When I was a kid my family got a Sega Genesis (Megadrive) at Christmas.
I’ve been cursed by a love for FM synths since…
I’m so dang nostalgic for the sounds and music of that era that when this little groovebox was announced I ordered right away!
Liven Mega Synthesis…
M-Sega S-Genesis… ?
I got the flu right when it arrived so I hadn’t spent as much time with it as I planned.
I got better!
It’s battery powered so I take it with me sometimes to play on work lunch breaks, or chilling on the sofa with family.
Here are a handful of patterns I’ve been playing on it. You may recognize couple from games!
Not only do I love the gritty crunchy sounds of this thing, I like how the sequencer works; especially its stutter and random modes. They’re great for fills on drums and grooves on bass.
🦔
For great justice.

Brilliant set of jams - real creative stuff! I could believe that any of these were for actual games back on the Megadrive :D

Thank you very much! Most all of my music is very influenced by that era of games. Time and place kind of thing.

@@RobbekenSynthMusic Oh, I definitely know what you mean - same reason I'd ordered one of these for myself. I'm still waiting on a delayed shipment, but these tunes provide enough good listening to tide me over :D

Same goes for yourself! Thank you very much for giving me listen. I’ve learned a lot from what you’ve shown on this machine. I’ve tried a few of the Liven synthesizers, but this one really gets me to the sounds I’ve been after easy.

@@RobbekenSynthMusic Yes it feels pretty slick to use to me too, mostly because of the decision to remove the Shift knob. I would usually dive in and make new sounds every time I write something too but there's so many good presets by the other sound designers that I haven't felt the need since it launched

@ChrisLodyMusic yeah, maybe getting rid of that shift knob made the workflow even faster. It felt like having a func AND shift was redundant before, but maybe couldn’t really be helped with the amount of functions on some the other Livens. Either way, I think this one is a big improvement and is particularly nostalgic for me!

This was great! I hear many familiar games in there. 👌😎 Megadrive played the big part of the sound of my childhood. I think this might be 'must have' box at some point. 🙌

@@RobbekenSynthMusic Yeah, FM is great! I have Volca FM and I'm trying to figure our how or where could I find iconic Megadrive sounds for that. But enjoy the Mega Synthesis! Looking forward to hear more of these. 🎶✨🙂

Thanks a bunch! I really liked making that polymeter at 3:33 too. It’s pretty easy to set different pattern lengths and scales per part on this.

I loved 0:56 which reminded me of the Unreal ost, because of the sliding lead. 6:40 also was confirmation that this thing can handle some heavy 16-bit metal really well. I'm excited to get my hands on this. Great job!!!

The music at 6:40 sounds brilliant! Is that from a game?
@RobbekenSynthMusic
@RobbekenSynthMusic 5 ай бұрын
Yep! It’s from a shoot ‘em up by Toaplan that had a 1991 Megadrive release in the west. The introduction became infamous for the text’s poor English translation and so did the music; which like much Megadrive music rips, thankfully.

I noticed it has a midi out... how does this work with a DAW?
@RobbekenSynthMusic
@RobbekenSynthMusic 6 ай бұрын
If you wanted to use it with a DAW you would need a way to send MIDI data to your PC with a USB/MIDI cable, a USB MIDI hub, or an audio interface that has a MIDI port. For example, I have an Elektron Syntakt. If I were to use a DAW, I could send MIDI over USB into the Syntakt then over a standard 5-pin MIDI cable into the Liven. All depends on your setup! Whatever you do, you’d need a cable or something between the Liven and your DAW for them to communicate.
