Glad to see Joey putting up his more niche interests in this channel. The girl on the shore manga is definitely hard to recommend and read just like Oyasumi Punpun. To me it evokes similar feelings to when listening to japanese 80's city pop music cuz that shit evokes emotion that you can't explain entirely.

A girl on the shore is my least favorite manga out of all Inio Asano's works and for a long time I couldn't put my finger on why. Now I understand why: it's purely emotionally driven, not plot driven story. I haven't experienced anything like that in my teen years and there isn't enough exposition of the characters for me to reject the disbelief. But at the same time I greatly appreciated Downfall. Even though I haven't experienced midlife crisis yet, I could understand MC's frustration in life because I've been in the similar state of mind before.
@lasaintepoutine2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, this is the most accurate explanation of that manga I've ever read.

I went and read and I agree with you, it felt like the characters were almost caricatures of what adults think sexually active teenagers are like. We were being told that a character was an obsessive otaku, but were given very little actual evidence of it, for example
@SepetyraNavi2 жыл бұрын
I agree with this. I've been a huge Inio Asano fan for such a long time and I honestly feel A Girl on the Shore is among my least favorite. I still think it's good and worth reading but it's not really one I find myself remembering, unlike Solanin, a much tamer and much older work
@tricksfollies95492 жыл бұрын
You are so lucky you haven't experienced a midlife crisis yet.
@adynat0n2 жыл бұрын
After reading the manga, I'm going to agree with you. When I finished, I went straight to the internet, In I was shocked by all the things I missed while reading it, because I don't have the right background to connect with it. I love that a manga like that exist, Asano is a master like always, but I can't form a complete opinion about it, at least not now. I don't fully get it, and that's all.
@humourlessjester35842 жыл бұрын
As a writer the Girl on the Shore does make me wish I can portray sexuality as not a means to entertain or pleasure my audience, like many manga writers tend to do, but have it be core to the central themes at play in my work. I've read several novel and visual novels in fact that dive into these themes without making it feel like erotica or porn. The Girl on the Shore is that for me, there are explicit scenes, a lot more explicit than seinen dare to go, but the work definitely doesn't feel like porn. I'm reminded me of my early sexual explorations through the characters and what it means to be connected to someone. How the main protagonist goes back and forth if she really likes the guy she's with or is just with him for sex, and how frustrated the guy is because of this. It's a fascinating read.
@ReiChik1ta2 жыл бұрын
A girl on the shore was the first Inio Asano manga I ever read and I fell in love with his type of writing. It's hard to do a movie adaptation and also as imagine didn't work.
@sirBrouwer2 жыл бұрын
I think it could work. However you would need to go at it in the 1930's French realism style of movie. but then that in it self is a pretty difficult type of movie art to do well. As it requires really really good acting.

Inio Asano to me exemplifies the adage that "the more specific the story is, the more universal it becomes." His work is so specific, so singular, and yet the meaning and the emotions are so relatable. We will probably never find ourselves in the exact spot in life that Koume and Isobe were in, but we do understand being confused teenagers, exploring identities and sexualities, confiding closely with someone, being left behind by certain family members. And it's atmospheric and slow and personal and internal and I am not surprised a movie was not able to do it justice. Some stories should remain in the medium they were intended for, for a reason.
@soranin90172 жыл бұрын
I feel like the first page explains the themes and the "point" of A Girl on the Shore pretty well. In town, there's a tiny beach that's never busy, not even in the middle of summer. I used to like walking there, looking for stuff. Like old fireworks. Or kelp. A hat knocked off someone's head by the wind. *you basically never find what you were expecting to. And maybe you weren't expecting to find anything right from the start* it's not necessarily about the plot, but about the things we find and discover about ourselves along the way. The plot is just a way to show this.

I actually purchased AGOTS on Aki's recommendation a few months ago and it's one of my favourite mangas now. It definitely is a manga that I was initially a little shook by with the explicit art portrayals, but when I did finally finish it - those scenes didn't matter overall. The feelings/thoughts I experienced after finishing the manga were those of reminiscing on my own childhood and how I treat those around me now. It really makes you think about yourself as a person and how you can affect others, and how that can shape a person. Granted - when I re-read it now, I skip those scenes lol.

When I recommend Inio Asano’s works I always give caution that they are very dark and mature, and that the characters and the story are portrayed very raw and unfiltered, almost as if his style is indeed to try and make you hate them, feel uncomfortable, or put off. It’s part of the beauty of his works because you could both hate some of its content but love it all the more and the reading journey it has taken you

EDIT: loving this channels laid-back and almost raw vibe. Gonna have to check out A Girl on the Shore when I get some more time (and punpun also). Yo Joey, referring to your office video for music recommendations (I'll leave a comment there too). Based on your mad collection I got a few recommendations. You should check out Ryo Fukui, Funky DL (especially "life after Dennison"), Cise Star, Bill Evans, MF Doom (especially the song 'Sorcerers'), All That Jazz, Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, Fujii Kaze, Lone Catalysts, Kenichiro Nishihara, Dave Brubeck, Pete Rock, Marcus D, Ahmad Jamal, Kazumi Tateishi Trio, and Gang Star. Whew.. you might not like all of them but there should be something in this big mix. Mostly jazz and hip-hop and things inbetween those (no classic rock - haven't dove into that yet haha). I love acting so it's sad to hear that the acting of the two main characters are bad since it's supposed to be a character study film. It heavily relies on emotional beats and character depth to tell it's story. That's probably why it's so hard to do character study films cuz the actors gotta be hella good.
@mandoloriansoju38412 жыл бұрын
I hate to say it but it’s a little difficult to find really good acting in Japan. It has nothing to do with the actors but more so the casting done here. They almost always go for “idols” or they often just fuck up casting cause they prioritize looks (as it seems to be the case in this movie). Solanin is an exception
