I am a 73 year old Aussie. I remember clearly when pictures of Barry appeared on telegraph poles in Newcastle NSW, my home town, in 1962. They were advertising his first solo show A Nice Night’s Entertainment. Driving past these images my mother remarked “He is riske, and probably morally corrupt”. I quietly thought to my 12-year old self, “I want to see him, he sounds interesting”. I remember the 1950s in Australia from my childhood, and now appreciate the cultural insights that drove him. Dame Edna was the pillar of conservative society, God’s police, the Country Women’s Association local Presidents. You had to conform or you were socially rejected. It wasn’t until I bought, and read, his autobiographies that I realised how unique was his aspect and work on the Social History of Australia, and especially conservative Melbourne. His Les Patterson is an authentic portrayal of pompous males building careers in politics and club administration. It has devastated me to know that now we only have his KZfaq videos, and DVDs of his two Barry McKenzie movies, to look back on. Go well, Sunny Sam, you will never be forgotten.

🇧🇷 Sorry, you are mistaken, "Dame Edna Everage" is known in many non english speaker countries. Well, in Brazil, she is quite known. Barry Humphries is a genius. It is amazing how he created a character so unique and original as " Dame Edna Everage".Do USA citizens- or others english language speakers- pronounce the initial letter " O" in the word " Opossum"? Because I only hear " possum"? If not, why? Why english language seems to be like a " lottery ": you NEVER know what is coming ( in the pronunciation's case) untill it comes. It is crazy. Honestly, this language should be much more simple. Why having letters in words if you will not use them? Pronounce them? Do you have or buy for you or your house things you don't use or are not necessary for you ? There is no reason to make a language that complicated. This is, with no doubts, a negative aspect. 🇧🇷
