Our VW Polo 2023 video review isn't like others you'll see - we've done a family test in the base model Life to see if this city car offers enough practicality for the price.
Yes, it's a small car. In fact, it's a light car, meaning it's always going to be better suited to singles and couples rather than young families. But it has plenty of positive attributes that make it a sensible second car for family car buyers who need a compact vehicle for urban driving or suburban life.
But with a decent boot cargo capacity, a good price point (under $30,000), great driving dynamics and comfort, and an interesting design with lots of great color / colour options available, the 2023 Volkswagen Polo might offer more for a family than you might expect on face value.
As a competitor to the Kia Rio, Mazda 2, MG 3, Toyota Yaris and Suzuki Swift, the 2023 Volkswagen Polo Life is a fine runaround car, according to our family reviewer, Emily Agar.

Just took this lovely machine on a test drive. Tech, driving profile are amazing. And it's quick! Being a 1L 3cyl turbo, it sounds really nice inside when you apply some throttle. Plus the addition of wireless CarPlay is a great feature to have. Was just a bit disappointed on it not having blind spot monitoring because of the chip shortage globally.

About turning off start-stopp. Is it like in Citroen C3 where you always need to turn it off every time you start the car? Or does it remember your last selection?

Lovely looking and solidly built body, surfaces are soft to the touch and the overall feel is great. The car looks nice as well.

Great review. My concern is VW long term reliability. I keep cars until they die. I have an Avalon with 182000 miles and won’t die. Also a 2006 Lexus ES and nothing has gone wrong ever. Hard to switch from Toyota products.

I've been waiting for them to arrive.i have the 2016 My 2017. And thought about upgrading as in 2018 they made them a little more roomy.i have decided to wait till next year and see if the prices settle down a bit. Everything has fitting expensive.

The new Polo presents as a zippy little city car, that unlike may others in that class, can also handle country roads with manners. However, my 2006 2.0L Mk5 Jetta Diesel with 215,OOO klm is bigger, with lots of creature features still not found on some new cars and it still sips as little as 4.7L / 100 klms while cruising and has averaged less than 6L over it's life, so I have no reason to update yet unless my 6 numbers come up.

I have a new Polo Life and it handles my local country roads very well here on the south coast of NSW (not far from where the review above was done)…it’s quite composed over the bumps, zippy enough to overtake on the highway and the steering is fantastic. Looking forward to driving it around Sydney in a few weeks time 😊

Polo with hubcaps had been axed? That's got obsolete rusty rear drum brakes behind plastic hubcaps. Though family car Polos were made in South Africa by the way.

Don't listen to gutless cowards harassing women anonymously, it's good to have people of all different shapes reviewing cars to ensure that the seats and design fits as wide a range of people as possible. Reviews should be by people that are representative of the general public.
