5 жыл бұрынIn February of 2017, Senior Video Correspondent Graham Flanagan spent a day behind the scenes of “Jeopardy!” at Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles.
On March 6, 2019, Alex Trebek, the 78-year-old host of “Jeopardy!,” announced that he has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. In a video message posted to the long-running game show’s KZfaq channel, Trebek delivered the news with transparency, humor, and optimism.
“I plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease,” Trebek said in the video message. “Truth told, I have to! Because under the terms of my contract, I have to host “Jeopardy!” for three more years!”
In addition to being present for the five episodes that were taped that day, Flanagan got to spend a limited amount of one-on-one time with Trebek, who has been hosting the show since 1984.
He got an inside look at Trebek’s pre-show routine, and got the iconic host to open up about his diet, his passion for labor-intensive housework, and the reason he’s never lost his passion for hosting “Jeopardy!” after more than 7,000 episodes.
Flanagan also recorded Trebek’s interactions with the live studio audience during commercial breaks, wherein he takes unscripted questions. “No subject is taboo,” Trebek said.
This visit to the “Jeopardy!” set came the day after a category that featured Trebek reciting rap lyrics went viral, making headlines due to his deadpan delivery of verses by artists like Drake and Lil’ Wayne.
Business Insider released a series of short videos produced from the footage captured in 2017. After Trebek’s announcement regarding his health status captured the minds and hearts of the show’s massive audience, Flanagan returned to the footage he shot that day to create a new, extended chronicle of his experience.
Some of the footage featured here was included in the previously-released videos, and some of it is being seen for the first time.

A relative of mine was on the show. He said Trebek's off camera personality was pretty much the same as what you see on the show. Very direct, no humor, and seemed somewhat of a cold fish.

Jesus Christ, this video is pure gold. No music, no fancy editing. Everything is perfect. It’s like a home VHS video but better quality. Like a grandson filming his grandad. This is the way it should be. This behind the scenes is a treasure. I am so glad this is video taped. We can remember and learn from it if Jeopardy continues in the future without Trebek. And you can tell that he is truly such an intelligent, wise person. Just listening to him go over the game for that day is so fascinating. The process and what it takes, anyone else can easily mess it up and make so many mistakes... but Trebek, Trebek is THE man for it.

I adore this. It amazes me how laid back the whole production is. The clues are printed on paper instead of being displayed on a fancy computer sponsored by some company, his makeup was quick and easy, and they have a ton of books for clue research. Alex is as much of the process of creating the show's clues as the people who write them, instead of just being the host. No one seems to be the stereotypical Hollywood juggernaut that we're used to. It's a quaint and straightforward production; there's no drama, no sponsors, and the host's personality isn't the main driver of the show. I love this show so much and I wish more television was like it. I really appreciate you guys for making this and releasing the extended version!

hetr it’s such a tightly run ship. The contestant handlers are fantastic and each episode is shot in about 40 minutes. (Compare that to the US version of The Chase. Each episode took 4 hours to shoot.) They make the entire production look easy.

The only other announcers/voiceover people I remember working past their 90's, Thurl Ravenscroft (Tony The Tiger), he died last decade and Don Pardo (bast known for being Saturday Night Live's announcer) was like 94 as well when he passed on about 5 years ago (The forensic Files guy was also 90+ I remember. Going back to Gilbert, I first remember him announcing on the game show "Chain Reaction" in 1980.

@@ryanstrnad8442 The Sony lot sits between Washington and... nuts, which other street? I think Culver, in Culver City. The address that they used to give on-air for various reasons is 10202 West Washington Blvd, Culver City CA 90232, which is also the address Google gives for the Sony studio tour. And of course, who can forget that Don Pardo was Jeopardy's original announcer? And Price is Right, back in the 50s when Bill Cullen hosted, way before the Bob Barker reboot in 1972.

The show is successful because it is objective and neutral. Encourages knowledge. Accurate. Factual. Trebek is accurate and articulate.

For sure. I watched videos on the CNN and Fox News KZfaq channels after the cancer announcement and they were both very positive and supportive. That's incredibly rare today.

I can’t believe when someone asked if he had any plans to retire soon he was like no do you know something I don’t and then in November he actually retired since the pancreatic cancer got worse on him. I remember when I went to my first taping of Jeopardy and when they went to commercial break Trebek just came up to the audience and started making random witty jokes/remarks. It was amazing, giving him all my support as he destroys cancer!

Some said Alex seemed grumpy. He's not grumpy. He's actually just being himself, not turned up to level 10 for a TV camera, he's also focused on his real work. The work that happens off camera so he can be GREAT on camera. I have the utmost respect for this man and I wish him NOTHING but the best in his fight against Cancer.

I didn't see him as grumpy either, just a regular guy at 8:00 in the morning. Most people only see the "Alex Trebek" character. (Howard Stern said people are shocked that he is not his radio character in real life.)

@@buckosoft I think the beginning was shot even earlier than that. He says he gets to the office at 6 and they go into a meeting at 7:30. The beginning would be filmed some time around 6 AM. Of course he's gonna have a "grumpy" morning voice!

I was sadder about Alex Trebek's death than I was saddened about the death of any other person that I have never met before and even some that I knew. He was like a close family member and I know that many people share my sadness because they think of him in the same way. In this world of negative people and their negative influences, he was a consistent, calm, positive presence, and for that there are few people more worthy of our affection. There will never be a person that can fill his shoes completely. RIP Alex, you made a positive impact on my life.

What a good sport, a "gamer" and a guy who's down for fun. Many men his age would get all grumpy and scrunch their face up if asked to recite rap lyrics. Mr. Trebek does it with enthusiasm and vigor. I love the dynamic here. Sort-of-nervous, excited young reporter and calm, jaded old staff. It feels so real, like how else do you take a camera into an environment like this and ask questions? Nervously, afraid to intrude, it feels so familiar and homey. I'm sure that sweet office of people was rocked by Alex's death, as was the world. But I hope they get to go on and make things feel normal again

I will watch this again and again. Any person that loved his job like Alex Trebek should be able to live forever. He was so down-to-earth. You can tell he was extremely serious about the quality of the show and it was demonstrated with every taping. That is what made Jeopardy the favorite game show of all time. I had no idea of his love for remodeling. Wish he could have been my neighbor, would have loved his conversations and dry sense of humor. Alex, if anyone can ever fill your shoes, I will be amazed. Thank you for this special look behind the scenes. I was looking forward to attending a taping of a show earlier this year and had tickets for April--before it got shut down by COVID. This about makes up for it. RIP Alex.

This was absolutely amazing to watch!! I've always wanted a inside look into what Alex reads behind the podium and how it's put together, his process for preparing for a show and his personality behind the scenes. I remember when he read those raps on TV, they were developed into memes before the next morning lol and to close this behind the scenes episode with more raps from the Migos, DJ Khaled and The King & Queen of Music (Jay Z and Beyonce) with such flow,.....OMG, *****APPLAUSE***** ALEX TREBEK YOU'RE THE GREATEST!!! #LongLiveAlexTrebek #LongLiveJeopardy

I put Alex in the same category as Mr. Rogers. Wholesome hosts. They both truly cared about their viewers and wanted to expand the world of knowledge to young and old alike. Miss them both. RIP to the best hosts ever to grace the television screen.

It's a very nice touch having a picture of Art Fleming behind him! I used to watch him on CBC in Toronto. He hosted a game show called " Reach for the To". Kind of a GE College Bowl for high school kids. Prayers for his health.

This is fascinating. Alex is looking fabulous. Interesting to hear he is helping his daughter renovate. Multi- skilled, handsome, so intelligent, and a nice guy. He oversees what a makes a fantastic show. Like the audience questions and he answering. RIP Alex. You are missed and remembered. Much loved.

Been watching Jeopardy since the Art Fleming days that was on around noon time. Love Alex, and I pray he beats this terrible cancer. We need men like him in our homes, clean, honest and real.

😍I love him. He is such a good looking man. I’m glad he addressed the hair in his conversion with Jane Pauley because I really couldn’t tell if it was or wasn’t his own hair. I hope he’ll be okay. He is a treasure. 🤗💞🤗
