further clarifying questions!

Hey Iris!!!! Another great which I love! Last video you gave me a few ideas for extracurriculars for entering the medicine field, and it was soooo helpful!! Im sadly still worrying about things i could do that make an impact and give me an advantage over others in the college application process. Do you have any more ideas in mind for extracurriculars that I could do that relate to my theme? tysm for everything btw

Hey!! I think depth over breadth!! So I’d pick one idea and run with it and not worry about adding on additional extracurriculars. I think I might’ve covered these in my last response but the best ECs for your interests would be world-class biochem related research, a book, an org, or an event of some sort related to medicine. Hi Iris! Would it be ok to do an extracurricular activity related to an experience that you have. for example writing a book about a situation about a thing in your life but then not really studying or using that in college? Thank you.

You can start a business, an organization of some sort (even nonprofits are good practice for going into business), write a book about business, start FBLA/another business club, etc.

Okay, please address this in your Q/A or something. I understand your themes were cross cultural understanding and female empowerment. Can there be more than 2 themes tho? Will the application still seem cohesive? And how do I find my spike from my themes?

Yeah so my theme was at the highest level “bridging divides”, and that played out with cultures and genders. I did a TON of brainstorming to come to that theme, because I did so many different extracurriculars. I’d recommend analyzing your activities almost like you’re reading a book. What’s the theme at the highest level? Identifying that then conveying it through your essays would help AOs understand you as a cohesive applicant.
