How is it possible that every village in Thailand seems to have a renowned local food scene, but one of the biggest cities in the country is a complete culinary void?
Scoffed at by Bangkok and ignored by food travelers, Pattaya has long held a reputation as a place you go for a party, but not for a good meal. But in a country packed with culinary surprises, that felt wrong. So OTR set off for a weekend in Pattaya with one goal- to find the city's best food, and to learn the story of the people, places, and events that created Thailand's Sin City- and keep a surprising and incredible food culture alive.

This is so well made and mirrors what I feel about Pattaya outside it's reputation. It truly is like a culinary world city on the level of NY or London except that it's affordable for people from any country. It's like traveling to Europe or US without the costs. I advise people to check out the Carvery Buffet on Sundays at the Sportsman Pub & Restaurant in Pattaya which only costs 499 Baht per person. Pizza & pasta buffet on Fridays for less than 300 Baht.

Thank you for this well researched piece of work on the history of Pattaya, its people and food. What distinguishes your channel from the rest of food bloggers is the history, which I love. One comment if I may have is the translation of the owner of the kanom jeen restaurant. He was emphasising how he wanted to honour his mother who was a street hawker carrying these dishes around the sois and streets of Pattaya in the old days. Now he preserved her recipes, expanded the business and created so many jobs for the people of Pattaya.

No, no, his mother walked the streets of her hometown selling foods in her younger days. When he brought her over to the Pattaya area in her old age, he started the joint to keep her occupied and fulfill her dream of having a restaurant proper.

Almost 20 years ago, I opened an internet cafe in Pattaya. The business was good because I could charge 60 baht/hr. when in the Bangkok at most you could charge for 30 baht/ hr. My cafe could pay me back all expenses in 4 months. After the coup in 2006, business went downhill so I decided to move from Pattaya. Ok get back to the food , I'd tried Full English Breakfast, Russian foods and some weird Esan foods for the first time there. Pattaya, like the other places in Thailand, is the melting pot of cultures. Who cares If it is the sin city when you can enjoy to work or live there.

If you ever come back, it would be great to see you cover another aspect - the fast growing Indian/Arabic food scene. Pattaya is also known as Little Kolkata. @@OTRontheroad 😆😆😆 Indian/Middle Eastern/Arabic investors have been buying up hotels and opening restaurants in Pattaya in a frenzy. You'll find cuisines from various countries and regions all at your fingertip. I've been taking notes on rice dishes to familiarize myself with all the different names based on regions and cooking techniques. Happy to share my insights if your interest is piqued. To find these amazing restaurants, you'll have to rely on Google maps and just click around (although most reviews are bought), or try them on the fly. I think that goes for all restaurants here though. Half of them are not on Google Maps/Trip Advisor/etc. Follow your gut instinct and your tummy will surely be in for a gastronomic treat.

You need to come back. Pattaya is full of institutions and as fascinating as all the tourists are it's the expats that drive the scene. You've got little France, that backs onto Little Tehran that is sandwiched between little india (those dosas) and Lebabnon. On the other side of town we have some of the best korean food with curious chinese eateries. Don't even get me started on the Darkside...

This is great. One thing I really think you should have covered is what the working girls there typically eat, as it’s a big part of the food scene there. Most girls will have som tam during the day, so there you will be able to find some of the best in Thailand. And after work they will often grab street food, so there are a lot of late night street food vendors that you could cover as well. This is not typically what the tourists are eating, so it’s just another aspect to the city.

Honestly that was my primary idea when I came to film. I really expected we'd end up mainly telling the story of Isaan migrants and eating a ton of Isaan food. But the level of the Isaan that we found was below that of Bangkok, and I had two places pinned that I'd been recommended that looked awesome (both street carts) but it's a transient place and by the time we came to film, both were gone, and the neighbors said the owners had left and gone back to Isaan. That's the nature of these travel stories- you just go where the road takes you, so we ended up following a different route.

@@OTRontheroad yeah you told a great story here. You would probably have to go into some bars and talk to the girls to get an idea from them and it would differ from walking street to say soi buakow. I’ve only been there once, so I couldn’t really tell you. Keep up the good work. I’m off to Cambodia today and I might tick off the last thing I haven’t eaten on your top 10 foods

Pattaya has actually always been quite interesting food wise going back to the 70s and 80s.. While the city itself doesn't have much in terms of emblematic Thai food, it has always drawn Thais from different regions making various regional dishes available. But what has always been fascinating to me is the vast array of high quality Farang food available in some out of the way restaurants ... from French, Belgian, Italian, Russian etc. and even more interesting how some of these Farang restaurants have evolved as Thais put their own stamp on the food. Now that would be a story.

Just arrived in Jomtien a few weeks back and still getting my bearings. This video is absolutely brilliant for your references to Thai history - an element I believe that all first timers should research before stepping foot in this regal Kingdom. #loveyourchannel #learnThaihistory #americatalklive

I just got back from Pattaya, Jan 6th, 2024. Spent 1 month there. Two of the places you visited I also visited. One was the oldest resturant on ' Walking Street', overlooking the bay and the other was ' Beef Eaters'. where I got the best cut of beef. I also tried 'Patrick's' next door for beef, My Thai wife is a Chef in Pattaya .

Firstly, your fashion/dress in this video was really good. The black t-shirt and Norwegian brew hat suits you well, and looked neat. Secondly, you really did an awesome job exploring so many aspects of a place that many people think of a rather one-dimension way. The Russian part was fascinating! Finally, I was hoping for you to make a Kanom Jeen spoof music video, playing of Billie Jean by MJ. Shall wait eagerly in anticipation 😹

I would never have expected this video to go the places it did! fascinating. I firmly believe wherever there's a strong working class, there's good food to be found, and there is DEFINITELY a working class in Pattaya.

One of the best beers on earth. I’ve been to Stavanger as well, for their beer festival and some epic food. Egget is such a great spot. And fisketorgot- the best soup ever

OK, forget my knocking your flat brim, the rest of the video was a worthy redemption. That Hor Mok looked good although out of place, and you clearly found some even more interesting dishes in the Russian enclave, and later on in the restaurant dedicated to the owner's mom (plus the spot for the hangover dish, as an inveterate beer drinker I get it). I might still prefer Thonburi, which is where I first tasted real Thai cuisine/street food/culture, but this is worth sharing for my friends and family who might just wind up there on vacay.

As a gay man I have always spent tons of time in the Jomtien area. And one of the reasons has been the food that is to be found on the street stalls on beach road. I've always found the food in Pattaya incredibly satisying. And on that point another fact, between Jomtien and Pattaya there is a little lazy beach called Cozy Beach. Its never crowded and its certainly not crazy touristy. There are two concessionaires on Cozy Beach that rent you beach chairs, and cook you food, if and when you want it. Little places, alnost forgetable. But OMG, that food they cook is PHENOMENAL....!!!!! You should take a lazy day out there and the next time you visit and eat their food. I'm certain you'll love it. PS: If you take the day cruise out to Coral Island from Pattaya, the food they serve there is also pretty decent.

You done quite a bunch of videos associated with US army presence in Thailand, which influenced the cuisine there. To continue the story, I recommend you to go explore Udonthani and Ubonratchathani.

This was so informative and we learned a lot. I had no idea that Cabbages and Condoms was really about condoms. Also maybe I was naive or not paying attention but I also had no idea that Pattaya had this seedy reputation. We choose this city because it was a beach city near Bangkok and wanted to avoid another plane ride so this city seemed perfect. We really enjoyed our stay and now want to go back after seeing this. Consider me a new subscriber.

All in all, a very interesting topic. Been to Pattaya multiple times, and yet never thought so much about the food there, despite food would otherwise the center of my every vacation. Well done! BTW in Indonesia we have Nasi Bukhari, which we got from the Arabs, and of course can be traced back all the way to Uzbekistan.

Thai King: Hey, I love Nic. I want my men to dress like his. Royal guards of a Southeast Asian country sweating their tropical asses off in uniforms designed for the cold north. Also, the Russian guy breaking the usual language barrier by teaching Thai cooking in Russian. Aaaaaawww.
