A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS MOVIE REVIEW | 32:16 - 34:37
A Fistful Of Dollars Movie Description:
The Man With No Name (Clint Eastwood) enters the Mexican village of San Miguel in the midst of a power struggle among the three Rojo brothers (Antonio Prieto, Benny Reeves, Sieghardt Rupp) and sheriff John Baxter (Wolfgang Lukschy). When a regiment of Mexican soldiers bearing gold intended to pay for new weapons is waylaid by the Rojo brothers, the stranger inserts himself into the middle of the long-simmering battle, selling false information to both sides for his own benefit.
A Fistful of Dollars (Italian: Per un pugno di dollari, lit. 'For a Fistful of Dollars' titled on-screen as Fistful of Dollars) is a 1964 Spaghetti Western film directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood in his first leading role, alongside John Wells, Marianne Koch, W. Lukschy, S. Rupp, Jose Calvo, Antonio Prieto, and Joe Edger. The film, an international co-production between Italy, West Germany, and Spain, was filmed on a low budget (reported to be $200,000), and Eastwood was paid $15,000 for his role.
Released in Italy in 1964 and then in the United States in 1967, it initiated the popularity of the Spaghetti Western genre. It was followed by For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, also starring Eastwood. Collectively, the films are known as the "Dollars Trilogy", or the "Man with No Name Trilogy" after the United Artists publicity campaign referred to Eastwood's character in all three films as the "Man with No Name". All three films were later released in sequence in the United States in 1967, catapulting Eastwood into stardom. The film has been identified as an unofficial remake of the Akira Kurosawa film Yojimbo (1961), which resulted in a successful lawsuit by Toho, Yojimbo's production company.
As few Spaghetti Westerns had yet been released in the United States, many of the European cast and crew took on American-sounding stage names. These included Leone himself ("Bob Robertson"), Gian Maria Volonté ("Johnny Wels"), and composer Ennio Morricone ("Dan Savio"). A Fistful of Dollars was shot in Spain, mostly near Hoyo de Manzanares close to Madrid, but also (like its two sequels) in the Tabernas Desert and in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, both in the province of Almería.

A Few Dollars More "may" be better than The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, but The Good, The Bad and the Ugly has the BEST finale gun fight EVER. This is my word. And as such is beyond contestation. Personally, I would put The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly above A Few Dollars More. It wasn't long-winded to me. There was a purpose for every part of the movie, and I wouldn't change a damn thing. Though, both movies are epic movies.

I'd say Last Man Standing is more of a straight remake of Yojimbo than this. Fistful of Dollars I think would fall under more of a interpretation/inspired by/love letter. The way I heard it is that all the actors spoke their native languages during shooting and then the entire film was fully looped for each language's release. That is why even Clint's lines don't seem to fully match his lip movement as he looped his lines for the English language version. I think it was the standard way of production for most low-budget Italian films at the time.

3:54 The Dollars Trilogy ("Man With No Name" or "Blood Money" Saga) were Italian films, & Italy filmed their movies with no sound so they could outsource popular or young actors internationally. They did this so each actor could say their lines in their own language under the condition they would be given a whole new Italian dub. Then when the film was released in their home countries, they would be offered to dub themselves. Sometimes there would be Italian films where no one spoke English OR Italian, & were still made this way. I heard Clint Eastwood was the only actor who regularly spoke English in this film, & hated smoking to the degree where the director Sergio Leone had to take drags to keep it lit.

13:57 :D that's the fun bit about the whole 'Dollars' trilogy. It's different from American Westerns at the time which usually had clear and obvious heroes. In the Sergio Leone movies they're all pretty much bounty hunters. Looking for some sort of scam (the Good, the Bad and the Ugly has one of the best scams imo xD) or easy money heist to get rich. Ofcourse some characters are more evil than others but none of them are completely 'clean' goody two-shoes xD (this is why I also highly recommend the movies: - for a few dollars more and - the Good, the Bad and the Ugly Since you now started the first in the trilogy. The above two movies would be a nice follow up :) and I would advise watching them in sequence. even though both are great )

It´s called spaghetti westerns because they were produced by italians (and some other europeans), they were shot in Italy and Spain and the filmcrews and actors (including offcourse the Directors) were mainly composed by italian people.

@@David_C_83 It was originally a derogatory name by American journalists for these cheap, low-budget Italian westerns (substitute other traditional foods for westerns produced in other countries like Spain, France etc.), but over time the term got embraced by the fans of these films to become an affectionate genre definer.

Great reaction!!! One of the main techniques that Sergio Leone used in his movies, was the panning in on the eyes. That was what set this trilogy of movies apart from most westerns. It has a way of capturing a character's thoughts without using words. The Great Richard Donner(Superman 1978, Lethal Weapon), who died recently, used that same technique in the Omen(1976).

These guns (if before 1871) were all cap and ball guns with paper carriages. Only Smith and Wesson pistols had bullets loaded from the rear of the cylinder (they had a lock on the patient). Rapid fire of these pistols if you hold down the trigger and feather the hammer but you can not aim since the kickback is strong… But they firing blanks. First repeating Rifle is a Henry Rifle first available in 1862…. Then the 1866 Winchester available in 1867. Prices for originals pistols back in 1964 were quite cheap. I own an original “Elliot Remington old Army”… made mid 1862…. Has the quick release of the cylinder (looked good on paper). I have one dated 1995 “Old Silver” by Pietta. Frame is exposed steel with acid etched engraving with cylinder blued, not engraved. I bought a conversion cylinder and fire Colt 45 cowboy loads in it. The other two look like Colt 1851’s navy with conversions cylinders

Heck yeah. more westerns! Most spaghetti westerns had a mix of american italian and spanish actors and we're mostly shot on location in spain. If you plan on checking out more spaghetti westerns I can give a top 10 I've seen lots of them . Also the shorter version you have of the good the bad and the ugly is the best version imo. You should check out some of kurosawa's samurai films they were a big influence on sergio leone.

First to the party! Quickest click in the west 🤠 Hey Mello, have you seen "Once Upon A Time In The West"? That film is my favorite of Sergio Leone's and has my favorite soundtrack by Ennio Morricone. After you go through the dollars trilogy, I'd recommend checking it out! The cinematography and soundtrack really compliment each other to create a world that feels like a character in its own right. and it's really amazing to see how Sergio and Ennio kept perfecting their craft throughout their spaghetti westerns all the way up to "Once Upon A Time In The West", which was made after the dollars trilogy. Harmonica (the main character) has one of the most memorable themes of all time, and I bet you'd enjoy seeing Henry Fonda play against type as a super savage villain (if you don't know, Henry Fonda was known for always playing stand-up guys, so people were shocked when he played the villain)

1st time I saw TG, TB and The Ugly I was 19ish. I worked with some friends at a Radio Shack and it was showing on a local station one night. When we closed the store, we shut the lights and put every TV we had on. The sound up loud on the biggest stereo we sold. We sat on the floor eating beef jerky, drinking Dr Pepper and smoking those Backwoods cigars like Clint. Stayed until the end when security called wondering why the heck we were still in the store. Good times.

The fact that you didn't know that Sergio Leone based "Fist Full of Dollars" on Akira Kurosawa's means that you're reacting to the actual quality of what's up on the screen, not the reputation of the movies or the directors. There are a number of critics who seem to just repeat what taught to think about iconic films, so it's good to see a more spontaneous and honest take. My favorite spaghetti western is a toss up between "My Name Is Nobody" and "Once Upon A Time In The West" because I love them both so much, but if I'm being objective, I have to say that "Once Upon A Time In The West" is the absolute "must see" of the two. The craftmanship in that movie in terms of the acting, the cinematography, the sound design, and the score will give you chills. My favorite western of all, is "The Man Who Shoot Liberty Valance" (1962).

A lot of people have mentioned Yojimbo and "Last Man Standing". None of them have pointed out that the *original* story is "Red Harvest", a pulp novel by Dashiell Hammett. Yojimbo was based on the novel. So...an American story got turned into a Japanese samurai story that got turned into an Italian western that got turned into an American story. XD

A "Fistful of Dollars" is essentially a shot for shot remake of Akira Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" with the difference being that "fistful" is a western and "Yojimbo" is swords and samurai. In my opinion (as well as those of film critics), "Yojimbo" is the better movie. So when you have a chance, I recommend watching "Yojimbo". You'll love it.

I've been to the place where they filmed this movie many times in Andalucia, Spain...they turned it into the "Oasys theme park" and kept all of the set as it was in these movies. They even have a zoo that goes around the theme park as well as a show that the stuntmen put on where they have a big gunfight...it's just like the gunfights in these movies. Would highly recommend going there if you are ever living in Spain :)
