DC Johnson Depending on your past experience and location, there are many different ways I can think of. You can use online websites or recruiters for short term or contractor positions. I’ve also heard of Websites such as Flex Jobs, Upwork, Guru, and Freelancer so you should look into them as well. Also, some bigger companies have developmental programs which are short in nature (6 months up to a year) and it’s an excellent way to get your foot in the door. So you can talk to your HR about this too.

@xaznarthx
@xaznarthx 4 жыл бұрын
Do you have to be a very extroverted individual to be a good BA? I'm kind of an introvert and have a hard time thinking about things to say in a group settings and I just sit there. Also I suck at interviews and choke on questions during them even though i practice a million times. I majored in information technology management and currently work as an IT helpdesk analyst at a large company. Thought I could get a BA position out of college with the degree but you know how it goes if the whole experience 2-5 years entry level bs. tbh kind of lost in general what I want now
@RichMillennialMindset
@RichMillennialMindset 4 жыл бұрын
xaznarthx NO! You don’t need to be extroverted to be a good BA. In fact, I’ve met many introverted BAs who are great BAs! I noticed that they’re very good listeners and as an ambivert myself, sometimes less is more. You need to be more prepared for meetings and think about what kind of questions you would like to ask beforehand. Interviews are hard for everyone and it does take time and patience to become better at it. I’ve actually recently uploaded 6 actionable tips on how to become a BA in my channel and briefly touched on the interview portion. So check it out and let me know if you would like to see more tips on how to prepare for interviews. Since you work for a large company, you can apply for internal postings and maybe ask for developmental opportunities as BAs. I didn’t get a BA job right after school either so I ended up working at a software company for three years before getting a role as BA so it does take time to get there. I know how frustrating it can be, but it’s important not to lose the sight of your end goal and where you want to be. I had fear of public speaking for awhile and I’m still working on it but it took a lot of years and practice to be a little bit more comfortable. Trust me, 18 years old myself would’ve never imagined of starting a YT channel. Sorry for the really long response but hope this helps!

Thank you for the great video! I am currently interning for a City government in an HR department and they have an opening for an assistant adminstrative analyst position. I'm just curious if they are similar to business analyst positions because I have heard that they might be. Edwin Cortez Hey!! I actually work for a public company so Im not too familiar with the management analyst position. Since the job title has ‘analyst’ in it, it could be something similar. You should also talk to someone in your HR department and ask questions about that management analyst positions. I think its great that you’ve applied for this position because you are taking actions to get one step closer to becoming a business analyst. I never planned to become a business analyst in the first place. However, when I was transitioning my career and looked at my skill sets, I realized that I was able to transfer them more easily. So if you are external, you are hopping from job to job constantly interviewing or risking being unemployed? Is most of the work done remotely? Thanks
@RichMillennialMindset
@RichMillennialMindset 4 жыл бұрын
@Alicia Not Alice If you are external BAs, you are either working for consulting companies such as Deloitte/Accenture or have enough work experience to work as a contractor. It also depends on the circumstance. If you got hired for a project, you can end up working on a project for a couple of years. I wouldn’t worry about being unemployed or constantly job hopping as it’s unlikely. Flexibility in working remotely totally depends on the company culture. I’ve seen BA jobs which require you to be in the office 100% and my current position allows me to work from home 3 days a week remotely. So this can vary significantly!

The CBAP (Certified Business Analysis Professional) is one of the most popular certifications you can pursue in business analysis. In the past, I've also taken Business Analysis Essentials for Projects which was an in person course which I thought was very useful. In the future, I'm hoping to create a community where I can share more information on how to become BAs, and BA related skill sets and knowledge (e.g. Slack). Im not a data analyst but you should do some research as the career progression path for Data Analysts. BAs work with people a lot including good presentation skills and communication skills. You actually end up writing a lot of documents and have to do presentations. So it depends on how you see yourself progress in your career.

David A Thanks for the comment. I’ve majored in Commerce (business degree) with dual specializations in Organizational Behaviour and MIS (Management Information System). You’re right on in terms of BA responsibilities. I would say personally having some working knowledge of SQL and JavaScript helped me in certain positions but they’re not prerequisites. Most successful BAs have a very strong knowledge of PM and some are certified PMP as well.

Rich Millennial Mindset that’s really cool! We kinda have a similar background in education! I have a business administration degree majored in marketing, completing my data analytics post-graduate certificate and became PM certified with the CAPM... however I feel like during the interviews they look down on me for not having a computer science degree, despite having a working knowledge of data modeling and SQL... I’m interested in getting the CBAP certification but kinda feel it wouldn’t add much value...? Have you considered getting this certification? Thanks for your video and responses! It definitely gives me more confidence!! :)
@RichMillennialMindset
@RichMillennialMindset 4 жыл бұрын
David A That’s awesome!!! Yeah it sounds like we do have similar background in education :) Yes Im definitely contemplating CAPM but Im not sure if I wanna stay in BA role or want to transition into Product Management. Im in pursuit of change management certification since I think it’s critical for BAs to understand change management practices. I guess if you plan on staying in BA roles for 5-10 years, it would be worth it and if you want to stay in BA for a period of time :) However, I’ve enrolled in online courses to keep up with my CAPM knowledge so that I can continuously learn and improve as well. So think about your next 5 year career goals and see if it will become value added. Lastly, don’t let anyone else to judge you or look down upon you. You do not want to work for a company who doesn’t see potential in you!!! Lots of BAs come from non computer science background and we are killing it :)

Rich Millennial Mindset Thank you so much!! You’re so kind and encouraging - that will take you to far/many places 👍 As for the CAPM, I would definitely recommend it, especially if you want to work in projects and product management. I know I was granted interviews for my CAPM certification alone... you could even become a consultant in the future if that resonates with you. I do see myself working in this industry for the next 5 to 10 years so I’ll definitely look into getting the BCAP - thanks for putting it in perspective! Btw, if you’re interested in taking the CAPM, I recommend taking Joseph Philips Udemy course for the CAPM.. that helped me a lot! P.s I’ve subscribed :) looking forward to more content! Thanks! :)

Yeah sometimes learning new technologies or business processes can be a steep learning curve and could be stressful at times. Leopold Van Stotch You know what? Have you ever considered career in technology sales? Based on what you’ve told me so far, I think you would be a good fit for this job. Once you gain some experience as account executive or technology sales, you can build more analytical skill sets to become a business analyst. Oftentimes unless you’ve already had internships, it’s hard to break into any industry as a business analyst. Maybe read this article that I found online and think about this as a stepping stone before you transition into BA. Some companies require their tech salespeople to travel too.
