Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is a great show. I would argue it's the best Star Trek show. However, many consider DS9's first season to be its weakest. I've even run into people who gave up on DS9 during its first season. While Season 1 has it's weak points, it's also filled with great episodes, many of which are built upon in later seasons. So, to the Trekkie wanting to give DS9 a second try, to the first time viewer, or to the unsuspecting friend of a Trekkie, I present to you a guide to watching DS9.
Please note: I still recommend watching all of Season 1 at some point, but I totally get skipping the unimportant episodes.

Storyteller is not skippable. It's at least worth watching. This episode is important for character development of Bashir and OBrien. Except for this, it's a really good video.

I introduced a friend to Star Trek, in airing order, and when we got to DS9, I warned him, that the first season or two weren't great, but that they were vital for character foundations for the rest of the series. When we'd finished those first couple of seasons, I thought to myself, that they weren't as bad as I remembered, certainly better than TNG's first few seasons, IMHO. I also want to suggest, especially to those watching the first time through - when you get to the end, after you watch season 7, episode 24, "Dogs of War," before going on to the finale, rewatch "Emissary." This is something my friend does, with every series he watches, so I did it, too, and it was so interesting, to see how the characters had grown, and changed, from the way they were when we first met them. It really made me appreciate the rich world these people had created, in their corner of the Star Trek universe. Brilliant series.

That's not a bad idea. I usually watch Trek on the Heroes and Icons channel, so it loops around after the finale to the pilot episode. Then it kinda hits you how everyone aged in seven years.

'Q-Less' was pretty forgettable, although it did set-up DS9's willingness to take previous Trek characters and build upon them, not just use them for stunt casting. 'Battle Lines' is interesting as we see a selfless Kai (Opaka), something that changes later in the series as we meet the future politically motivated Kai. 'The Forsaken' shows what I mentioned earlier, the evolution of previously seen Trek characters; and they did a marvelous job with Lwaxana Troi. It good to see another part of Odo, as he's awkward about Troi's advances. 'Duet' is a two-person Broadway play...powerful. And unlike TNG which saves these types of episodes for Picard (Patrick Stewart), this one is all about the first officer Kira. 'In the Hands of the Prophets' not only sets up the 2nd season, but introduces that snake-in-the-garden Kai Winn; played masterfully by Louise Fletcher...she's so easy to dislike.

Great video Waz! Season 1 of DS9 is the season I've seen the least of. I wasn't allowed to watch the show when it was originally on TV as I was 6 when it started airing, my sister was 2, going on 3, and my brother was 1, going on 2, so I saw "Emissary" because of Picard's appearance in the episode, and that's it. Then when I watched the show in reruns when I was a teenager in the early 2000s, I always seemed to catch episodes from seasons 2-7, but not 1.

Good analysis. I would put Babel in the skip episode category and move Q-less into the ok to watch category. Even though Q was not really a good fit for the tone of DS9, that episode was a decent sequel to Qpid.

I forgot about the episode "Dax" where the future President Charles Logan (from 24) was after Jadzia. Duet is hands down my favorite DS9 episode. But then in season 2 my local affiliate moved it to 2 AM Monday morning so I missed out on this show. And I don't have H&I where I live.

Great video, Waz! I agree with most of your assessment. I do think that season 1 was smart to have some stand-alone character episodes to establish their presence on the station. “A Man Alone” - Odo, “Dax” - Jadzia Dax, etc. Overall, season 1 is a pretty thorough watch, along with Voyager season 1. However I think the best season 1 of any series is TOS. There were so many fantastic episodes that laid the groundwork for what the franchise was. Also, great to see the Duras girls again. I wish they would have appeared one last time on the station before “Generations”.
@JanelleWaz
@JanelleWaz Жыл бұрын
I think Season 2 is the sweet spot for me for TOS: Season 1 isn't bad, but it had a little growing to do. Season 3, on the other hand... 😬 The Duras sisters were fun, though. I kinda wish Generations left their fate more ambiguous so they could return. I'd rather had see them in "The Sword of Kahless" than Toral.

I think seasons 1 and 2 of DS9 are good. DS9 definitely has the best series premiere. The way they use the non-linear nature of the Prophets to explore Sisko's past is very ahead of its time. It's especially interesting to go back to the DS9 after seeing how modern shows/movies like Interstellar, Undone, Arrival, and Russian Doll have expanded on those similar ideas and themes. Also, unlike other Trek shows, most of the bad DS9 episodes aren't terrible or unwatchable, they're just a bit slow. I would say that there are maybe only 4 or 5 DS9 episodes like Let He Who is Without Sin and Profit and Lace that are truly terrible. The other bad episodes are still pretty OK.
