I am from Thailand. This is very eye-opening for me. I dug deep into detail of Tai people in Vietnam. It turns out that the most interesting thing is that the Thai-Viet script is 70-80% similar to Thai script. Thanks for a very interesting video.

"Bach Viet" is a term that refers to the Vietnamese people or the Vietnamese nation. The term "Bach Viet" (百越) is composed of two Chinese characters: "百" means "hundred" and "越" refers to the Yue people, an ancient ethnic group in southern China. The term "Bach Viet" historically referred to the various ethnic groups inhabiting the region that is now northern Vietnam.

Bai Yue/Bach viet tribes .Ethnic groups who inhabited the regions of Southern China.InThe local minority speaks a Thai language related to northern Thai, a language spoken in Chiang Mai! When I tried to speak with a lady at a ‘Thai’ restaurant south of the Mekong river, I realised they use words in common with central Thai like ‘mai’ (wood), ‘nam’ (liquid) and ‘phak’ (vegetable), but their words for greetings were totally different from central Thai (‘sawasdee krap’), and so was the their word for rice (‘kao’ in central Thai). The touristic concrete architecture is Thai-inspired, but there are old houses with Thai style too, and there are buddhist monks. If the current hypotheses are true, the Thai population of Thailand emanate from the Shan states in Burma which emanate from southern Yunnan.

@@WhatThePho Just to let you and your friend know. Cooking over an open fire can be bad for you health and lungs as the smoke gets in your lungs. It's better if she cooks on a wood fire stove. She should look up rocket stoves as they are very fuel efficient, using less wood than other stove designs.

Excellent video Van! I have been fascinated by the different ethnic minorities in my cycling & motorbiking throughout Central & North Vietnam. I was drawn to the stunning appearance of the Thai women in particular, the tall Black Thai, long hair tied up & beautiful outfits. And traditional bamboo dancing. I would like to see you do more videos of aspects of diverse ethnic village life.

Well, you made a very good video: you were not constantly in the picture and no terrible and disturbing noise (fill-up music) in the background. In short a pleasant video, nice pace and good information and not too much. Because these kinds of videos are very important, there is a point for improvement: most foreigners are not yet very familiar with the geography of Vietnam, nor where the Thay live and how to get there. Briefly show a map of Vietnam at the beginning showing where you are (and possibly at the end how to get there) and your video is perfect.
