Larry Gelbert (MASH TV Show, among others) helped write the book of the original play. When interviewed about his career, he was asked about this film, and said very disparagingly, "I could have lived without that being done." The musical is very funny, much more fun than the filmed version. Was revived a few years ago on Broadway.

I'm not sure if this is right, but this beginning scene feels like it really draws from how it must have been for the Romans. Like I can kinda imagine some chorus like this being performed in front of the public 2,000 years ago. Would be really cool to travel back in time and see how this really went down

I wish I could too. I know they didn't sing/speak in English back then, but some things about the performance style were likely similar. The tradition of having 3 different buildings/houses in the stage set is a real Roman tradition and was also used in Shakespeare's A Comedy of Errors which is based on/inspired by some of the same traditions. Forum is based on ancient Roman plays with plots similar to Forum (but I don't think they ever had all of this all in one play before until Forum came along!). Plays where father takes son to brothel for the first time were apparently fairly common in Rome. And there would be several male characters of different ages including an old man named Senex, which really just means, old man. ^___^

Honestly it's beyond me how most people involved with the stage play seem to think the movie is so bad. It's really not *that* bad. I ended up far preferring the stage play of Brigadoon to the movie but still like the movie of it anyway. We all have our own favorites. @@judehutchinson8355 I can't tell if you're agreeing with me or disagreeing with me. I think the basic problem is that the purpose of the song is to indicate that we're about to see A PLAY. It's explicitly asking us to suspend our disbelief regarding the nonsense to come. This opening does the exact opposite. It emphasizes that we're really in Rome and that these events could really take place. "Henry V" does the same thing. Laurence Olivier handled that movie right.
