The thing that really turns me off of fanservice is the recurring theme of “against their will”. SOOOO much fanservice in anime is women being exposed, groped, viewed, or straight up assaulted against their will, and it’s always played for lighthearted fun. Even shows where fanservice fun is the entire point focus mainly on girls being unwillingly sexualized, with male consequences (if any) portrayed as a simple punchline. Female characters who are proactively sexual seem to be rare (not nonexistent, but heavily outnumbered by sexy girls who don’t want to be sexualized).

The real takeaway from this video is the beginning of the 'Lextorias sitting on a couch' arc.

One of my favorite obscure facts about Evangelion, is that plug suits weren't originally going to be those skintight latex suits. But Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, the character designer, wanted to see the cosplays of girls in the tight suits. He mentions it in his art book, Der Mond. It just further shows how horny that team was.

Can I just say that the fanservice for male characters is totally different than the female characters that I wouldn't really call it fanservice? You'll never see a male character get accidentally "groped" and feel humiliated for it. Or male parts jiggle and a close up of their skintight bums while their faces blush? It ain't sexy, it's just a trip to the local gym lol. I want better fanservice for male characters, truly.

The problem about fanservice is that this kind of fanservice is often *for* men. So are women really being empowered? Or are men just applauding for women being naked and trying to rationalize it?

Good video! I AM a bit disappointed that you don’t get into the probably the biggest reason people hate fan service: consent and intent. Literally nobody complains about Julia or Faye from Cowboy Bebop dressing sexy. They presumably chose their own outfits and are grown ass ladies expressing their own sexuality. Even Dress Up Darling is about a girl choosing to dress sexy. But 90% of anime fan service is done in spite of the characters wishes in ways that often parallel uncomfortable ways girls/women are sexualized against their wishes in real life. I genuinely laughed at the _"... how does that even happen"_ in the list of fan service. If there is one thing we know about anime its that it will never let physics get in the way of a good bit of fan service. Be it a breeze that only affect women's clothing to a fall ending up with the male protagonist's face in a crotch regardless of starting orientation or distance.

I remember watching Kill La Kill and Ryuko being extremely embarrassed when she transformed. Throughout the show she learns to accept Senketsu and embrace her power growing as character. I don't know, seeing a lot of crazy fanservice in anime that just felt forced, it was pretty interesting to see the whole trope flipped on its head. Sits as one of my favourite shows because of it.

As someone who was shamed a lot for any display of sexuality throughout my life, Kill la Kill will always be my favorite show just for how unapologetic it is. How i felt when i saw it's nudity and sexuality shown as something cool and empowering rather than shameful, silly or degrading (those aspects reserved to poke fun at the horny audience, rather) will forever be in my heart as one of the best experiences i had woth media. I rarely reqatch things, but ive rewatched KLK three times and i will be rewatching it again. So, yeah.

You do a good job touching on a lot, the history was good to learn, and I liked the examples you used. A point I was hoping to see explored more was Fanservice as Sexual Assault. You come close to it through other points but I feel it's a big part of the discussion and issues surrounding the topic. F as SA usually comes up in darker "I'm 14 and this is deep" shows like Gantz and Mirai Nikki, but also is most of the fanservice in Berserk which is a fascinating example because it's an actually deep metanarrative comprised entirely of shallow elements. Even when F as SA serves the obvious purpose of villainizing a villain, it's often indulged to the point of gratuity and might as well have been any other crime for all the narrative weight and lasting impact it usually has. Where Berserk is able to distinguish itself is with narrative weight and acknowledging that only twisted and perverted people become monsters to begin with, which is enough to mostly validate the subtrope despite also making almost every apostle and monster a sexual organ with a face.

Ok this feels like the best place to explain the reason why I’ve always hated the “falls and accidentally gropes girl” trope, not because it’s overdone, but because that would be so painful. My first thought would not be to slap someone, but to shrivel up in pain.

The last time fanservice seriously put me off was Fire Force. I’m no prude but something about the “against her will” element really turned me off to the point of finding it unbearable. the scenes with Tamaki border on sexual harassment as she is undressed and groped; She cries and feels humiliated. it’s not like it’s fun for her… I’m not usually too bothered by fanservice but I can say this one actually kind of disturbed me

My problem with a lot of the fanservice i see is that it's basically assault treated like a joke, and when you identify with a female character to see them being treated like that and made fun of... It's not funny, it reflects how you're being viewed as a whole, and it sucks. sure it can be fun and cool, but most of the time it isn't

I think it says a lot that you have people absolutely hounding over the women in series like Attack on Titan and Chainsaw Man, despite them having comparatively little fanservice. This is of course due a lot to their tone and target demographic being different, but I think lessons can be learned from this about how fans appreciate strong and interesting characters with big tits more than just big tits.

I always enjoyed the intention of the fan service in ghost in the shell. Motoko is often seen as inhuman and then they use it to confuse the viewer by reminding then of her sexuality. She will sometimes use this to get the upperhand or to test out a character's ideology.

I think it also bears mentioning that a lot of the arguments against fan service aren’t against sexuality in media, but rather specifically, the objectification of women, and portraying sexual harassment as something that is funny or light hearted. I see a lot of people not realizing that watching someone being objectified, can make the viewer feel objectified.

honestly, fanservice to me isn’t actually that horrible of a thing if it doesn’t disrupt the plot. however, i draw the line at where most fan service lies: with teenage girls it’s straight up NOT cool to see underage girls in sexual lights, it makes me wildly uncomfortable, and the way it’s excused so often just upsets me, because this stuff just normalizes attraction to underage girls by showing it in media so often.

There's another anime I would have loved for you to touch on. The story revolves around wearing panties on your face and trying to spread awareness of sex in a world that forbids it. The entire point of the story is to show what healthy sex is. The villains are people who are doing nonconsensual sexual acts.

Also I've ran into nude calendars locally as well, some for firefighters raising money for their station and one for college girls into the outdoors raising money for... body positivity? It was entirely organized by women and was very weird to hear my friends proud of participating in it. Lots of people sexualize things, not always on purpose, for many reasons like to raise awareness or popularity and it speaks to the darker aspects of human nature that it's seen as okay at all let alone certain situations.

I think when you were contrasting Kill la Kill to Fire Force you hit the nail on the head for me for what makes me totally chill about fanservice vs not liking it. As a woman who's watched hundreds of series, I went through a phase where I didn't mind fanservice at all because I was so desencitized to it, to it being incredibly annoying, to now trying to look at it in a more balanced way. The two things that break fanservice for me is consent and tone. Fan service for comedy or in romance shows is perfect. Not when it interrupts really impactful moments. But consent is the biggest element to me now. Consent is why I loved Dress Up Darling and why characters like Yoruichi from Bleach are amazing. Consent is why I thought Food Wars was genius when I first saw it. And consent is why I don't want to put up with ecchi shows that cheaply disrespect their characters.

While i agree that kill la kill nudity is definitely better than... temaki nudity, I dont enjoy the entire ""comedy"" of haha groping and hihi girl is now ashamed because she is undressed against her will - feels too much like the guys straight up assaulting people and denying the whole thing by just saying that the people in question are just too modest. I enjoy the nudity and fanservice that makes sense between the two (or more) characters to show each other like this. People don't object to the sexualization per se. They object to the dehumanization. That's what this is really all about.

The closest parallel i can think of is how jump scares are percieved in horror media. While there is more developed opinions around jumpscares i think its due to it not being tangled up with cultural hangups. I will note that theres plenty of points where eva has had criticism over it fanservice despite most of it being plot relevant or grounded. For example in episode 23 where rei is being corrupted by the angel the fanserice there is used to show the very personal violation happening in the scene.

As a person who does not watch anime (but has many friends who do), I find these videos very informative and interesting. I never realized that their was rampant sexual "fan-service" in anime (the only "fan-service" I've ever really noticed has been in movie franchises like the MCU and Star Wars, and is not sexual in nature).

Not really. This is one of those situations where discussing something from within the fandom does a disservice to the complexities. In Japan, the concept of "service" predates anime and is everywhere throughout the culture. For example, before Cutie Honey we have idols, who are packaged and presented in a very similar way as anime. Especially in the 1970s, it was common for most female stars to present "fan service" in the form of nude or gravure photography. In the 1960s the film genre called "Pink film" started, where almost every woman had nude scenes, even if they were a major actor/protagonist. Within the world of adult entertainment, prostitution, etc, it's always been common practice to refer to these things as "service". The word is wildly used this way in Japan. "Fan service", is a slang that developed somewhat alongside anime, but denotes services which are done complimentary, or for free for the fans. And in Japanese we use this word all the time to refer to risky/suggestive things. Even 30 years ago it's normal ask a girl to give you "service" as a euphemism for perverted stuff. Explaining "fan service" in this way hyper focuses this to anime industry, when this is a wider, older and much more engrained cultural phenomenon in Japan. This is not anime, this is Japanese culture.

Maybe this is just me, but I usually dislike fan service in animes because a lot of times it’s women in embarrassing/ humiliating situations - it’s never done to make them feel cool or be in power (I’ve only seen it to be the case in rare situations). I would feel so much comfortable if they were fine with it and enjoying themselves. Many times they’re shown as innocent beings who’re not realising they’re turning the guys on by accidentally flashing them their underwears etc. Honestly, I just want the women who’re doing fan service to do it because they want to and feel like it, and I want their characters to have their own arch’s and be well developed and not there just for fan service. Erza from fairy tail was my favourite character because of this while I hated Lucy.

Personally it makes uncomfortable when they sexually humiliate the female character for fanservice. To me it's much more interesting if a character consciously uses it for their own gain. Say if that Tamaki character knew that virgin villain's weak point and showed him her body to win the fight, instead of just accidentally losing her clothes and feel ashamed and uncomfortable. And on another point if a show that shows fanservice and sexual harassment and is a satire, it doesn't take away the fact that it still showing fanservice even if it's making fun of the audience at the same time. Think that The Boys is a satire of super hero genre but a super hero movie fan still totally enjoy it... So as a girl I don't fully agree with the "female empowerment" thing tat you said. Tho I gotta agree that show's premise seems interesting, only if the fanservice was a bit less p*rny.

The tonal dissonance comes from the fact that the creators don't expect horniness to distract from the herioic fantasy of the story; they expect that it's supposed to enhance it, which is mostly only possible if you see the character more as a sex object and a trophy to be won, rather than a person who has just suffered trauma and is emotionally distraught. The problem is that you have more empathy for her than the creators expected, but that's not your mistake. 😕

i think the cyberpunk anime really emphasises the point you made at the end. it has nudity and sex, not being afraid to show the female character's tits, or the male character's bare asses, but it does so in a way that doesn't feel pandering. it just makes the show seem like it was made for adults, and made to be analysed with an adult's level of intellectualism.

I clearly did not pay very well attention when watching Kill la Kill, cause I had not caught much of that plot at all. (Albeit I watched that show when I was still in high school, so I can't really fault young me for not getting it lol.)

For me fanservice is intrusive when it becomes distracting, but it doesn't simply have to be tonally incongruent to do that. The more attention and time the direction of a scene pays to the fanservice, the more likely it is to pull me out of the show.

This dive isn't deep enough. The root/source of the term fanservice is simply "service", or サービス as a loanword. While it does retain its original meaning, it has also become slang for "a little something something" or something "on the house", i.e. extra service. Go Nagai also had a manga older than Cutie Honey AFAIK called Harenchi Gakuen that was quite erotic. Also when talking about this topic, it becomes muddied and hard to figure out which parts are genuinely intended to be erotic and which parts are "done as a service to please fans", so now the word has lost its meaning, at least in a lot of circles. Like, I wouldn't call porn, softcore or not, or any kind of work intented to be erotic as "fanservice". The easy way to tell is if a front page or afterword panel or an extra panel added to a tankoubon release is of the characters doing a beach episode. Now that would be fanservice. A, "what people outside Japan would describe as ecchi" series, would be something like Ichigo 100% or Nana to Kaoru? Those two aren't "fanservicey", they're just straight up lewd. Finally, the "... how does that even happen" scene is a well known trope in Japan called lucky sukebe ラッキースケベ.

Nice video. I know I'm coming in really late on this, but there is one thing you missed in the history of fan service section. Shower scenes. This was a staple of shonen anime in the '70s and '80s that Gainax then replaced with jiggle. The original Gundam, Zeta Gundam and the original Macross series all had them. The original Gundam even had Char in a shower scene. Well… I guess it wasn't a really important part of history, but then again, fan service usually isn't an important part of the anime either.

the best fanservice I have ever seen was probably in cyberpunk edgerunners. The naked scenes were so tastefully done. No woman/man abuse, no comedy, no punchlines. I even doubt its actually fanservice and more like mature scenes not intended for children cause they wouldnt understand the show anyways

So something to consider about Tamaki from Fire Force. I'm pretty sure shes meant to be the trope of the "Iron Butt Monkey." This is a trope that comes with a lot of pain and hijinks to the character in question while not getting much in the way to development. The best example I can think of that most people know is Daxter from Jak & Daxter.

I never watched fire force, but based on what was shown here I don't think any subversion of trope could've saved that tamaki character. her entire thing apparently is existing to be harassed "by accident" over and over again. so even in the scenes where this somehow makes her win a fight and makes her opponent look ridiculous, she's still being harassed and humiliated and dehumanised. she's the most exaggerated example of why I've been so turned off by anime for a while and still am very cautious with what I watch. they have to include a woman being harassed for laughs at least once in so many shows and it gets fucking old really quick.

Agreed 100% with everything in the video. Not to get rid of fanservice, just on how to use it well. One thing I should note though is that a ripped guy character being shirtless isn't necessarily considered fanservice to women (or bi/pan/straight women I should say). Things such as a man's voice, hands, personality, and pose and the ways those elements are used are what I would argue constitute fanservice for women, or at least to a higher regard. A good example of this would be Yang from Piofiore: Fated Memories with his voice specifically being pointed out as the reason otome players gravitate towards him (and ignore his murderous tendencies LOL). There's also the fact that a lot of the time in shonen scenes where a guy becomes shirtless, when it's not a display of power/awesomeness for the boys watching to feel powerful or to see that this guy is strong, it's typically in the context of comedy where we're meant to laugh at him or at the scene/situation as a whole, not to be excited or aroused by him.

Thanks for the vid. Communicating so clearly and coherently about this generally awkward topic helped me organize my own thoughts. Over the last 5 years or so, my interest in watching anime and reading manga has gradually diminished. I would say that a large part of it due to fanservice disrupting the flow of the story or any particular scene with a more serious tone. It's also aggravating to have a show constantly cutting away from the actual focus of dialogue or action to instead shove fanservice in one's face (ie: the "camera" shifts from the face of the person talking, to say, centering on an almost vertical top-down shot of the cleavage of a female character being spoken to). I also take issue with when a serous fight is happening only for a female character's clothing to be torn to shreds for the audience to gawk at, breaking the entire pace of the conflict. Often with "bonus points" for an slow motion panning shot of them blushing in a revealing position. Similar issue as with the Fire Force character, what is the audience supposed to feel in this moment? Upset at the character's loss of the fight, or horny over their overly sexualized state? I'd personally prefer that entertainment not include fanservice unless is specifically meant to be adult entertainment, though that may be a more extreme take. Although Food Wars and Kill La Kill aren't for me, having heard the explanations of the two anime I can see how they can find an audience to enjoy them in spite of or because of how they utilize their over-the-top fanservicing. I hope that in the future, manga and anime studios refine the "If, When, How, and Why" of the inclusion of fanservice.

I've seen people use the term "perv pandering" to specifically refer to the sexual type of fanservice. I always preferred that term. It feels more accurate because as a fan, often those sorts of scenes feel like a disservice to me.

Your explanation of how Fire Force perpetuates fanservice negativity is perfect! I'm all for fun ridiculous fanservice, sexual expression, and sex positivity but when it's literally ruining the character's legitimacy within that world it's being done wrong. The other thing that becomes problematic in a lot of anime is when women are portrayed as unintelligent, always needing to rely on the male protagonist, or just not being capable in almost any capacity.

I think a few reasons why in the west (specifically america) view typical anime fanservice in a more negative light is that 1. ppl forget they're lookin at drawins/pixels & don't separate the necessary parts from reality. 2. animation as an "art form" has the ability to showcase human expression in ways no other medium can but only Japanese animation utilizes this in a particular way no other style (especially in the west) does so it jus comes off as off-puttin to anyone outside its' intended scope. 3. Humans have a "weird" tendency to reject natural parts of ourselves as a species (many of the "7 deadly sins" R for some reason tied directly to things we need to continue existin as a species). 4. ppl don't seem to realize fanservice isn't always jus "me horny" but appreciation of the human form & while the focus tends to be on girls, boys get this plenty too. 5. Like u said america is like 30 years behind on this shit lol. 6. MOST anime that ppl criticize bout the fanservice is anime catered to the same demographic of boys 13-20 somethin which is usually the super popular ACTION/BATTLE shonen anime EVERYONE talk bout. If ppl watched other shows in the medium & broadened their horizons they'll prob see it's nowhere near the "issue" they say it is. There R SO MANY anime that don't have ANY fanservice but no-one talks bout those cus most of the ppl complainin R HYPER casuals who barely have the time cus of other things(or they jus don't care enough) to look beyond the cesspool that is Twitter for wut ppl R talkin bout these days & they're most likely ppl who got into it semi-recently via Demon Slayer ep 18 & covid so they don't even have any interest in the HUGE slew of older & less popular stuff that exists out there they might really like. So I recommend if u can't even tolerate it, watch more anime, watch older anime, & most importantly WATCH DIFFERENT ANIME. thx for comin to my extremely late tedtalk

I never watched Fire Force, but from what was described in the video that one scene got me thinking. 16:30 What if, after her clothes get burned, the male character took off his jacket to cover her? To help Tamaki gain some comfort in her state of vulnerability.

Great video my man. When I saw your poll a while back Fire Force was actually my first thought. Because personally I almost always love fan service it's fun and well hot. I think for most complaints about it people either need to just relax, attractive characters or that type of humor is fine to exist, or just accept that the show isn't for them. However that big moment with Tamaki was among the first times I ever truly disliked a fanservice scene. I thought about how it took me out of the moment. Honestly it really reminded of how Marvel movies constantly inject comedy into the wrong scenes killing tension and the mood. I think the key to fanservice in most series is to think of it as comedy. If comedy wouldn't fit in this scene why the hell would tiddies? Dragon Maid can have fanservice everywhere because the show is just for fun and lightheartedness. A serious shonen needs to be smarter where it puts fanservice just as it would with comedy. Or it needs to be a primary plot point like you mentioned with Kill la Kill, Food wars, or High school DxD one of my favorites. So yeah thank you for a more nuanced video on the topic that wasn't the usual tiddies good or tiddies bad there's no middle ground I usually see. Keep up the great work.

23:19 i watched only one Episode of Food Wars and after i watched it i immediately deleted Netflix install it back put that out of my Playlist and on the Blacklist and listened to Phonk the rest of the Day, it was just too fuckin much 💀
