Welcome back to the 1870s Homestead, it's Rachel here. Today, I'm diving into the wonderful world of seed starting, and boy, am I excited! After some delay thanks to a visit from our exchange daughter, I'm finally getting my hands dirty with some celery seeds. Here in Southeast Michigan, we're gearing up for the gardening season, and celery is one of the first things on my list. I'm using Utah Celery seeds, and I'll walk you through my process step by step. From sanitizing my trays to choosing the right soil mix, I've got you covered. And those tiny celery seeds? They may be small, but they pack a punch! Stick around as I share my tips and tricks for successful seed starting, from germination to transplanting. Let's grow together! 🌱

We have had minimal success with celery but planted more this year, they are in my greenhouse now which does get into the 80s during the day but 40s at night. They did germinate! Took longer than anything else.

I've done celery, one self blanching and one not. The self blanching wanted to be sown 1cm deep, both have germinated well and look to be about the same size as your seedlings. Loved seeing you interact and include your grandson ❤ xx

Try using a tooth pick dipped in water, then use that wet tip to get a seed to stick to it, then planted right off the pick. I saw some one do that, and it made sense to me.

Thanks for the tips on planting celery. It's something I want to do this year. I guess I'd better hurry up and get going with it since I'm in 6b also. Hopefully you'll do some follow up videos on how the celery progresses. I'm interested to see that. It's great that you have your grandson there with you getting his hands dirty. He has great motor control. I was doing really well with the spoon and soil with the containers. Great education for a little one.

I always plant Tango celery. I've always thought they have better germination, but both Utah and Tango are good. I've never suffered bad germination by adding a little dusting of soil over the seeds. Started ours in early February as well and they're probably 3 - 4 inches at this point and will be separated, transplanted soon. Moving to Missouri soon.

I've done this exact thing with my celery seedlings about a week ago and the seedlings are 2" tall with 3 sprouts on each stem. Last year was my first year starting celery from seed and I planted them way too close together in the garden not knowing how BIG that one tiny seed turns into a huge plant. They got black heart for lack of circulation. Don't make my mistake. I planted fewer seedlings this year for limited space. I'll have only 6-7 plants. So far that seems to be enough for my 3 x 4 bed. They get so huge!

Isn’t being a Grammy great! If you have not tried growing Aunt Molly’s. Ground cherry tomatoes try them this year! Your grandbabies will love them. My Evie could not get enough of them. They are sweet. So going to make sure I have them in the garden plus Lima beans for the first time. I hate Lima beans never did like them, but Evie, she will be 2 in May, like Lima beans. Are you planting things the kids will love but you don’t like too much? Diane Hartley

During the off season, I've grown all kinds of plants indoors: lettuce, basil, parsley and a few other herbs. I have routinely started celery indoors for later transplant in the garden, but I didn't know you could fully grow and harvest it indoors. Thanks for the info.

Started some celery have to ck to see if they are up. I look everyday so anything that needs water i water them then the next time I water lightly then transplant then fertilze half strength but ad yesterday no celery. If they don't germanate I will have to replant. But I planted them february 6th. Colder days shorter so some seeds are now coming are up. Like you said just keep plugging along. I added the plugging along. Lol

How far can you grow Celery from the ones you buy in the shops? I've kept the crown, with the individual celery stalks cut down to an inch of the crown - put it in a saucer of water, and it has started to regrow!!!! Am wondering whether planting it in soil might yield even better results...

Do you blanch (cover) your celery stalks? Mine did taste a little too green. I grew celery for the first time last year. “Our nursery” sells plants. Easy to grow. No maintenance. Nice filler companion plant between the tomatoes cages. I just placed my onion slips order from Dixondale Farms. Did you? I did notice Lowes and Home Depot had Bonnie Best slips for sale last year.

Hi, did you put in on direct sunlight? I have the same problem before as I can't have it germinated but then I found out that you need to put it on direct sunlight to start germinating and it works for me. The first step I did is soaked in the water for hours before planting. You should try it again and hopefully it will works.Goodluck
