The actress Kelly LeBrock from Weird Science and The Woman In Red, is the inspiration for this song. Before she was "really" famous, she was in a bar while John Oats was in there, and she out drank and out cussed every man in there. So Oats said: "She would eat men alive". Oats went home and wrote "Maneater".

You're right, Phil, that Hall's voice doesn't show much range on this song. He's got an amazing voice, it just doesn't show on this song. Go for Hall & Oates' earlier 70s hits. Sara Smile would be a great choice to react to.Hall sings it , showing his incredible range.

Aside from just having a great voice in general, something I particularly like about Daryl Hall is his keen sense of how to serve a song. Whether it calls for being more subdued or going all out with his range, he nails it.

“No idea who they are” continues to blow my mind on these channels. I may have been a teen in the 70s, but I know music from the 1940s on because of my parent’s record collection, siblings 45s, American Bandstand reruns, MTV heyday, TV shows, movies, etc. I guess music became very fragmented at some point-no shared knowledge anymore

Surprising to me, also. But you have to remember, millennials have a 5 year memory. Anything older than 5 years is unknown to them. Also, in the past, we heard music everywhere. (TV, radio, shopping, etc) These days, you only hear the music that you tap on your phone to listen to.

A panther is not a specific species, but any large completely black cat. While the most commonly found panthers are leopards, they can just as easily be jaguars, lions, tigers, or, as in this case, a puma. TL;DR yes, it is a puma, but it is also a panther.

'She's Gone", "Sarah Smile" and a bunch of other great songs. These guys have R&B roots. Daryl Hall has had a successful You Tube / television/ You Tube show called "Live From Daryl's House" for a number of years, where an artist, sometimes legendary, sometimes up and coming, will go to Daryl's House, where he's waiting with full band of super talented musicians who have learned the artist's songs, then they play the artist's songs together, as well as throwing in a Hall and Oates song or two. Every single show is great. Some of the featured artists; Joe Walsh, Billy Gibbons, Elle King, the O'Jays (!), KT Tunstall, Train, and many more.
