"Hall & Oates are the best-selling musical duo of all-time with a staggering number of monster hits, but the rock establishment has never taken them quite as seriously as the huge fan base."

You are so right there. I remember back in the early 80's when they were at their height in popularity, it seemed as if they never got the respect they deserved. They had more top 40 hits of the 80's and most were between 80 and 85. Yet, rarely, were they ever talked about or had the superstar status like Michael Jackson or Madonna.

Hall & Oates are a great American pop rock duo who had their biggest success in the 70's-80's. They had a lot of great hits such as "Rich Girl", Kiss On My List", "Private Eyes", "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)", "Maneater", "Out Of Touch", "She's Gone", "Sara Smile", "You Make My Dreams", "Family Man", "Say It Isn't So", "Method Of Modern Love" etc.

Spot on - especially in the 80s NYC was like a flytrap for the hopeful rich. John Oates said in an interview : _"It's about greed, avarice, and spoiled riches. But we have it in the setting of a girl because it's more relatable. It's something that people can understand. That's what we do all of the time"_

A couple of Philly guys, they met while matriculating at Temple U., and formed a band in 1970 that would go on to be major players in the pop, and soul, music scenes for a decade and a half, recording SIX # 1 Hits! They should have EIGHT, as their two best songs *"She's Gone"* and *"Sara Smile"* astonishingly did not reach # 1 when they each came out. Hall & Oates are the best-selling duo in music history!

Funny couple years later we were still running, just different direction.

This song is about a very seductive woman with expensive tastes that she uses men to satisfy. Much like the line "Her mind is Tiffany twisted" in the Eagles song "Hotel California," the lyrics to this song use a luxury brand to develop the character as she is described as "a she-cat tamed by the purr of a Jaguar," referring to the high-end automobile.

A lot of the 80s saxophone, in my opinion, was a style that seemed to be imitating the sounds of large cities...car horns, trains and harbour ship horns all a part of modern city scapes. The echoes especially remind me of living in Sydney Australia hearing ship horns when sounded bouncing off the harbour cliffs and buildings slowly pettering off after many seconds. I assume these would sound the same in any city.I maybe entirely wrong, but for me the saxophone when played like it is in this sob song certainly reminds me of the city at night.
