I rescued my dobe from Minnesota Doberman Rescue, he was a stray from Texas and was roaming in a pack. He is the best dog I’ve ever had. So smart and gentle, so sweet. Never barks and is now officially my service dog. 🐕‍🦺

LOVING this video! All 4 of my mom's Dobies have been rescues. Her current one is a red one just like Angie! I tend to think that older dobie rescues tend to have a level of appreciation for their new owners, and it shows in their behavior if you give them that needed love and affection.

My wife and I rescued a female Doberman as well. Don't know her real age, we have had her for 3.5 years now. My wife found her on Facebook as well. The vet tech didn't know anything about her, she was dropped off and owners never returned. We fell in love at first meeting. She was so loving and gentle, but what everyone didn't know was that she was pregnant! Three and a half weeks after we took her in she had 4 pupps😲. 2 red and 2 black. We found homes for 3 of them and kept a red female who has been a crazy energetic blessing. We love em both and can't remember life before we had them. Love your channel and content. The only problem we have is tugging on thier leash on walks.

My first dobe was an adult male dobe. He lived to 13. He was 16 months old and fully trained when I got him. When he passed I got my first puppy in over 25 years. oh boy.....did I go through a learning curve. I survived the puppy experience and just got my newest puppy to the adult stage. This is my 4th dobe pup. It's a ton of work but worth it. I'd be fine with another adult coming here. The bond is deeper with a puppy in my experience. But I mourned my first dobe for months and months before getting the puppy. After a Doberman wins your heart you are never the same again.

I'm 50. Up until now, I've never had a dog of my own. I was given a puppy a few years ago. She is a doberman/Rottweiler mix. She was my first to train and everything. I am so lucky. She is always nearby. Aside from when she ran away during a storm, she is very close to me. She comes running full speed when called and obeys very well. My sister got a lab mix soon after I got my puppy and she had all kinds of problems. It would get loose and roam the neighborhood. But, after playing them together, her dog took lessons from my dog and stays in the yard now. My dog is definitely by my side ALL the time. I got a job at a pet resort just so I could keep her with me during the day. I've been around Dobermans at work and they are always my favorite to walk or play with. I am definitely biased though. I will say that the size of the male doberman is kind of intimidating. My female is probably half their size. They all play pretty aggressively so they don't always make dog friends, which is sad.

Whether you get a puppy or an adult dog, there’s an investment you’ll have to make. Either in socialising, educating, training your puppy, or in earning your adoptee’s trust and possibly getting them out of habits you don’t want them to have. It just depends which kind of investment you’re willing to make. IMHO both are definitely worth it. Because I have done both.

We adopted our first Doberman four years ago when she was six years old. She was dumped when she stopped having good puppies. She is so smart, gental and wants to be loved. She has been the perfect dog. We adopted a three year old female about a year ago. The difference between the two dogs is night and day. This one is still a very active puppy. The two dogs get along great and are inseparable. We love both of them dearly. If you live in the Houston area and want to adopt Houston Area Doberman Rescue is a great organization.

I have fostered for our local Doberman Rescue group for 30 years now. I have fostered a range of ages, and have found consistently that the Doberman is one of the most adaptive breeds. Adults and puppies learn so quickly due to their over the top desire to please those they're bonded to. Because of that intense desire to please, they are also one of the easiest breeds to rehabilitate. All of that being said, they are indeed the ultimate velcro breed, so space bubbles are non-existent in their world.

Your last sentence really got me because of the situation me and my family are in at the moment. Several months ago we rescued our first dog ever - a 1 year old male dobie (untrained). He's been very good with adaptation,training, bonding with us. When we are home he is the perfect dog. But when we have to have to leave him alone for several hours a day he becomes crazy - nonstop barking, even howling , destructive behaviours. I have started to try to teach him to go to his crate and stay but I can't see results yet. Any advice from your experience would be appreciated.
@traceyjones7866

@sskl9167 Dobes are creatures of routine to the point of OCD. Because of the intensity of their bond with their family, they do have a tendency toward separation anxiety. Overcoming this takes time and patience and routine. I use the same phrase every time I leave. Crating is magic, but, again, it takes time and routine. If I have one that is anxious about me leaving, I start desensitizing with short absences, 5 minutes, then increasing the time as they stay calm. This takes some serious investment, though, and you may not have the freedom to take that time. I love the crate because the crate can become their "den" or their safe place. Again, it takes time to develop those feelings of security in your dobe. Once they have lost their world, they cling more tightly to their second chance. It takes several months for them to learn a new routine and become confident they won't lose their world again. Patience is vital, but a chat with your vet may be in order if his behavior is putting him or your house at risk. Sometimes, just taking the edge off when you leave is enough to help him feel safe and content, knowing you'll be back. Dogs have a much better memory than we give them credit for, I'm afraid, and he may remember his abandonment or loss of his first family for a while. Another key is adequate exercise. The first thing I teach my fosters is to run alongside my bike. We put on a few miles a day of pretty intense exercise. If that extra energy is used up, their thinking brains are easier to access. Then, we work on obedience or agility or structured play. I never leave the house when they are in an excited state. If that means I practice picking up my keys and then puttering until they're calm again, that's what I do. We just keep practicing the leaving routine until they're calm and confident that I will always return. I hope some of this helps, sorry for the novel! Please feel free to reach out.

@@traceyjones7866 thank you so much for explaining everything in detail, I really appreciate that you took the time to write it. I’m saving all of this information and I will definitely include these techniques in our routine. Especially the trick with the keys to act as I’m leaving. I have noticed he has learned some specific sounds and knows when he hears the sound what comes next, for example I go to the second floor to grab his leash for a walk while he is in the first floor and still hears the sound of the metal parts of the leash clinging and starts freaking out from excitement. I guess same with keys, even if he doesn’t see me he knows I’m leaving when he hears that sound. Otherwise I have made a strict routine for him, everyday we do the same things at the same time of the day (including the separation time). I will definitely try the other suggested methods,too.

My first 2 dobermans were older rescue dogs. I fell in love with the breed after having them for a while. I have raised puppies from birth, and had all ages since. I would say older dobermans are easier to handle , not quite as energetic, and calmer natured. Dobermans have this most endearing quality of throwing everything they have into everything they do.

I have had two rescue dobies, a female and a male, the female was about 2 or 3 years old, and the male was 11 months old. However, I like raising puppies, as you can encourage great playtime activities when they are young, that a mature dog might not find interesting. But all of them love walking!! They can go walking almost all day!! And that keeps me feeling great at 67 years!

Ive had 2 rescues and 2 puppies. Ive found advantages and disadvantages to both. Recues you dont truly know their experiences and what might trigger them. But I've found that they bonded to me hard and fast and they are super velco and have so much love to give. Mine would protect me without a doubt, their loyalty is way above average. Puppies are a lot of work, potty training (although I've found it to be easy with dobies) its still a lot of time and getting up at night to take them outside. And puppies will go through the teething and all the young dog things. But they are a clean slate, I had more control and knowledge about their life experiences, which is be a big advantage. I wouldnt trade any of the ones I've had/have for the world. Its really about someones situation and what fits well for them. I would advise that if you choose to get a dog, make sure to do your research and know yourself well enough to know that you can commit to keeping that dog for all of its life. ❤❤

Three of our Dobermans have been adopted from Rescues. The youngest-who had been abandoned in a park - was about 9 months old. The other two, both owner surrenders, were about 18 months. Rescues often come with some baggage, but the connection that you can have with a rescue is even greater than with a breeder bought pup, or so it seems. Adopting an older dobe is an excellent stepping stone into the breed. Usually by that age you know what the personality is going to be like, they have already outgrown the monster teenager period, and they are so smart and willing to please that training is not a problem as long as you are willing to put in the work, which training requires no matter what age you start.

I've been around dogs for a while, but all smaller non-working breeds. Even a Jack Russel most recently before my dobie and with all the research I did on dobies, I was _not_ prepared for the little biting alligator energy of a dobie pup. Ours is now a year old and a sweet sweet dog, fantastic but holy cow the first six months were overwhelming with the energy level and the puppy constant mouthing and nipping. I love our dog, but they require a lot of constant attention and exercise. If you can wear them down they are so much better, but when the weather is bad or you get busy, they get very anxious and they can get destructive very quickly. It took six months for the nipping to reduce, she still mouths all the time, it's a constant work in progress. It took longer to house train the dobie as well, it was I think well over four months before she would start to give a reliable warning to get her outside and we watch her closely. I highly recommend crate training, I can't even imagine having a young dobie without a crate. They need it for potty training and they need it as a safe space to settle down if they are anxious and pent up. Plan on at the very least a 42" but a 54" crate is even better. We don't have a tile floor room we can contain her, it's a very open floor plan here and the crate is a necessity. Remember, even as pups, they get big fast and can reach everything under six feet high. In a blink they will eat remotes, glasses, tablets, computers. You have to be on constant watch or it gets expensive in the blink of an eye. They have access to anything long before they even know any better. At one year, I still can't trust the dog with open roam, unattended in the house. She has to be crated if we can't keep an eye on her. Temperament on mine is just amazing, sweet, loves people, loves farm animals and other dogs, excellent, but they have to have their people and they need a lot of exercise and stimulation. These are not good dogs if you are not devoted to their attention, please don't get one if you are going to leave them crated all day while at work. They need their people, they are attached to you like no other breed I've experienced.

I do think it's sad sometimes that people view the first year as something to just "get through." Puppies are a lot of work but the work you put into them in the first year you will get back 100 fold when they're adults. Kudos to people who rescue. I don't know that I can ever do it again. The behavior issues and unknown health/genetics isn't something I want to deal with a 3rd time. Taking a puppy and seeing it after all of your hard work and training come together at the end of that first year is extremely rewarding to me. I et compliments on Flint's behavior and how beautiful he is every day.

This is really not true at all..I have a similar story to this story with my black and tan American Doberman, Lily. My son got her from someone in town, had her a week. She was a year and a half old, not spayed, tail docked but ears not cropped (just like Angie, which I love) He then realized she would be perfect for me because she was already house trained, knew commands, and already crate trained and is a real sweetheart. She had many fears though, scared of so many things because she wasn't socialized like she should have been. I've had her almost 10 months now and I'm her 3rd owner (and last cuz I'll never give her up) and if I believed what the above said, I wouldn't have taken her on but it has worked out wonderfully for her especially and for me as well. I'm a lot older than the young woman in this video (61) and I had a Doberman a few decades ago and has always been my absolute favorite breed. I already knew how much time, energy, and dedication it takes to raise a Doberman and I was a bit hesitant because of my age and the fact that I live with terrible chronic pain and that it would be a huge challenge but I was willing to put in the time and effort because they are worth it! I got her spayed 3 months ago and all of her fears have been gone for several months which took a lot of patience but it paid off! Just like Angie, her first owner let her get pregnant (way too young in my opinion) but she only had 1 pup and I later learned that she was a single as well and my son gave me the original owner's phone number, so I called and was able to get more info on her and her birthdate too! She'll be 2 on July 8th of this year which means she was pregnant extremely young, probably less than a year old. I had 2 Deerhead sister Chihuahuas when she came here, but down to one now (passed away) and she gets along with the one that's left very well. Dobermans are very high energy dogs, which I knew but it's working out very well for her and me. We spend a lot of time in my backyard and go for walks as much as I'm able to. My son knew that at my age I didn't want to raise a puppy which also made Lily the perfect fit for me and also for protection since I live alone. He has 2 other Dobermans and a Harlequin Great Dane puppy who is already Huge! If I came across another rescue Doberman around the same age as Lily, I definitely would consider another one but I'm perfectly happy if it's just Lily and I! She's wonderful, undeniably intelligent and sleeps with me and my Chihuahua. I've taught her more commands and she's such a good girl.. my son was completely correct that she was perfect for me and I'm grateful!

I wouldn’t agree. A Dobermann is the type of breed that wants you to earn their trust. Once they’ve given their trust, they’re 100% loyal. I took over a Dobermann that was 6 years old. She observed for a while and would listen, but be a bit distant. Until, one day, she … clicked. She decided I was worthy of her trust and from then on, I was her person. I’ve had similar experiences with other ‘strong’ breeds. It might take time and effort, but if you’re willing to make the investment they will accept you.

Getting a doberman as a puppy was one of the best things i ever did! We bonded and had so much fun learning together. If you have a chance to get a doberman, do it! I would recommend a puppy if you can.

My wife and are really struggling with our 5 month old dobie. He’s a really smart and great boy, but he never settles down. He always wants to play with our 3 year old Lhasa apso/poodle female who is calm and relaxed. She does correct him, but he doesn’t understand it. Since they can’t be together it’s been tough. We have a house and a big yard so he does get to run and burn energy, but it’s never enough.

Two suggestions - find an "easy owner" activity to do with your pup that will burn energy quickly. Train him to play with the frisbee, chuck it, run beside you while you bike, etc. Another thing that will help keep him mentally stimulated are puzzle toys. Here is a video with many different tried and true suggestions for those: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g6mpd699p8iVnYk.htmlsi=n2La5Zf9coXNCiwD Hopefully this will help get some more of that energy out!

I got my boy from the first owner that got him at 8weeks old. He is potty trained and from a search and rescue and service dogs. He was 2.5yr old. He ate up everything in the house all the time! The original owner kept him in his kennel for 18hrs a day. He sleeps in my bed now. He completely gets along with my chihuahuas and german pincher and pitbull. None fight or growl. He saved me from a bad guy that jumped into my bkyrd and a guy with a knife trying to car jack me!

How well do pheromone diffusers work? Considering getting one for my dobies separation anxiety but I've heard a lot of people say it's bogus
@DobermanPlanet
@DobermanPlanet 25 күн бұрын
Think of a normal wall plug-in diffuser that a house might have to make it smell good - most are like that. Basically the premise just like essential oils - for example, lavender gives improved sleep quality, so if you diffuse it into the air, you will, in theory, sleep better. Pheromone diffusers heat small particles of pheromones into the air, thereby calming your pet.

You develop such a strong bond in the early years of a Dobermans life when they pass they rip your heart out. Rescuing an adult Doberman there will never be that strong of a connection and less heartache.

I got my first Doberman back in 1979. I had purchased a home and my Dad didn't think it was in a safe neighborhood. So he got me a Doberman. I didn't really want a dog at the time, but my Dad insisted. Angel was 2 years old, almost 3. She was very easy. I had to train her to stay off the couch, but that was about it. She was very well behaved. When she was diagnosed with cancer 5 1/2 years later, I was devastated. Thinking about it still brings tears to my eyes. I wanted another Doberman and I got a puppy about 6 months after Angel died. This was 1985 and there was no internet; I didn't know Dobermans were so different from other dogs. I worked full time and went to college part time. That worked with Angel, but it was challenging with a puppy. I still have the same dresser, and it has chew damage in the bottom corner from Holly (the puppy) . I just figured I wasn't good at raising a puppy. When Holly was 3 1/2 years old, I got a job transfer to another city that resulted it me selling my house and moving into an apartment. I couldn't take Holly, and I gave her to a friend (who later told me he gave her to someone else.) Time went by, I got married and after a while we got a German Shepherd. When he was near end of life, my husband wanted a Beagle, so that's what we got. We are now senior citizens and the Beagle was getting old and I decided it was time to get a Doberman. That we shouldn't wait longer because we might not be able to handle her. I have appreciated your KZfaq Channel, It has helped in raising Greta. She was a challenge and I admit she did more damage around our house than Holly ever did. But she turned 2 this past February and she is getting much calmer and better behaved. I didn't consider getting a rescue dog, but those first 2 years are tough. I think it is a good thing for people to consider.

to me, there is no shortcut, one has to put in the time and effort to training, exercise and loving the pup...my understatement opinion...
@DobermanPlanet
@DobermanPlanet 25 күн бұрын
Thank you for this perspective! By shortcut we meant that potty training is (likely) already done, so that's one less thing to worry about, the puppy biting phase is finished so you don't have to deal with that, and the teenager phase is through when you get an older Doberman. Pros and cons to both ways, but yes, you're right, they will both still need exercised, trained, and loved for sure!

I had a really bad experience with a rescue doberman. Not all but many end up in adoption because they are just difficult dogs, it's a flip of coin. You may get a great one or get your self in a nightmare. I have now my second dobie whom I raised as a puppy. For what it's worse, I would not recommend to adopt a doberman as first time dog owner.

My 6 month old doberman, just has never bark alerted us for anything. EVER. New people come to our secluded home,,,, No bark he just looks at them. Strange sounds in the night,,,,,, im the one barking, hes relaxing that i will come and rescue him. I myself approach my home late night, stealthy, the garden gate creaks loudly, hes inside, he can hear it all, not a single bark. He barks only when its food time to remind us to feed him. WTF protection dog is this. He is a Euro breed. Quite honestly its all take and no give. He does nothing but sit around and eat and demand attention.

@@leo0986 Fair enough. I accept. But im just saying this because, isnt it in a dogs natural instinct to bark. Wont you be worried if your family member at age 12 couldnt do 5+5 in their head ? Its a natural thing that dogs do, and if my dog cant talk, then id be worried and frustrated.
@DobermanPlanet
@DobermanPlanet 25 күн бұрын
Most people have the opposite problem - that their dog won't STOP barking. But I wouldn't worry, yet. Around 8-12 months is when a dog phases out of the puppy stage and will start barking more. You could train him to bark, though, by using the "speak" command and, if your friend or significant other could practice being weird outside the house, the other one of you trains "speak" inside and rewards with treats. This article can help train that command: www.dobermanplanet.com/how-to-teach-a-doberman-to-speak/.

@@simplysurfing I’d recommend you getting a dog trainer. I’ve read your comment history you’ve left on this channel and I think you’d benefit from one. If your dog isn’t learning, especially if it’s a clever breed like a Doberman, the problem is rarely with the dog but most likely with training methods used. Good luck, you will get there. The most important thing is building a bond with your puppy when they are young. The obedience will come.
