The reason Ted the Caver resonates so well is that it plays out so realistically. There are no murderous teenagers with burnt skin, no killer statues, no creepy eldritch monsters that only move when not seen and *NO* creepy video game characters who turned evil for the lulz. It also plays on the fears of claustrophobia and being trapped in an inhospitable place. Every fear is amplified to the highest degree and that's when your mind plays tricks on you.

The worst were the "lost/found episodes" or "bootleg games". They were all generally the same, it was always "It started out like a normal episodes and then everyone's faces started becoming more twisted and evil looking. The main character looked sad" - shit like that.

The scariest thing in that whole document is where he describes a foul smell and air rushing. In a closed system like a cave, it's reasonable to assume that a sudden increase in air flow would be caused by something moving and displacing air. Towards you. *Which reeks of death*. Sometimes it's the monster that you don't see which is the scariest.
@ArcangelZero7
@ArcangelZero7 10 ай бұрын
For a little bit, I was into watching and reading about peoples' experiences with "draining", basically exploring man-made drain tunnels and the like. Very fascinating! I learned that feeling a warm rush of air is just as you said, a lot of it being displaced. Usually this means that a sudden flash flood on the surface (which you cannot otherwise detect from underground) has caused tons of water to start flooding into the drainage system you're currently occupying, and if you don't get to higher ground IMMEDIATELY, you're likely as good as dead. ...Scary as any monster I could imagine...

Ted the Caver is the first ever creepypasta to date. You can't tell whether if this is a hoax or real, but the vagueness and implications is what makes creepypastas more scary, not just all hyperrealistic blood BS or something. That's the power of "show, not tell".

I hadn't heard of Ted the Caver before, but after reading it I can see why it's persisted. The reason it's so realistic is it's actually based on the author's experience. All the photos are of a real cave and although the hieroglyphics, eldritch nightmares and round crystal are made up, they really did hear a scream down there. A friend of the author explains that a particularly heavy vehicle on the surface could be responsible, but they don't know for sure.

I booked it back to the truck and texted the person opening telling them that I didn’t get around to locking up that building. Since the cave was isolated from the outside, apart from s small passage, it could be a build up of some gas that caused those feelings. CO2 in particular could bring feelings of dread, cold sweat and shortness of breath. The stench of rotten meat makes me think about sulfur and that could mean anaerobic bacteria that uses sulfur as a catalyst in their "respiration". The screaming could mean a mountain lion lives in the cave,which could explain the dog cowering,the stench and the feeling of dread,but it would mean the cave is connected to the outside in some way. The paintings could be whatever, either something they made up from regular scratchings or some ancient cave paintings, which should be notified about to the authorities because it's an important archeological find.

The fact they brought a dog in a cave made me extremely anxious even though I know it's not about the dog it reminded me of a recent story my mom told me about a dog who got lost in a cave and ended up just sitting there until a crew found her and she kinda gave up going anywhere because even though dogs have better vision than humans, cave darkness is still too dark to really find your way out. (I used to go caving with my grandmother and this also makes me worry about her because she still decides to go caving and she likes to trespass and look for cool finds especially since she has a way of passing places that most cant because she works for wilderness type jobs)

The 'infamous photo' is of John Edward Jones, who was an avid caver, that unfortunately met his end at the Nutty Putty cave. Despite the efforts of hundreds of emergency servicemen, elite cavers, & even commercial geological experts over the course of 28 hours, he couldn't be rescued nor his body recovered. Would recommend looking him up

I used to go caving in my younger days and I loved it - if my knees could handle it, I'd go again in a heartbeat, it's a whole different world down there. There are 3 things to keep in mind when you do that: - always check the gear before going in - never, ever go in a cave alone. no matter how well you think you now the place - always tell someone on the outside exactly where you are going

KZfaq should pay their creators fairly, but independent sponsors allow creators more freedom. Being treated more like an exclusive employee and not using independent sponsors would mean towing the line and cowing to KZfaq’s rules to maintain “ad friendliness”. As it is creators have to stick to a lot of rules to be on the platform to begin with, but at least they’re not dependent on revenue exclusively from KZfaq advertising (and that’s how YT itself makes its money). Other sponsors can negotiate with creators with a view to the content they create (and any moral questions about it) in mind going in to it, they’re not making their decisions solely with algorithms and machine learning. It allows advertisers to target their desired demographic far more precisely and because it’s an option avaliable to creators of almost any size, even smaller companies with less to spend have a chance to start getting their name out there, it’s a far more egalitarian approach to advertising than some big juggernaut like KZfaq. It is complicated advertising stuff from the field you occupy though, because a lot more people are going to trust you implicitly. You’d better be extra sure that product is something you support before you take a penny.

Ted the Caver still resides in my mind, which is a lot for someone that's extremely forgetful. I came across it after watching Blair Witch and The Descent so it was like eh (I read somewhere too that it's the inspiration for a cave movie, might be the descent). It wasn't until I saw the pictures and further into the story that it gave me chills.

Hearing that true story of that dude that got stuck in the Nutty Putty cave cured me of any desire to go caving ever in my life. The mere thought of willingly squeezing yourself through a tiny hole deep below the ground with no visible way forward? No thanks. I'm not even claustrophobic but that's just going too far. This story did a great job of hooking into that fear

Yeah, that one got me as well. Another story that completely terrified me was a story on Mortis Medias channel about a guy whose friend went into a cave and got stuck in this big opening in the cave but because it was WAY too dark and the whole to get out was way too small, he couldn't get out. Thats not what freaked me out, what freaked me out was the person who was telling the story starts explaining what you would go through physically and mentally being trapped in that level of darkness yet also knowing there is a way out, you just can't find it. Like a so close yet so far scenario. Don't know if it was real or not, it was on his true scary story's videos, but you can never trust people nowadays. Even if it was made up, it was so well written that even if you know its fake, it will still scare the shit out of you. I woke up in the middle of the night and that was playing. Damn near shit myself lol.

The only cave I have been to, and willingly go back to whenever I can, is basically a giant dome cut in half, almost like a concert hall - sunlight hits the back, there are no passageways - it is one huge chamber, with the opening/mouth being the entirety of where a fourth “wall” would be.

If early internet creepypastas where written in modern days: at first you have an original fairly spooky atmospheric pasta, BUT THEN THERE IS MORE CONTENT WITH DIFFERENT CHARACTERS IN THE SAME LOCATION AND THERE IS ALSO A SCARY SPOOPY MONSTER THAT WANT'S TO KILL YOU, BUT THEN WE ADD LAYERS, MAKE THE LOCATION EVEN BIGGER, ADD EVEN MORE 2SPOOKY4ME MONSTERS YOU NEED TO RUN AWAY FROM, EVEN MORE LORE TO THEORIZE ABOUT, AND THEN WE MAKE INDIE HORROR GAMES ABOUT RUNNING AWAY FROM A SCARY MONSTER AND AN ANALOG HORROR SERIES BASED ON THE "LORE" THAT WILL BECOME THE NEXT "SCARIEST GUT-WRENCHING BALL-TWISTING KZfaq HORROR EVAR!!!". GOTTA ADD MORE AND MORE DUMB SHIT AND THEORY LORE SO THE ORIGINAL STORY IS NOW COMPLETELY UNRECOGNIZABLE.
