what would be the odds that a murderer willing to kill somebody to avoid paying cab fare, in NY, would own a car, and be upstanding enough to have proper insurance on it, and still took a cab?

I'm just shocked that his insurance even bothered to help him track down the insurance info of the taxi driver since he only had liability. When I had liability on my first car I got into an accident where the person gave me fake insurance info but I took a picture of their plate. I didn't file a police report because I didn't know any better. Anyway, I called my insurance to see if they could help me in any way to get my car fixed and they basically said that since I only have liability that they're not obligated to help. I asked if they could give me the name of the registered owner at least so I could take them to small claims court, they said it'd take a month to do that. So I just went down to the police station, told them what happened and gave them the plate number and they wrote it down for me on the spot.

I wonder if the driver operating an illegal cab would have made any difference in the liability? I also wonder in which states the driver/insurance would have been liable?

@@TheCobruhAlienat0r even though here in nyc its a no fault state if you can prove it was not your fault do to dash cam or from police report the at fault party insurance should pay for the damage. Always call the police asap when in a car accident no matter how minor it is unless no damage occured.

I am with state farm, my grandpa is with state farm and has been all his life since 16 never had issues they paid out on everything. I made a profit on all the incidents and they lost money. Cousin had like Progressive or some shit like that bought a brand new mustang in los angeles, drove it home to san jose, went to bakersfield and was chilling with his girlfriend who was driving her own car and he was on this mountain pass road, came around a corner rolled it over the edge of a cliff and rolled down it walked away totalled the car, car was worth more where he lived so the insurance company paid out more than he paid to buy the car, he walked away with $10-15k profit on the car they banned him but he took them to the cleaners on the deal cause of how the policy and law worked lol.

I grew up in that area, I get the humor about the dead guy driving into your car. I recognized the road alongside the fenced-in, sunken hellhole known as the Prospect Expressway. Parade Pl. clinched it, the NYPD BSTF station house is at the other end of the Parade Grounds at Park Circle. I was actually born at Caledonian Hospital, it was probably a block or two from where you lived, but I think it was bought out, or closed down.... Sorry for waxing nostalgic, but great story!

I was 18, parked in a marked car space on the side of a residential road directly under a street light, coming back from a long trip, i was about 15 min from home but i couldnt keep my eyes open any longer, so did the responsible thing and found a safe place to park and take a nap... 30 min later BOOOOM wake up to the little cubes of glass from the back window, giant pile of cds from the console and shit flying at me get pushed about 8mtr down the road and up onto the kerb 45° to the roadway, i look around to see what happened, big traytruck had slammed into me, then proceeded to drive on like nothing happened, i looked in the mirror and saw the rear hatch was now where the rear seat should be and the rear door was bowed out like a foot in the middle, thought, cant give chase, i heard a tyre burst when going up the kerb too. So i screamed in anger, but being just awoken, it came out a ridiculous noise instead. Got out and looked at my car, was shattered, loved that car and it was completely destroyed. So i called the cops, told them id been hit n run by a tray truck with wood on just then, that i was ok and my car was destroyed, they said they would come and send someone to look for the damaged truck.. All the people in houses nearby came out to see what happened, i sat there for 5 hours waiting for the cops, then finally a police car shows up, i speak to them, the woman goes "we arent here for that, just passing through... You better move that thing and clean the glass up hey" then drove off... Never heard a damn thing about it. Kicker is, id applied for a loan to get it resprayed, but it was taking ages to come through, the morning after the car was ran into, the funds were in my account.... So instead of respraying my first love, i fixed up my "beater car" to be road legal again so i had A car. While looking for another 1985 mitsubishi colt the same colour, couldnt find one anywhere over the course of a year. So i used the loan money to manual swap the 1982 subaru leone hardtop coupe, (bought a donor car) made a cool exhaust, got a nardi steering wheel, put a "big stereo" in it. And i still have that car now 15 years later

"New York has a way of saying goodbye." No kidding. I went to school in Brooklyn. The *day before* graduation, I had been staying just outside the city with my family who were going to take Metro North down on the day of graduation. I had a girlfriend in the city, so I took the train down that night to stay at her place. I was getting a ticket at the station from an automated machine and just then the train started to pull into the station, so I turned to run to the platform... And ran straight into a support pillar that was directly behind me, smashing my face into it. Now, just like a month or so earlier I was doing some acting for a friend's film project, and also managed to run into a wall, and also managed to hit my face, coincidentally in the same spot on the same eyebrow. So when I did it at the train station, it immediately burst open again, but of course I have to make it to the train so I stumble down to the platform with my face just covered in blood. Which is what it still looked like when I got on the train and when the ticket inspector came by, (which didn't help because by now there was a decent amount of blood on the ticket as well,) and for some reason they didn't have, like, even napkins? Let alone a first aid kit or anything. So by the time I actually get to graduation the next day, of course I have a brand new gash, right in the middle of my face, which makes for a great graduation portrait. NYC was just like, "oh you're leaving? don't let the wall hit you on the way out," and then smacked me with a protracted one-two punch. Memories.

I actually investigated something similar. I had an older lady who passed away behind the wheel while she was driving on a 2 lane highway in Monterey. She crossed over the center line and totalled a semi delivering a load of lumber. Hit it head on. Coroner confirmed she was deceased before the crash. I ended up classifying it as a non injury - fatal collision. The strange part is another officer had a similar crash several years earlier. In that one the driver only hit a tree. It's an odd world.

It's always popcorn time when John Ficarra takes the chair at VINwiki. 👍 So many of the recent guests have turned me off to where I rarely watch this channel anymore. Especially that KZfaqr who claimed his car was seized in Detroit for no reason... 🙄 (Story's so full of holes, I can't believe Ed even let him on the channel. But I'm a local, so I'd know more about the local legal issues than Ed would.) That pretty much ruined VINwiki for me.

The most bizarre story I have ever heard, not just on VinWiki but ever. 'A corpse drove into my car, but the guy is not liable'. Funny story, yet sad this man lost his life. Crazy

Over here in Norwayland, the offending owner's insurance is liable even if the owner is dead, asleep, the car has been stolen, or it achieves sentience and just does it by itself. Even if the insurance has lapsed, the last company involved gets the bill. It's their responsibility to seek out the rightful debtor and get them to pay them back. The insurance follows the car, not the driver.
