That 1870's Homestead

Күн бұрын

It's a windy but beautiful spring day here in Southeast Michigan, so let's get outside together and make some improvements to the homestead ♥ First up, we have new peach tree that we purchased from our local Conservation District spring plant sale. We'll also plant a few new flowering dogwood trees - and we plan to start thinning down the few bradford pear trees we still have on our property. We're also planting (2) new concord grape vines to expand our orchard area from one lonely vine to a total of (3) now. Our brassica plants (cabbage, broccoli) have also been in the ground for about 3 days now, and we're already seeing sings of cabbage moths flying out and about. So the covers will go on the frames today, to keep them out. There are other options for cabbage moths like BT, but we found simply keeping the moths completely out does a fantastic job. We hope you enjoyed the day on our homestead with us, and as always happy growing where you are ♥

We bought 100 trees this year from our conservation district. We got 25 each hazelnut, elderberry, wild plum, and red mulberry for $87 including shipping. It's an amazing service. They ranged from. 2 to 4 feet tall and were very well rooted.

There’s no fruit trees on mine, and I can’t find a tree under $45. Maybe I’m looking in the wrong place. I did type in my local conservation district. You got a great deal, how exciting.

I’ve recently started watching ‘Anne of all trades’ and I think it was about two weeks ago she had an arborist friend go around with her to show how to plant trees and it was really interesting and I’m really glad I watched it. Highly recommend. He also shows how to prune in another video.

I have 3 peach trees and one nectarine, which do well. I couldn’t grow cherries. And my 2nd attempt on an apple crisp failed. Too much shade for grapes. Good you got rhubarb. I love rhubarb. On fruit trees, you can point out the tree root ball is actually the variety’s branch grafted onto another variety’s rootstock. Use pipe insulation to shield against bunnies. I also heard that paw paws and apricots need to have a 2nd tree to cross pollenate, or better at pollenating. I have 4 plums. Santa Rosa has been producing for me. I keep seeing air layering to propagate trees. I need to just get out and do it! No other tips except to water the heck out of your trees the first year, 2nd year, when it gets dry.

Just a little heads up on using that standing water....always be aware of run off....for the most part standing water after a rain means that water ran there from other peoples yards or farm ground that do use chemicals. We are on the farm so I always have to be aware even though we do not use chemicals of any kind that run off from farmers that do does get into the water in our yard. That is why I do water catchment from our house and a barn...then I know for sure where that water came from.

But, I probaby wont order there again.
