It’s like a nod that the developers were thinking about the players and their role in the Sims’ world. Over time it feels like the Sims has become less interested in the input of the players, hence we have the Sims 4.

Sims 2 traits also heavily influences the compatibility between sims which is something unique. I have a sim which has a very "ugly" personality and had many fights with other sims, but managed to fall in love with another sim who tolerated him and loved him fondly, and a few friend he's not mean with. I usually let my sims do what they want, choose their partner and friends on their own, so it was nice to see him finally have a happy life after all.

A neat thing: Not only are personality points inherited from parent to child, parents can "encourage child to become (personality trait they have)" e.g. serious, playful. And if their relationship with the child is high, and the child performs a related task to practice this behaviour afterwards, the child can actually gain or lose additional personality traits from this encouragement. This is how over generations sims can have more than the base 25 points available, theoretically.

When Sims 3 came out and sims having *~traits~* was a big announcement, I remember being excited. Sims would have traits that would distinguish one sim from another even further! That was great! And then I found out that the traits were REPLACING personalities.... and I was like wtf????? If I could bring anything back from Sims 2 into Sims 4 it would be personality points. Each and every sims is so vibrant and distinct in sim 2. Sims 4 sims are so similar. I don't see why we couldn't have personality points AND traits.
@weisya

Yeah, I like that I don't have the same sims twice in The Sims 2. TS4 has this walking animations that has so much potential to really bring out a personality, but I do think they're behaving similarly, even having different traits and everything. I can't put my finger on it though, plus I don't play TS4 that much so I'm not confident talking much about it😅

I think they were trying to override the personality system because otherwise it would have been difficult for them (atleast back then) to have Sims performing on two different Autonomy Systems that dictates their behaviour but alos interactions. Tho it would be cool if you would have the personality slider that alters the Sims general Archetyp and so it needs or skill decay and have another System as the Personality traits to give them a more distinct behavioural pattern that ties into Moods and asperations. I don't know why they weren't experimenting with it but don't get your hopes down guys! We have seen the Sims Team already playing with the ideas to bring old systems back how saw it with the chemistry system (which everyone can agrees to was something people were being really fond and keen about it for the Sims4 and wished for its comeback) that will come out with Grown together. Maybe they will bring some memorable and nice systems backs from the older games and I really hope for more traits in general like it was the case in Sims3. You could literally do your dream characater traits wise

@@LightingCatxD That is an intrssting idea. But I think than Personality points will never arrive in TS4, simply because it would probably require realy big changes to the code the game might not be able to cope with. Just like they needed to add infants to free the babies since changeing the babies would have been too difficult. However uf TS5 gets enoght tume in development we could get that.

@@MrREAPERsz The Sims 1 is good too. Just in a different more chaotic hard as nails sort of way, paired with a very distinct tone super creative ideas, and style that is simultaneously extremely expressive and cartoony but also kinda creepy. I'd also say that a decent amount of 1 and 2's spinoffs are good too, though rarely as much as the first main games. 3 and 4 though... Nah. They suck pretty bad. 3 has a small selection of features and gameplay options that make it worth revisiting once in a blue moon, but it has faaaar too many compromises and extremely dumbed down mechanics to even be comparable to it's predecessors, nevermind replace them. As for 4, it is the purest essence of what made The Sims 3 bad, but without the distraction of feature creep and copious amounts of shallow content to chew through. It is just pure compromises and lazy design. The fulfillment of a "what if the Sims 2 but rushed and actually 3" postulation.

One of my favorite interactions affected by traits is the "appreciate --> admire" one. Most of the sims have similar reaction to it and then extremely outgoing (I think) sims react in the way that clearly expresses the meaning of "oh yeah I know I am awesome" and shy sims look genuinely surprised by the fact that someone complimented them.
@EmilyE96

This kind of reminds me of a comment I saw in a Sims 4 video, where someone said that more varied animations wouldn't help the game. But I really think that is one of the main things that's missing - animations are the way the sim expresses themselves, and the Sims 2 had SO MANY. Not even just for sims, but even objects in the house? It's that extra effort to have more "random" occurences to keep you surprised yet invested in your game. In the Sims 2 I could have a character who cheats in games and tends to insult people and I'm like "oh man that's so them", but in the newer games (especially 4) I'm like "Why are you reacting with the exact same animation as my other character with polar-opposite-traits..?" and it takes me out of the experience. Seeing everyone act the same is so jarring, and eventually boring. Also love how the traits were a spectrum? It's something I didn't really take much notice of before but when you pointed it out I was like "oh damn that's smart" - because that technically ups the trait number without the need for more traits. Clever devs back then... I'd love to see a spectrum system in Sims 5 now

This system is so much cleaner than the one in later games. Having a ton of specific traits, most of which do approximately nothing, can't come close to simple sliders. I also really like the "no one is perfect" approach, with the points you can put into the Sims' sliders being limited. Going back to this - or using more specific traits in conjunction with it - would be a huge improvement imo.
@Vincent654

After this video I don’t believe The Sims 5 won’t be as good as The Sims 2. EA and Maxis are way more worried on the visuals and aesthetics of the game than the core programming of the game, this whole personality system is more advanced than the ones in 3 and 4, and it’s pretty possible they might use the same in the new project!
@Andrea-rc1gz
@Andrea-rc1gz Жыл бұрын
I agree but I think sims 3 does traits way better than sims 4 since they actually have a effect on gameplay while sims 4 traits rarely have an effect on gameplay. I actually love giving my sims in sims 3 “bad” traits because it makes certain things harder for them like sims who hate technology but are artistic may be good at writing but get upset using the computer to write (I like to use this one for elderly authors). Or I like pairing shy trait (late night expansion trait) with friendly trait because they may be uncomfortable around ppl who aren’t their friends but still want to make friends. A lot of sims 4 traits conflict with each other so you can’t have sims with complex personalities like in sims 3 :/ Other examples: in sims 3 a ambitious sim can still be a couch potato while in sims 4 an ambitious sim can’t be lazy. Also in sims 4 lactose intolerant is a trait …… so there’s that …

Honestly, things like the Sims 2 personality system and their interests are great ways to both simplify and deepen the Sims lives. The downside to the traits system is that most of them only affect vague things in the system, like emotions in TS4 or idle behaviour and moodlets in TS3. The Sims 2 demanded you understand your sims better and it made the game simpler and more challenging at the same time. Honestly, as life simulators go, it’s unparalleled.

My favourite thing is how Sims 2 traits interact with other features. Serious Pleasure sims have a harder time maintaining their aspiration as they mostly roll wants to go on dates, whereas playful ones roll a wider variety of wants. And of course, traits interact - I've found that shy grouchy sims will watch a fight, but outgoing nice sims will flee. Also if you have an active neat sim, your house will be clean in a kind of germaphobic way. Non-active neat sims are also pretty clean, but not to the same degree.

I think the best system for personality would be a combination of sims 2 and sims 3. Personalities in sims 3 do give more nuances to the wants that are pretty much the same for all aspirations in sims 2 but the behaviour nuances with personality spectrum are so great in sims 2. Perhaps a system that expands on sims 2 system and gives even more traits that you can choose personality points for and then some traits about interests that you can also choose would be a great combination of the twom

Cool video! I gotta look into that guide. It's nice to see many of the trait nuances condensed like that, also in such a fun way 😆 One note though: Consort Capp is more shy than outgoing (4 points) and the telescope slapper is always the same Sim in the hood - the one that was created first, so in Veronaville it's always going to be Consort and then the next Sim after he dies and so on. If the guide said otherwise, that was a lie 😥

I have loved all your sims 2 videos so far! I think my favourite sim from the sims 2 was my playful and outgoing sim, who would do double finger guns at everyone when he walked into a room. Which I thought was SO COOL so I started to do it too irl 😂

One of the most interesting social interactions when it comes to how personality changes it is Appreciate.../Admire, because there are two traits that change it. If the receiving Sim is extremely Shy (0-2 Outgoing points), they will be bashfully surprised by the compliment. If the receiving Sim is extremely Grouchy (0-2 Nice points), they will react boastfully, like "heck yeah I'm awesome!" If they are both extremely Shy and extremely Grouchy, the Grouchy response overrides the Shy response.

i love this type of video! taking a look at the attention to detail of the Sims 2 is really interesting. i had read a lot of the guide but had still forgotten a bunch of the things you brought up lol! all of these small things and combinations for the player to discover is one of the reasons i always come back to this game as well.

Except the aspirations- They were quite limited. Family, Pleasure, Romance, Knowledge, Popularity, Fortune, and Grilled Cheese was all there was. Sims 3's Lifetime Wants was a better implementation of this I think. Ideally, the next Sims game should combine the personality points system of the Sims 2 with the Sims 3's Lifetime Wants. Heck, maybe even expand on the points system a bit. The points system, after all, ensured that all Sims had flaws, just like actual people.

Sim3 three is my favorite sims game but the sims 2 is a very good game. The two things that are my favorites in the sims3 are the open world and the traits, I just like how obvious they are and how easy it is to build a personality. I do appreciate the subtlety and nuance of the sims2 traits.
@theerrantwanderer

Sims 3 is also my favorite game as well, and I liked the traits system in that game quite a lot, but tbh the personality points system in the Sims 1 and 2 ensured that you would always create a Sim that had flaws, just like people in real life- you could not create a Sim in that game that was truly good, nor could you make one that was truly evil (though there is nothing stopping you from controlling said evil sim to make it truly evil)

@@theerrantwandererregarding not quite good, in the sims 3 there are traits that are opposite to each other and there are traits that may seem opposite, but they are not, for example, good and mean spirited. And even evil, he can be friendly and seek friendship

I really hope some future life simulation game (i dont want to root for sims 5 anymore) adapts the sims 2 and 3 system. The sims 2 point trait system can be the very core of the sims' behavior and sims 3 traits are just additional to make each sim completely unique.

Thank you for the video! You had some interesting observations I wasn't aware of despite playing sims 2 for more than a decade now :D Usually, my sims do not have such extreme traits, there are mostly somewhere in the middle, but your footage made me appreciate the details put into this game even more. It was funny watching some of the animations. This game really had some great mechanics to compensate the lack of an open world.

A little unrelated to the topic, but I liked that you introduced the sims as complete opposites but they end up as a happy couple! Was that hard to achieve or do opposites attract in the sims 2? If the topic of compatibility and attraction in the game is something that you find interesting, I would love to hear your opinion about it! Anyways, great video! Super interesting and makes you appreciate more the mechanics of the sims 2!

From what I recall Sims 2 was created with psychology in mind and personality points were meant to imitate sim psyche (along with memory and aspiration systems, that also influence so much in sim behavior). Sims 3 trait system was such a downgrade most of the time (especially because there were so many traits that basically were just part of personality spectrum in Sims 2 and limit of 5 traits (or less for younger sims) couldn't replicate that). Sure, Sims 3 and Sims 4 did some nice things, but it's sad what they give up on in the process. But hey, maybe in Sims 5 there will be some more sim psychology? Especially that Sims 4 recently kinda started to experiment with that aspect of sims, even if those are just relationship buffs/debuffs. Also, I swear that personality points were quite meaningful in Sims 1 as well, not only in terms of social interactions and everyday life (plus I assume skill learning), but alos in terms of housing needs (that weird yet kinda cool feature of Sims 1 that was meant to judge your housebuilding skills)

I love that both the traits and the aspirations can really make every Sim unique and the personality traits are passed down from one generation to another, so they can be slightly different than the 25 points I believe? In any case, both the traits and aspirations also influence how compatible the sims are with each other, along with the turn ons and offs. To add to all of that, the modding community also went one step further and added some of the TS3 traits.

Just picked it up again. The way sims acted in The Sims 2 was just way more charming. One would lie on its side as the other watched t.v next to it. The way they would still turn down advances of their S.O sim if they were low aspiration meter. I thought of this, like, sure, sims needs are met. But are they truly happy and ready to accept love right now? From the cut scenes to the charm of the world to the deep lore we were given behind every towns back story. It truly made me feel like I was watching a narrative, not created and forced by me, but directed by me. That's where Sims 4 got it wrong. They gave us a control station and said, "Tell them exactly what to do. Force their interactions. They'll do it." I mean, the moods were a great addition, but the implementation needed so much work. To see that built on more. Maybe one sim is embarassed. So a specific sim that doesn't like him in a group setting will mock him further. Maybe pull down his pants to get a few lulz from the group. Or someone who is his close friend will cheer him up. WITHOUT ME HAVING TO FORCE IT TO HAPPEN
