Oh gosh. I'm only 5 minutes in and I actually feel slightly sick with relief. I've never heard anyone so eloquently and relatably describe The Birthday Blues before. I've always felt angry and confused and self-centred, along with the monumental heap of sadness, uncertainty, and expectation (of myself and others) every birthday since childhood. I felt alone. I feel like, suddenly, the suffocation of the experience just became more manageable simply with this solidarity.

I totally understand the "birthday blues". You are not alone. Though I must say that I've never heard it explained so eloquently before. Happy Birthday 🎂

I don't think you are alone with your birthday thoughts. My daughter who is now 35, also goes through these birthday moments with a bit of sadness. She has since I can remember. And I think for the very reasons you are sharing here. I'm not sure if this helps, but you are such a lovely presence in our lives. You have a beautiful heart and this means everything.

I totallyyy get you with the birthday blues! They seem to get worse for me each year, not because I don't want to get older, but because people disappoint me more each year. I turned 30 a few weeks ago, and I had two sets of plans with friends that were cancelled because they made other plans, and I couldn't help but take it really personally, especially because they then didn't text me on my actual birthday. I hate feeling envious of others, I wish I could just be happy for people and take inspiration from them, instead of being jealous. Happy Birthday darling. My daughter feels always the same way. I have a tip for getting the pressure out for a little bit: instal the birthday week. Make it a family and friends tradition. For the people they live with you, they should do all the stuff you hate to do in your household, cook or bake your fave food and pamper you for a whole week. And you can do the same thing for them. It helps and it's cosy and special. Try it! It's wonderful.

My blues are more from what extended family thinks about how I should celebrate my birthday, so I used to feel sad that I wasn't doing those things. My birthday falls just after Christmas and before new years so get what you were saying about the birthday blues, as most people are preoccupied at that time of year. As a result I’ve formed birthday acceptance, I know some people will forget but it is just a day and if they show they care throughout the year then an arbitrary date shouldn’t make you any less happy compared to the day before or after.

However, when people don't call or text me on this specific day, I know it shouldn't matter. Because, I realised that it is way more valuable and special if friends or family check in with you on random days, tell you they love you or offer you a small gift. Those moments I cherish and remember way more then Birthdays, as people are then thinking about you at moments it is not necessarily "expected from them". My birthday is Dec 20th and so you can imagine it has gotten lost in the shuffle a good portion of my life and forgotten so much that I no longer expect people to remember. My 16th was even way too much like the movie Sixteen Candles! I've had a lot more disappointed birthdays than good ones no matter how I try to lower my expectations. My hubby isn't especially good at special days but he's great on the regular days so I try to remember that and I always know that I'm loved too but sometimes I dread my birthday and the inevitable disappointment. This one hit home for me in so many ways….I used to have the same dream of writing a novel and seeing it made into a movie and I used to sketch and write all the time but over time, things and priorities changed. I miss that spark. And seeing everyone there for your birthday brought me to tears - happy for you to be celebrated and just that there are gatherings of fun and love out there. I haven’t celebrated my birthday with anything other than a few texts or messages in a very long time. Glad and sad indeed.

I think it is very good to talk about feelings out loud, and to others. It is sooo lovely to hear how much you love your partner and your beautiful dog. I think special days, make you think more about everything. Good to not feel alone - I am 66 on the 19th November, and spend Birthdays alone with my dog. Folk do send me cards, and I only have myself and Madge my rescue greyhound to make it feel a special day. I do think that Birthdays should be special. Oh this year was my golden birthday too! I'd never heard of it before.It hasn't been a very good year which is a pity, although I changed degrees to something I actually want to do. It seems like turning 22 on the 22nd in the year of 2022 should have resulted in better luck.

Dear Morgan, Happy, belated, birthday, a golden one this year (I had never heard of that)! Wishing many more trips around the sun! I think, reading through the comments, most people seem to experience some form of birthday blues. I do too. I get them twice a year, on my birthday and around Christmas/New Year's. I always say it's a good thing they are six months apart, because I couldn't deal with it otherwise! For the last five years, nobody has congratulated me for my birthday. Not even my mother. It is always a very strained period for our relationship, because we will be doing okay, and then my birthday comes and she will stop talking to me. But she does celebrate my sister's birthday (not on the same day) and that always makes me feel yealous and sad.. even though I know it won't make anything any better. And because I pick what I am familiar with, I always picked friends and lovers to continue that same toxic relationship with. But after my divorce I have worked really hard to try and change that. I have since realized that your friends should not be putting you down all the time, and that it's not normal for friends, lovers and family members to scream at you or even hurt you, because "that is just how they are". But it has made the last few years extra lonely and I have found it really difficult to make new friends, partly because of Covid, but also because I am afraid. I think it is brave to show your face on KZfaq/the internet. As a fat person I have learned that people are not very nice to you, when you show yourself, on the internet... Wow, I did NOT mean to get so dark Haha, I am sorry! I think your openness inspired me to do the same.. Most days I am very happy to be on my own though. I just moved to a beautiful, weird (but that's what I love) apartment where I can actually see lots of trees and feed the birds, every day! I have the best dog ever, and we go exploring every day! I honestly don't know how I would have survived without her. I wish you the very best Morgan, today and in the future 💞
