I massively respect Doc for saying, upfront, that he's been no contact with his father for nearly 20 years and the reasons why. A lot of people need that kind of courage, to recognize when a parent is being toxic or harmful and have the courage to get away from them.

My mom in particular is a very toxic person. Add that she's very religious and you have a mixture I didn't want in my life so I cut her out of it. Plus she always talked shit about my girlfriend behind her back so that made it even easier. Hell I don't even talk to any of my family anymore cause they're always full of drama. It is funny, when I was a kid I got frustrated with my teachers and said something like wanting to be a better teacher than them in the future. My mother told this to my father and he pretty much said the exact same thing Doc's father did. Can kinda relate with having such a controlling and unbending father. A big reason why I am such a big Hermitcraft fan was because my father never allowed me to play games myself, so at the time I latched onto watching Hermitcraft which still remains now that I can play myself

that's why the saying "blood is thicker than water" refers not to the 'family' you're born into(watered down blood relations), but the bonds you make along your life(and the blood you shead for each other "in battle", because old times) at least that's how I see this phrase and I refuse any other saying. especially after I had to play a part in getting my best buddy(who is like the enby bro sibling I never had) out of the clutches of their narcissistic pos of a birther(you can't call that woman a mother) who neither respected their identity nor actually showed care when their chrons disease almost killed them. my parents are okay for the most part. my mom's "dad" was an abusive, violent alcoholic that pulled the "I'm going out to buy some milk" move and my dad's parents are old school "no affection, just perfect performance" teachers. so I can't fully blame them for the generational trauma, because they actually tried to do better than their own parents, but being in their early 20s and not knowing a thing about loving family dynamics I just can't expect that much. I'm just glad they are actually trying to be self-reflecting about the mistakes they made and apologized to me and my siblings for a hand full of messed up crap so far. besides my mom's definitely autistic if not also an ADHDer, because I got diagnosed with both and then it clicked why we're so similar. so I feed her with some skills and tips I've learned since her trust issues and anxiety are too heavy to seek out therapy for herself. believe me, I've tried to talk her into it. even my dad did. tho he may also need therapy to get that emotional blockage out. overall my siblings and I may all be suffering some level of CPTSD from emotionally ill regulated parenting(one too erratic, the other too cold), but somehow as all of us being adults now, it reminds me a little bit of a self-help group. a quite clumsy one. btw my dad's parents also went through a phase of self-reflection. unlike my mom's. I'm glad that old man of her's died all alone w/o anyone visiting him on his deathbed. tbf I had moments where I was about to cut off my parents and I would've done it if they wouldn't have been able to sit down and self-reflect. to be able to do that is a valuable skill to have. I'm grateful to have learned that skill as well, because I almost went down the path of toxicity far enough to not be able to return anymore. maybe that's why I'm a bit more lenient or maybe it gave me insight into when something's genuine and when it's fake idk overall family are the people you *decide* to be your family and that includes the people you are not related to and your pets.

Speaking on Legacy - I will always remember how Doc covered the walls of his perimeter in the artwork submitted by his fans. He was already featuring fan artwork on his thumbnails and shout-outs in each video. He didn't have to take it a step further, but he did it anyway. That spoke so much about his character and motivation to me. There is a quote, not sure where it came from "People may not remember what you said, but they will remember how you made them feel." I already thought very highly of Doc, but for me that just makes him a true Legend, not just in Minecraft, but as a man. We should all try to be more like Doc

I just wanted to add- when Doc mentioned Hermitcraft mattering and being a safe place for people- I know you guys hear stories all the time about people going through tough times and glad they can watch your videos and streams and laugh, but just this week I had been having an absolutely devastating experience, was so down and depressed, and then one of you started streaming or uploaded a video or something and all I could think was “I’m so glad I have this one place of peace and safety to escape to” To many of us, hermitcraft is literally our only escape to safety. Most fans probably just come back for the comedy or whatever. But to a percent of us, the relief of safety we feel when we’re in your chat or watching your videos, it’s everything. It’s not just your content either, it’s the community you’ve fostered in chats, discord, or your patreon servers. Thank you for providing that for us.

I work on software that runs in the cloud (some customer facing) and a big part of what we try to do is ensure that systems are resilient because when you can't use them everything goes to shit. For peoples homes though it needs to be able to run, at least temporarily, with no connection. I can't see a day where most people won't be connected effectively 24/7 to the cloud but systems that people rely on in their lives need to be somewhat self sufficient.

Easily one of the best guests. I've always loved how Doc articulates his thoughts and the fact that he has real world experiences and not just baseless opinions on things, like he's actually lived a lot of what he talks about and cares is super important to me.

I am active in a lot of the hermits' communities and truly, Doc's community is something else entirely. It's collaboration and belonging and he did that by being who he is, he built that. It's so amazing to see. This was probably my favourite episode so far (or maybe on par with Ren and Xisuma's) Can't wait for next week

When you were talking about Hermitcraft meaning something to the people that watch, that is so true. My husband and I love watching Hermitcraft together, our kids never got into it, but it means a lot to have something like that we both like since our interests don’t always align. It truly means a lot to us.

I'm one of these people also, though I don't think I'd say I'm looking for something I haven't found, I just like to explore and learn/go/do things I haven't done before. Many of those things I know I will not continue long term, but they all add something to my experience of life. And occasionally you find something that you integrate into your life, whether it's a job, hobby, whatever.

I just love that Gronkh was mentioned! I always have such fond memories of watching is lets palys. For me personally, he was the one who sort of invented and pioneered the typical lets play back then. Maybe he didn't do it first but damn it was an amazing time. Such a different time of content as well. Everyone was just recording for hours, split the gameplay into 15 min videos and that's it hahaha omg love it.

I love how Doc talks about how the ore snatcher is pissing him off. it doesn't matter that the game is make believe. The rage is real. I do a lot of LARPing (live action roleplay) and there's been times where my in character feelings flare up within me. I get along with the players fine but when I think of the character causing mine grief there's this rage that will build up. the make believe can become very real sometimes :)

Got to meet Doc at the 2016 Minecon, ran into him a few times around the convention and then after the mindcrack panel they did a meet and greet. He was incredibly kind, and fun to talk to! I met one of my best friends through PlayMindcrack, and still talk regularly with people from that server. Even had the opportunity to help mod the server for about a year.

I'm a long time viewer from doc. Although the first few years I didn't have a youtube channel, so commenting was impossible for me. Only when doc was already decently sucessful did I got my account and then it felt like commenting into the void. I still did it, but without any expectation. One of the comments of the weeks was mine and there I got into a miniconversation with doc. He literally remembered my very first comment I made on his channel. That blew me away. I've learned that people can have a social circle of at most a few hundred people. And doc has commments from thousands of people. I never expected him to remember an insignificant person like me.

I think Skizz is the best addition since Grian in season 6. He has taken over Season 10, in a good way. Pearl, Gem and Joel are great Hermits and amazing builders. Pearl is now doing redstone to add to her amazing building skills. Gem is slowly becoming the Mother figure of the group, it's hilarious (especially in the GIGS streams) Joel has that sarcastic British humour and he hates everything, it's hilarious

This was the episode for me, I don’t watch doc often (that’s about to change) however I was glued to this podcast fully immersed. Somehow knowing the man behind the avatar flipped a switch. I’m an artist and it takes knowing and understanding something to make art meaningful. This podcast did that for me. Doc is such an interesting person and I look forward to next weeks instalment. The more Hermits you bring on this podcast the more immersed I become with the whole thing… the people, the community, the game.

That whole part about the importance of the role as an entertainer and how it means a lot to people and can be a conversation starter to build up connections is so true. Because of hermitcraft, I've met my partner, built up my writing and sewing skills and was given an extra push to get into video making. It was a pleasure listening to him articulate himself in such a profoundly human way. Listening to him speak about his desire to be a teacher - I’m reading a Thomas Jefferson education currently - and Doc has developed a leadership mentality throughout his life where he lives his life digging deep to bring out the best in himself to inspire others. It means something because it is real. Hollywood entertainment is detached from reality, actors playing a role. All the hermits are pretty much themselves. Sure there is a little bit of role play here and there but no one is acting a character and then switching it off at the end of the day. By being yourselves you've made the entertainment personal. Also now with things like comments, we can actually inferact with each other. I remember it made my whole week when one time doc hearted my comment. And the ext week i was pretty early to his video and i could tell doc was hearting all the comments so I said something like "watching doc hearting comments in a panick trying to keep up" and he replied something like "lol so true!" And it's all of these little things that make hermitcraft in particular so amazing. And the world downloads too, i could go on for days...
@benrex7775
@benrex7775 Ай бұрын
Doc once picked my comment as comment of the week. And then he said I'm an long time viewer. I thought he just inferred it because I mentioned the mobcorn 2.0. But he actually remembered my first comment I wrote probably 6 years ago. He even mentioned that I wrote that I was already watching him for years back then, but didn't have an account until that time. This is a dedication and a memory which only few people have. Nobody would suspect that if they just give a superficial watch of his videos.

I think you guys should have a big super podcast with the guys that do the Hermitcraft Recap. Because seriously, I think hermitcraft owes a HUGE portion of it's success to the Recap. It would be nearly impossible to keep up with all the going ons across the server if there wasn't a weekly show dedicated to exactly that. I don't know if Mine Crack ever had such a thing, but if not, that's probably a big part of why it died and Hermitcraft has survived.
@Idran
@Idran Ай бұрын
No, there was some low-key drama around Mindcrack that had some of its biggest names split, and after that it just sort of slowly faded away. Wasn't anything to do with views or the audience or anything. It's technically not even dead, just barely relevant in comparison to its height. Also while it's certainly useful and a big part of things today, Hermitcraft Recap only started in, like, season 4 I think? And I don't think it really got super-popular until season 6. (I agree that they'd be great guests though :D)
@didi81_
@didi81_ Ай бұрын
I love the recap but the views are not as high as you'd probably expect so idk if they had THAT big of a part in the popularity of HC. Also the fall of mindcrack had nothing to do with there not being a recap, or there not being enough viewers, they were THE mc superstars back then, stuff just happened and things spiraled. Like Idran said, technically mindcrack still exists, it's just not the mc server anymore, Doc and Beef are still mindcrack members today even
@ethantalbot1811
@ethantalbot1811 Ай бұрын
There was the Mindcrack podcast for a decent bit and they sometimes talked about server events, but it wasn't anywhere close to the Hermitcraft Recap. In those days, folks knew what was going on on the server because the content sucked you in and pulled you around to check the other videos because you were desperate to see their perspectives. They benefited from inventing the concept of UHC and grew their fame through that, and the fact that they were the originators of so many things that are more broadly common nowadays in communities like Hermitcraft. I'm sad that the group split in the way that it did and that that community has moved apart, but everything changes and what matters most is that the people who contributed to that legacy had a positive impact on us viewers and they're out there still enjoying what they do.
