SOLD The third generation SLK from Mercedes-Benz managed to ditch the shortcomings of the previous models and become a potent, competitive luxury roadster that offered a real alternative to the Porsche Boxster or BMW Z4. While I appreciated the styling of the first generation, quite a few people found it lacking if not downright bland, and the 2nd generation seemed a bit confused inside and out. Not so this one - the looks borrow heavily from the SLS AMG supercar and the SL-class from 2013 onward - a nifty conflation of straight lines and sumptuous curves, with the AMG Sport package adding aggressive bodywork and very sporty wheels. The SLK finally looks the part.
Under the hood, the good news continues. The new for 2012 60 degree V6 uses VVT and Direct Injection technology to bring 302 ponies to the table, the same number produced by the 5.0 V8 in the SL pre-2007. The 7-speed automatic isn't as sporty as the PDK or DCT in the BMW, but does have flippety paddles and works even better when shifting by your right foot in sport mode - and the sound from the pipes is glorious.
The interior is very well appointed and comfortable - the seats are designed for comfort, and coddle passengers even on a long drive. The wheel is very sporty, even with the wood trim package, and the ergonomics are crisp and clean, with the COMAND system providing ample infotainment.
So gone are the days when the SLK was considered a ladies' or hairdresser car - sort of. Unfortunately, also gone are the day of the SLK altogether. Rebadged as an SLC a couple of years ago, Mercedes-Benz will cease production of the small luxury roadster with no immediate plans to replace it. Just as soon as they get it right, it's over. Isn't that always the way?
