Oh no you put the little dragon in the wallet... now the dragon's hoard has grown. It will now defend your wallet and not let anyone remove anything from it's new hoard. But the wallet can still change hands as per the previous rules.

The dangling sound of coins does not only means avarice. In this town there is not so many riches but change and food and so many types of goods you get in the countryside. That is why here coins, silver and specially golden ones, meant you had another good, a safer one but nor worthier. But there is nothing that lasts long for one to keep. There are always a necessity that needs to be suficied for any greedy man to hoard lots of cash. So it was a real surprise when a traveler came one day looking for a dragon...

I like to imagine that all the people in this town love this little dragon so much that they all have little spots in their houses with the shiniest objects they own just to put the little dragon in when it's their turn to have him. When the newcomer to town gets the dragon for the first time, the other townspeople help them set up their own spot in the house for the dragon. The newcomer then slowly starts putting more and more shiny objects in that spot and it eventually becomes as shiny as the other dragon spots in town. None of the shiny objects will ever compare to that single gold coin though so where it goes, the dragon goes.

I would add that after the exchange the merchants would ask you to use the coin inside the village so it stays there as it’s a familiar sight. You are obviously not obligated, but as you spend more time on your quest in the village, they start to offer you goods at a discount if you use the gold coin with the dragon~

The dragon grows with each gold piece willingly given. After like a year its fully grown and the town just has this dragon protector. The horde spread out effectively between the people (in order for the dragon to remain fully grown,) because while ypu can rob one villager you suddenly have a dragon hunting you down, in order to restore the economy of his town freinds/treasure.

Isnt there a dragon like this in the game, a matchstick dragon or something. Acts like a tiny sentient lighter. I would totally run this cute little npc. I might even add some subquest to find out it was once a full sized dragon of questionable age that ticked off the BabaYaga or some equally powerful fae. The gang may teach the dragon the lesson it was meant to learn or end up facing its adorable betrayal, depending on how its treated. Sounds like a great way to test out the reputation system the DM Lair was just talking about.

Imagine it makes its way to a rogue who just absolutely CANNOT let themselves part with it, and their entire reason for theft, then becomes about finding the ultimate giant hoard for this dragon. Every time though the "hoard" in question isn't good enough (ends up spending it for gear, rations, bail money, etc..) so their absolute purpose becomes just finding the greatest treasure for this wee dragon.

Oh it might be, but... A) it's illegal and heavily frowned upon since B) the little ones grandmother is in at least fleeting empathic if not telepathic contact with her grandkids at all times. She knows of their exact location and the identity of the current holder of her grandkids and should anything befall them that unfortunate individual should know their grandma will be coming along shortly and she is the worlds largest dragon.
