In this video we show you all of the different upholstery foams that we use and how and where we use them for upholstery for the best results! This is a beginners guide to help those who are new to upholstery. We appreciate that there are many different ways in which upholsterers use their foams and there is no set rule but this is the way I was taught and how I like to use upholstery foam for the best results.
The firmness of the foam and the density is not the same thing! Firm is how hard the foam is and density is how heavy the foam is. Always check with your supplier if you’re unsure.

Upholster here in the US. We're pretty much on the same page. Some difference in identification. What you call chip foam. We call rebonded. Although, its all firm. Some is firmer than other. The firmest for like church kneelers, padding on exercise equipment. Density is graded by weight. 1.7, 2.9, etc This would represent lbs per square foot of foam. So hard to get people to understand. Density really has nothing to do with firmness or the softness of foam. But more to do with quality. How long foam will hold it's resiliency. We also use Dacron. Just as you do. Tops of cushions. Gives them a nice " Crown" as you stated keeps the fabric from " crawling " as the cushions are used. Really like your warning. If how Dacron and a drill don't go together AT ALL! 😂 I can certainly testify. That is good advice! 👍

The density has little to do with hardness / firmness, neither does the colour, the various foam manufacturers use a variety of colour simply for identification. The first number relates to kg/m3 of material used to make the foam, what’s missing is the newton hardness which indicates the firmness, the blue is likely a 33/190, the higher the second number the firmer the foam…

interesting, yeah its very different in the US. There are no color standards as far as I know. ILD/IFD (firmness), density, and formulation (HR) are the primary parameters. The only coloration standards I'm aware of are HR vs standard. From what I have seen, recycled/rebond type foam is very rarely used here, but I may be mistaken.

A huge thank you! I've been looking for a video about foam and when to use it and this was perfect! I'm about to start something slightly more ambitious thanks to you, and I was wondering if I could get your opinion? The original seat pad on the PK733 chair I'm upholstering is injection moulded, 3 inches in the centre, tapering to 2 at the outside edges. It's really very dense and firm and sits directly on the the tube springs. Do you think 39H is going to be hard enough if I use a 3 inch block or should I use a composite and put ultra high density at the bottom?

I was wondering if you can switch from sinuous springs to an 8 way hand tied knot suspension? And if I can what size coil spring do you suggest? The sofa's wood frame is 4 inches thick. Also, to save money and get a better quality foam, I bough a good quality memory foam mattress. Would there be any reason why memory foam wouldn't work. I got the idea to cut up a mattress because I was on a few websites where they charge an extra hundred dollars or so to upgrade your cushions to memory foam. Thank you for all of your helpful information.
@faceliftinteriors
@faceliftinteriors 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Travis - can you send me some pictures on Instagram of what you’re changing and I’ll try my best to help you as much as I can. With the coil springs, it depends on what finishing height you want - the ‘normal’ finishing height for a seat is 45cm with the cushion so you can judge the size of the springs you need from that (obviously they will be smaller once they’re tied). As for the memory foam, I’ve never actually used it so I wouldn’t be able to comment on it but as you’ve already got the foam, you may as well try and see how it gets on! Normally I’d go for a harder foam for seat cushions but see what you think 😊👍🏻

Another great vid Were making our own sofa Would you use s springs and web, with foam cushions? I'm trying to create a mix of the lovesac sectional and the cloud for our large but little family. ( large in number, little in age - but growing fast!) So I'm neither one nor other! Perhaps it's why I'm still working it out I was medically discharged from him forces and suffer health problems. I'm constantly uncomfortable and spend allot of recovery time in bed. Our current sofa setup is 2+3 half leather recliners They are old now and I find them more uncomfortable than hiding in the colonels daughters wardrobe, squashed betwixt her naughty nightwear collection and their family jewels, while holding my breath, and listening via my bottom to the RMP chatting with the man himself as he ascends their bungalow grand staircase! I'm wondering whether to spring and web, barrier and foam - then have 5 inch (colour?) with memory foam then Dacron Or No springs and web, instead a removeable wood panel with storage below and the above with a 6 inch (pink?) Memory foam plus Dacron / or a sandwich cushion with a chip foam centre pink, memory, Dacron. No idea if throwing the lot at it would create a comfy effect not usually seen due to bespoke manufacturing pricing, or if only certain foam should go with s springs, or foam, plus memory foam plus Dacron would be just as comfy without adding springs ? The better half wants to make a lovesac (with 4 kids, you'd think she'd had enough! ) I'm still looking for a reputable supplier Looking at durafoam. Also found efoam, but reviews are mixed. Cheers for any advice! (If it's advice about condoms, I've seen it, pinched it, spent it) All the George to you and your family

Haha Hi Darren - I think you’ve won for my favourite comment ever 🤣🤣 I bet your house isn’t boring!! In my opinion, I would do springs (lash them…there’s a few videos around on this, I haven’t done one yet), hessian, then half inch blue foam. Then upholster the seat and do separate seat cushions. I like pink memory foam and do mine 4 and 3/4” thick for maximum comfort. But this is my opinion and your backside may disagree!! I used GB Foam (if you’re from the UK), not cheap cheap but great quality. Hope this helps and sending best wishes to your growing family!! 😊👍🏻

I have a jumbo cord sofa and I hate it, but i cannot afford to replace it so wanted to try and recover it or upgrade it. Id be confident replacing the foam and even making the cushion slips but the thought of strupping the sides kills me incase it goes wrong, and covering over would show the texture.. such a nightmare

Hi Cara! I have a few videos about reupholstering sofa’s (and chairs which are just smaller sofas in reality 😉) - hopefully you might get some tips there. I would recommend stripping the fabric off carefully and keeping the panels to copy them on to your new fabric. That way you know they’ll definitely fit. With lining, foam and Dacron over the top of the frame, you shouldn’t see texture through them if you’re using upholstery fabric. Hope this helps.

Love your videos! What would you use for an antique armchair arm-rest? Would 1 inch firm foam + 6oz dacron be the right thing? #askingforafriend #help

ive just purchased a desk chair, size is great but the cushion is horrible. I want to redo it with different foam and different fabric. Im around 300lbs, and work from home, so i spend alot of time at my desk. 8 hours a day, i need something that is firm but comfortable to sit on for a long time. Any suggestions?

Hi Mike! If it were me, I’d go for blue foam 39H for the seat. We usually use this in bench seating and dining chairs etc. or you could try one inch pink (medium density) with an inch blue over the top…which makes it’s slightly softer but still firm. Depends on your preferences really!

Any way to soften a harder foam? I recently purchased about 250€ worth of the green foam for the seat cushions on an old teak couch with webbing. It is indeed rock-hard, and was an ill-advised purchase.
@faceliftinteriors

Ooh that's a tough one. Maybe see if you can cut it in half and put a softer one on top. Other than that, maybe see if you can get it changed! 👍✂️🧵📐📎⛏️

Very informative video (and I have hit the subscribe button), but I'm still none the wiser. I want to replace the foam in a high back pu leather office chair, just the seat part or squab. I want a foam that will feel comfortable but that won't end up going flat after a few weeks or months. Something that will maintain its integrity for a good long time. Any suggestions what foam to purchase? Your advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

@@faceliftinteriors Hi, Thank you so much for your reply, it's much appreciated. I don't really use social media sites but I just created an account on Instagram. However, I can't for the life of me see how to upload a pic of the chair. I never get so frustrated with anything like I do with social media sites, hence why I don't use them :( So not to worry but I did appreciate your kind offer, thank you.

Firm Blue foam. Depends on the thickness of the cushion...at a guess I would say 1.5" foam on an office chair but hard to say without seeing it. 😊🙏✂️📎🧵⛏️
