While still at quarters of New Haven Fire Department Engine 4, Truck 1, Car 32, and SOC 1 at 952 Grand Avenue, we take a ride with Engine 4 for the afternoon and take in a few runs along the way. The first run came in while the engine was out of quarters and picking up the meal for the firehouse at Stop and Shop at 150 Whalley Avenue. It was an EMS call for someone with difficulty breathing on Chapel Street by the New Haven Green. The engine got cancelled before reaching the location; there was a festival going on in the Green, and there was a roving EMS unit that was able to tend to the person. AMR also showed up to tend to them. The second run was also an EMS call at the Green. A similar outcome occurred with this run, wherein the roving EMS unit was able to tend to them before we got there, so we were cancelled once more. The third run was just down the street to 850 Grand Avenue to an apartment complex, where an automatic alarm was going off. Apparently, the handicap pull string in the bathroom of an apartment got activated, causing the alarm. After getting into the apartment, the alarm was silenced and reset. Truck 1 and Car 33 also responded to this call. The fourth run was to the Elm Street side of the Green for clean-up of bodily fluids. There was some blood on the sidewalk that was called in, so the engine brought out some cleaning products and washed down the blood from the sidewalk. While we were at the Green, our fifth run came in. This one was for a brush fire on Long Wharf Drive, which was caused by someone who was setting off fireworks. Upon arrival on Long Wharf, the engine came upon a couple of small smoldering piles of firework remains. One of the firefighters used a water can and extinguished the piles. After that, it was back to quarters for chow. Engine 4 is a 2021 Seagrave Marauder. Enjoy the view of the ride on the runs, as well as the sounds of the Q2B siren as we respond to each call.
