Sulsul!
You might've heard that The Sims 2 has the most detailed inheritance mechanics throughout all of The Sims sequel. So, in this video, I’m discussing and comparing genetic inheritance throughout all of The Sims games so far that has hereditary features. This video mostly go over the dominant-recessive feature, exclusive to The Sims 2.

Hi, everyone! Thank you for all the kind words! ‼️Corrections/More Fun Details - The Sims 3 is still able to pass down colored hair, regardless if it's genetic or dyed (not sure why my first try in the video, the child doesn't have colored hair) (thank you @maveurent4445) - Sims 3 has chances to inherit grandparents' feature (for me, it's not recessive/Mendelian genetics like Sims 2, but more like, there's x% chance, but it is entirely possible, it's not 50/50 only from parents as I said in the video, sorry! it is ~54% parents, ~36% grandparents, ~10% mutations) (thank you @disaster4550 and @wikicatyt) [I made a short about it: kzfaq.infoPZX8bOxDeTw] - About Sims 2's CC eyes, Sims' eye colors isn't always dominant, but it depends on what the CC is overrode from, so it is possible for CC eyes to be recessive if the creator intend to do so! (thank you, @lumare) It's so fun reading your comments, I'll be updating here if more comes up!

In the Sims 3 there is also a chance for Grandkids to inherit their grandparents eye or hair colour, I believe it is 25% or so.

sims 4 sims also can inherit crazy coloured hair, just not as a child because those colours don’t exist as child presets, so the game picks a random one until they become teens

Tbh human genetics are so complex that maybe the Sims 3 is the most realistic in this case. The dominant/recessive traits are approximately true for eye colour and ear shape irl, but even then there are so many variations that don’t fit neatly in. That being said, I would like to see better skin colour genetics - generally speaking, a child can end up darker/lighter than either of their parents, so it would be nice to see such mechanics in game as well.

This is why I never understood why anyone would get the equal genetics mod. TS2 genetics are just so cool! I’ve heard players claim that all their sims will end up with black/brown hair - but this isn’t true because TS2 have reciessives! Sure, most sims will but youknow - thats just what real life is like as well? Most people have dark hair!

It is cool in theory but while actually playing, it’s annoying because the recessive genes are extremely rare to pass, let alone from grand or grand-grandparents. Even in real life, I see blond hair and light eyes pass all the time. I don’t really think this is how this statistics works, so equal genetics mod seems more realistic to me.
@ohno7153

Eh, I can see why people would want it. Sometimes the recessive genes just don’t pop up, and they might wanna see some blonde, redheads, grey/blue/green eyes pop up in their game more often.

Well, plus cant you just like, edit their hair color and say it was dyed or something?? Though, perhaps they could also just make recessive genes more likely. That would fix most issues.
@sharielane
@sharielane 11 ай бұрын
Sure the first born in-game gen becomes predominantly black/brown, but it starts to fix itself in the next gen when all the black/brown haired sims with recessives start breeding with each other. You can level it out even more by giving cas made sims recessives genes of their own so there isn't any heterogynous dark-haired/eyed sims to begin with. Same with pre-mades using SimPe.

Also want to mention that CC isn't ALWAYS dominant. Most people who make custom skintones or eyes often 'geneticize' them and place their cc in similar values as the game uses, so it rolls the same as base game eyes or skins. But if they're not geneticized, they're always a dominant trait.

This is one of the reason why I'm still playing the Sims 2. The genetic system is incredible and you can really see both parents in every children's face. There's also the fact that imo, the Sims in 2 have the most easily recognizable features. In 3 and 4, the sims have rounder, softer features that makes them look a lot less unique from one another. When a sim has a child in 4, I honestly can't tell if they actually resemble their parents or not, due to everyone pretty much looking same-y.

I actually think Sims 3 isn't much behind when it comes to the genetic aspect. My sim had a baby girl (named Olivia) with Connor Frio, and when she grew up to a child, I could definitely see that she ressembled her dad more, waaay more, and then she developed her features more as a teenager and started looking like her mother, and now as an young adult, she looks a lot like her mother, but with Connor's lips and haircolor. Olivia now is expecting a baby with her imaginary friend turned lover and I can't wait to see how genetics will play out

Something that really annoys me about the Sims 4 is that if you customize a sim's skintone swatch in CAS using the slider, it totally screws with the genetics. Also it can look so bad if a child inherits one parent's color hue and the other parent's value, it can make the kids look absolutely nothing like their parents and unearth weird skintone swatches that look purple or ghostly.

It was very interesting to watch ! I've been playing sims 3 much more than sims 2, and I've always been fascinated by the genetics of the game ! I'm a new subscriber specifically because of this video! Something that has always surprised me is that the Sims 4 was not coded to rely on in game genetics equal to or moreso than in prior Sims games. Granted, the Sims genome would be far more simple than a real genome, but still, why not just use a basic version of what exists in the real world. I haven't thought about the lack of quality genetics in the Sims 4 in quite some time so I don't recall if anyone has ever asked the devs etc if it was attempted or not. I'll have to look into it. Here's hoping they utilize genetics better in the Sims 5!

And also that when making your cc you can choose where in the range skin color and eye colors would be. What a great video! Your editing skills are amazing! One thing I will say about the genetics system is that I've had moments of "blending," which you basically described in this video with skin color. I've seen it with hair color as well (not sure about eye color, I don't often pay attention to it lol). For example, I had a Sim with brown hair who had kids with someone with blond hair (neither were born in-game). They had 4 kids: one was a brunette, 2 had blonde hair, and 1 had red hair. The red-haired child was sort of a blend between the two. I also had this happen with a Sim with black hair who had a child with a blonde Sim, and one of their kids had brown hair. So, on top of the dominant/recessive genes, an entirely new possibility could occur.

I'd for the genes to not be recessive or dominant, however I would like Sims born in game to have the possibility of Heterozygous genes. That way I could have a grandmother with red hair and at some point down the line have a great grandchild with red hair because the grandmother's gene was passed down but lost the 50/50 chance of being shown. I also love the idea that the game remembers the parents true hair colour.

Is that why sometimes my couples seem to have clone babies even when I’ve definitely rolled the pacifier for randomness and they have different personalities- it’s just that one of the parent’s features are more dominant? So cool! I’m diving into SimPE tonight to find out more about this (especially for one of my BACC families where all three kids are basically identical but one’s Leo, one’s Libra and one’s Aries!)

It's actually quite nice to see someone talk about the subject of genetics that runs through the sims 2, being fascinatingly realistic. However... if Zach and Amelia were the first in their family, what would be the probability (putting them a number) that their children would have red and black hair? (I know it's silly to ask despite the explanation you gave in the video, but I speak Spanish and the subtitles of the video were not activated)

Love the video! The genetics system is one of the reasons I still play Sims 2 and prefer it over the later games. I even made a mod that assigns separate genetic levels to each hair and eye color so that I can more accurately Punnett square my Sims' offspring. (In my mod, the hair colors from most dominant to most recessive are black > brown > red > blond and the eye colors are brown > green > dark blue > light blue > gray. So if you'd been playing with my mod, Gabe and Gabby would be redheads like their mom, with a recessive blond allele each!) Since you mentioned SimPE, I do think it would be good to mention that you can use SimPE to modify genetics. I like to do this in my own games often, usually to see more variety in the children of townies and Uni Sims. The method I use is to generate a random number between 1 and 4 for hair and a random number between 1 and 5 for eyes, with lower numbers corresponding to more dominant traits (according to my mod). If the number I roll is higher than the number assigned to the Sim's expressed trait, I give them a recessive allele for the trait that corresponds to that number. So if I take, for example, Tiffany Sampson from Sim State University (homozygous for brown hair and dark blue eyes) and roll a 4 for hair and a 2 for eyes, she gets a recessive allele for blond hair, but remains homozygous for dark blue eyes. Skin tone in Sims 2 is interesting. There's a range of potential values from 0.01 to an unknown upper limit that you can geneticize your skins to. Base game pale is 0.1, base game tan is 0.3, base game medium is 0.6, and base game dark is 0.9. If you added a skin with a value of 0.2, a sim with base game pale skin and a sim with base game tan skin could have a child with that custom skin tone. If you added a skin with a value of 0.95, then a Sim with that skin tone and a Sim with base game medium skin could have a child with base game dark skin.

I really liked how sims 2's genetic system works but also didn't like that every neighborhood I played in would ultimately be plauged with dark hair and eye color. Great video btw

Awesome video! I’m a TS2 player and I do use some mods to alter how the genetics work (most importantly the equal genetics mod), but one feature that remains and I love is inheriting the recessive genes from prior generations. I have one family where the first gen was a black haired and a blonde Sim, and all their kids had black hair. But in the third generation I got a blonde kid again (even though her parents were black haired and a CAS “born” brunette). It’s always so exciting! 😂

This is really amazing that they went through all that for the mechanics of biology and genes. It's like in my family: mom's got green eyes, dad's got grey/blue eyes, my brother's got grey/blue eyes.... and I have boring brown eyes (from the grandparents). How unfair!

Something must have been wrong with my sims 2. I struggled to keep red hair away. Red hair tried to dominate along with a cc I wish I didn't get. It was a skin tone that was way too red. That dominated all townies with red skin and red hair. It was unrealistic. I like the idea of the dominant and recessive.

Great video! One of my pet peeves when it comes to Sims 2 genetics is that there is no hair colour range. Two sims with only black and/or blond hair genes will never have a child expressing a mix between the parents' hair colours. It will either be black or blond, never brown.

Oh, coming back just to add one thing: If you want to really thoroughly examine a Sim's face for which traits they've inherited, you can export them with SimPE, clean the saved sims up in Body Shop, then go into CAS and compare the templates there by selecting the kid's face, changing skintone/gender to match the parent you're comparing them to, and then selecting the parent's face and seeing how much stays the same. I've done this a few times to see if Sims who looked like clones of one parent actually were.

I would pay 60 dollars no complaints for a sims 2 remaster (adding open world from sims 3, and maybe the building tools and CAS dragging + multitasking abilities of sims 4 to really knock it out of the park since it's able but NO OTHER CHANGES because everything else in the sims 2 is perfect as is tbh)

It's really disappointing that my sims and their pets in Sims 4 looks almost identical to either one of their parents with extremely low variation or mutation rates between the offsprings. Really which the Sims 5 would improve that to something similar to Sims 2 and 3.

The dominant/recessive thing in TS2 always made the neighbours filled with only brunette/brown eyed sims over a couple of generations, so I'm not complaining this one aspect has changed.

Yeah, I've seen it being discussed in forums, but I couldn't find any certainty for the exact mechanism (except mutations chances), and I didn't see it as recessive because I'm not sure if there's any dominant traits that will undeniably get expressed when paired with its recessive trait, but I'm aware of this, if anyone find some sources on how it works, I'll make sure to cover it👍
