To be fair Rarran was absolutely on the money with trishula, for a very long time, it used to be a banned card cause you could summon 3 of them turn 1 and you opponent had to start with only 2 cards in hand, to the point that a few years later a weaker version of trishula dominated the game and had to be limited also. it just got powercreeped hard. Also, a good point towards borrelsword is that most boss monsters have effect and targeting protection, but not battle protection so it was also used as pseudo removal.

Imo it’s more like its been kick outa it’s niche instead, like if you aren’t trying to hand loop it then the only reason you summoned it outside of no other options is because you need either non-targeting removal, non-destruction or both in 1 because after that trish is just a 2.7k beatstick and that ain’t high even back during its heyday when it existed alongside more accessible lvl 8 synchros with higher atk and nowadays shenshen took its place with a similar but far more deadlier effect just not immediately so

I'm slightly disappointed Stevie didn't tell you about Trish Loop when he talked about how Trishula used to be pretty good. There's an archetype in the game called Infernity, who all have very powerful effects but cannot use them unless there are no cards in your hand. None of the relevant effects were hard once per turns either, and there was at one point a (very, VERY long) loop through which Infernity could summon the same copy of Trishula an infinite number of times in one turn by constantly sending it back to the extra deck and resummoning it over and over again to banish your opponent's entire hand before they take a turn. Yeah, there were more practical ways to play Infernity, but Trish Loop was definitely something.

Re: Crossout Designator, it came out in the OCG (Japan) much earlier than in TCG (everywhere else). The OCG has a different meta because of having a different banlist, and in the OCG it's much more likely that you are running the same staples/handtraps so it was pretty powerful there. TCG players expected it to be the same in TCG so it was super hyped up when it was revealed to be releasing here, but it flopped because the meta was different. We see the same effect in Master Duel, which is modeled more after the OCG (e.g. Maxx C at 3). So every deck plays the Master Duel tax of 3 Maxx C, 3 Ash, and 2 called by. So by near default, you are almost guaranteed to share 8 cards in common with your opponent, which is already a 1/5th of your deck. Never mind that you can use Crossout Designator on an opposing crossout designator, so that's even more cards in common. And now forgeddaboutit now that the adventurer engine is in play in MD, so there's another whole slew of cards that everyone has in common.

Stevie should of properly explained how Synchro Summons work for Trishula. It might of been done off screen but the fact that you need 3 monster and for the levels to add up matters. Card type is the reason why Links are usually broken despite simple effects while there are some fusion, equip, and rituals with broken effects that see no play. So just glossing over things feels kinda of unfair.

Borrelsword dragon is arguably one of the most impactful card ever released in yugioh. Since it gives so many decks the ability to one turn kill, killing your opponent in one turn. Before this card's release, only selected decks centered around summon big monsters can OTK, but with this card, if you can put at least 5 monster on board, you can just summon this card and end the game by turn 2 or 3. However, this card is largely outshined by another card released a couple years later called accesscode talker, which is better at clearing boards than borrelsword while still making it relatively easy to OTK.

Hearthstone has a different resource system though, and Alexstrasza costing 9 mana makes it much harder to otk with - you are essentially either passing your turn or you need huge mana cost reductions to get the combo off same turn you alex them. On the other hand, life equalizer is used to literally ftk the opponent, before they have a chance to play a single card. I would compare it more to a start of game effect that reduces both player's health to 15, which would obviously be completely unfair.

There's a fundamental flaw in Stevie's perspective that probably need to be addressed. A card being powercrept does not make a card "bad." It's just no longer "the best." Many of these cards spent years limited or banned and at points were metagame defining. No one talks about any competitive endeavor like this. Imagine calling Paul Morphy or Bobby Fischer bad chess players because they played in a time before chess engines existed, or Michael Jordan a bad basketball player because he played in a time where talent acquisition and development was nowhere near what it is today. History matters, just saying.

In modern? So on the most part Stevie is really good, however there is a couple of ones that probably need a bit more context tbh. So I would argue you're actually more on the mark with Borrelsword, the card was good on release and has been a pivotal part of giving decks that struggled to win games or have good win conditions and tried to grind card advantage for the win had a better way to finish games. However since then we have been given better cards like accesscode which effectively is a better way to win as it has big stats and an effect that destroys multiple cards and cant be responded to and fixes out on the issue of just having an effect which double attacks for the very reason you evaluated that yeah just battle effects aren't amazing usually in yugioh. Tyrants Neptune was out for years and didn't see any play but because of an FTK it enabled and the fact that copy effects can do stuff that RND didn't account for it was banned. The card itself never saw proper competitive play because you wouldn't consistently be able to do the FTKs before it was banned, but it was banned to prevent future issues and also to prevent unfun experience's for players. Drident is not even close to one of the best XYZ monsters printed, no idea why Stevie even said a comment like that, this card is more interesting because popping one card a turn compared to other cards people use to make crazy turn one boards is very unimpressive however the easy access to summon and what is perceived as the fact that zoodiac is played a lot more when it was unbanned quite quickly after having dominated the game when it was last legal is why it was banned. The power level itself isn't particularly outlandish however Yugioh also likes to use banlists and sets to rotate what people play for events and zoodiac can stymie this. Trishula can have more of a thought into it also. Because there have been times where decks have created loops where you can summon Trishula 5 times turn one and even some cases summon it in your opponent's turn after and have them lose because they have no cards. The reason why even with these sort of combos and decks its not good is because you can rely on needing too many combo cards to enable this to happen and for much less resources you can create fields that effectively do the same thing far more often. Would be cool for you to do Master Duel and after watching your MTG arena runs should be a lot of fun! If you do anything besides the Solo modes though I would recommend getting Stevie to help you start off the PVP modes as unlike MTG giving you battles against people using pre constructed decks also, thats not the case in Master Duel and you could easily be overwhelmed from the first games you play unfortunately.

@@pokefreakplays I would say that if you talk about either time zoodiac have been prominent. It’s been the fact that you have the 1 card xyz or zeus or broadbull tbh. Broadbull is what made zoodiac to begin with hence why when ocg banned drident and broadbull still allowed for zoodiac to dominate is because of how broadbull enabled such a cardpool of options or to get another starter for the following turn and you’ve already mentioned zeus of dridents return definitely overshadowed the ability of drident in more recent times. I'm still relatively new to Yu-Gi-Oh, but one of the things Stevie neglected to mention is that Zoodiac Drident (at [5:04]) led to one of the few "Tier Zero" formats in the history of the TCG (which I believe is defined as a format where _one specific deck_ wins over 65% of the events it's used in). Because of the whole gimmick of the Zoodiac archetype it was (and still is) _hilariously_ easy to summon a Drident with multiple materials attached to her (which means she can destroy multiple cards over time as long as she survives) and maybe even a few extra effects. Granted, Drident _alone_ wasn't what led to Zoodiac's dominance - there were a number of troublesome cards which enabled the deck - but Drident was always one of their win conditions.

I think the main thing for flying elephant is that ur opponent has to proc it. Why would you ever use an effect on like a 4/4 minion when you can just trade into it. Plus all "minions" in yugioh essentially have charge, so they just just make an answer.

To put context into some cards like Trishula I think your reasoning is correct for calling it good. When it was printed it was amazing to the point it was limited to 1 and even banned at one point. There was a loop where it was extremely broken where you could summon multiple Trishula, however that was a fairly long time ago. The power creep and speed of Yu-Gi-Oh has become so absurd over the years.

Thoughts on each card Mirror Force: Synchro era basically killed this since everyone was running Stardust Dragon, even worse when you set off their Starlight Road and effectively went -a million in gamestate Crossout Designator: Right on the money, this card is insanely good as a tech option since you can even negate Designator with itself, this card sped up the game on its own a decent amount when it's applicable and lets more decks deal with handtraps Zoodiac Drident/Drancia: Part of what made Zoodiac tier one, if the deck was slightly more oppressive it would've been tier zero like TeleDAD, interruption that fast is always insane and valuable Dogmatika Punishment: Wildcard pick since this card is mostly used to make janky decks stronger, using the right cards it's pretty good but you have to remember the ruling around dumping extra deck monsters, it is good in decks that don't need extra deck summons and stall decks El Shaddoll Winda: Very annoying control piece, this thing combined with Grysta and Construct is an absolute nightmare, Shaddolls are past their prime now and can still basically remove an opponent's deck from existence in the right contexts Flying Elephant: I have like 5 copies of this, it's bad, janky, and basically a meme of a wincon, destruction isn't even the most desired removal anymore with spinning and facedown banishes being preffered, good luck running over anything with it even if the wincon becomes live Chaos Space: Discard costs are kinda bad on paper so this one needs the context of Chaos to really be notable, searching BLS Envoy of the Beginning is really good, Chaos is so excessively good with available support that a bunch of their cards are downgrades to other archetypes' and still see a ton of play, but this one's a bit too slow to be a massive staple The Tyrant Neptune: This guy got banned for a few reasons, the main one being futureproofing, the others being that slapping an effect balanced around a body that can be easily ran over with strong stats is insane, Lyrical Luscinia - Independant Nightingale got this one banned along with Supreme King Servant Starving Venom Trishula: This thing brought us true Synchro Supremacy, single handedly made synchros very much worth spamming, can win the game outright if you hit all 3, insane card that, along with Brionac, made Ice Barrier Synchros very strong, until they powercrept it into the abyss and eratta'd it, loses HARD to Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon which is much more preferable and ran more often as a 3 material Synchro Borrelsword: Oh boy this thing doesn't look as good as it is until you see it punch someone in the face for game, great generic game ender and one of the best Borrels along with Savage, shame none of them are locked to Rokkets since that would make them much better balanced Wall of Revealing Light: The wall of sneaky jank is something many would consider strange and bizarre as a card, Reversal Quiz and Life Equalizer are big funny with this thing Pretty good in episode 3, great job!

Stevie's takes are *arguably* some of the most misleading out there. Most of the cards he showed were very good for many formats, but he keeps calling them bad based solely on current meta. If that's the case then Winda should also be called bad, since Shadolls themselves aren't competitive RN. Pot of Greed is also really bad, since no current top decks are using it. Also, guessing how good archetype specific cards are is almost impossible without context, even for YGO players. Drydent, for example, doesn't have such a broken effect until you take into consideration Zoodiacs as a whole. It's even harder to guess when it comes to archetype spells/traps, because often Konami gives the most broken ones as support to archetypes that are completely unplayable.

It was even on the banlist until recently if I am not mistaken. Apparently Ice barriers is an archetype famous for having terrible main deck cards but insanely powerful extra deck cards, and Trishula was the most powerful one. It was so powerful, it got banned and then had a spiritual successor in Necroz of Trishula which had a slightly weaker effect but it was still one of the most powerful meta decks for a while. And Necroz is a ritual archetype which is usually pretty bad. So why did he say Trishula is bad in this vudeo. I don't get it :/

Simple: Link monsters are MUCH EASIER to summon as boss monsters, and there's much less tokens in game for trishula due to those bastards. @@naqib_2365 trish being good back was due to how his effect was non targeting banish which got around common defensive options ~ coughstardustdragoncough~, banishing soemthing in the grave (especially if it was soemthing that can be activated from the grave) meant it robs the opponent of a key resource and sniping a random card from the hand deprived the opponent of slightly less resources however non targeting removal isnt too uncommon these days though most of them is still of the "destruction" sort, trish's effect is only what was just mentioned so once thats done hes just a 2.7k beatstick which that aint too high even during his heyday, requiring 2 non-tuners to bring him out means he needs minimum 3 card in resources which would probably fair better being used for a more offensive link3 monster these days or link climb into much stronger link4 to close the game and as the other person said if you're gonna go for an awkward lvl as 9 for a synchro play then virtual world shenshen exist which is an easier to summon monster that only requires 1 or more non-tuners instead of 2, 100 more atk and its effect is that its very presence on the field would banish every card that would go to the grave making it a more indiscriminate and persisting ver of trish's effect at the cost of not immediately banishing something and not being able to touch the opponent's hand or grave to add icing on the cake; shenshen can return any 1 card from the banish back to the graveyard the first time a monster of yours were to atk allowing the player to recycled any used resources and it can even revive itself from the grave by banishing 2 of your monster of the same type and attribute in the grave which altogether makes it a less offensive but still more deadlier and safer option to summon over trish trish was more or less a card used to push for game if you werent trying to summon him multiple times to destroy the opponent's hand before they get a chance to play through some convoluted combo and such combos tend to be fragile and unreliable while there has always been better cards to push for game with, powercreep is 1 thing but trish basically got kicked outa his niche

Saying flying elephant is one of the worst Cards in the Game is an EXTREMELY false Statement. Its Effect May provide Close to no benefit whatsoever, but it is still a Level 4 1850 Attack Beatstick, which is better than SO Many Cards in the Game.

12:33 Rarran: "You need two card effects in a single turn [...] to stop this card from just winning you the game." This quote makes me think Rarran misread Flying Elephant and missed the part of the card where it only OTKs your opponent *if your opponent tried to kill it last turn.* Otherwise I don't think the way he talked about Flying Elephant makes any sense.

Stevie is not a very good co-host. He can be entertaining but he seems to know fuck all about the historic relevance and impact some of these cards actually had as well as doing a piss poor job explaining the different kinds of card types in a clear and concise manner. I don’t think Rarran even understands Synchro or Fusion. He somewhat gets Link and Xyz. Overall even though Rarran is suppose to be guessing power levels not knowing how these cards work clearly is kind of unfair to him in an already complicated game.

"drident is one of the best xyz cards ever printed" shock master/wind-up zenmaity, mx saber invoker, calamaties, lavalval chain. all copy card effects suck until an ftk enabling deck came out for them, tyrant neptune and the fusion copier guy the shaddolls need a lot more context for why their broken, ie super poly making the cards +alot, shaddoll fusion being basically +2, its not like winda is a polymerization target going -1 to summon for value later like other fusions who gain value after they are summoned, winda has a broken effect AND what your summoning her with is giving you card advantage and i dont get why youd say "tyrant neptune is broken, but trish isnt" they are both the exact same type of card, super deck dependent, if the deck can abuse their effect they are busted, trish has been historically banned and looped for first turn hand loops. yes at the moment shes probably weaker but tyrant neptune was garbage for 99% of its existence also no mention of the infamous combo, turn 1 set 2, pass turn, opponent draw phase, activate wall of revealing light pay 7000 lp, chain self destruct button LOL

I am getting increasingly frustrated with Stevies inability to explain cards through the lens of someone who doesnt play Yu-Gi-Oh. Rarran kept saying how "if your opponent cant answer Flying Elephant, you just win the duel". I dont think Stewie made enough of an effort in explaining how you dont actually need to target it with an effect, because you can just attack over it. Also how even if the effect does go off, you still need to connect with a direct attack (which is a bit harder in Yu-Gi-Oh than hearthstone). This is just one example, but i feel in general he explains their meta relevance too briefly, and as if he is talking to someone who actually has played a little Yu-Gi-Oh, not someone who has never touched the game. It is almost as if he doesnt try to explain Rarran why his thought processes are wrong, but just has some prewritten explanations he throws out. I will give the benefit of the doubt that they cut some of his explanations in editing, but i doubt it.

Unfortunately the more of these videos I watch the more it becomes clear to me that: 1. it's not the card, it's the deck it's in that makes the real difference. A good card can still see no play because the deck it can fit in is not good enough and a mediocre card can prove good if a deck that plays it is very strong (an example would be skill drain, a card that saw some play throughout yugioh's history but was never considered public enemy number one until qliphorts broke it 10 years after its release). 2. a card's strength should be evaluated when it first comes out. Mirror force was insane on release and remained insane for at least 8 years, calling it a bad card because it's been power crept now makes no sense. Cold wave was bad on release but ended up becoming one of the most powerful blowout cards in history. 3. it's impossible to evaluate most cards if you don't know the interactions they have with the deck they are in. Did you know that on your way to make drident you get to summon 2 rats, reborn a monster and search a beast warrior thanks to the other zoodiacs? Did you know that tyrant neptune, a trash card for all intents and purposes, became broken due to a design oversight with a card that was released years later and promptly banned as a quick fix? Honestly I like the content but it's hard to find cards that are just hard enough to guess while also not requiring an essay of explanation and/or prior knowledge to have any idea what they do or if they are good or not.

Thats kinda how all card games work busted effects need a payoff and sometimes designers missed the mark on that payoff or straight up havent printed it yet. I feel the real reason rarran dont get yugioh is he still doesnt actually understand the game. Im an mtg player jus tried yugioh for the first time a few weeks ago and immediatly i understood all the extra summoning rules they arent that hard. Syncro is jus tribute but with specific cards xyz is jus a tribute were you use the tributes for effects even pendulum is jus get 2 numbers and summon everything between em ect. I feel like rarran doesnt undertand these cocepts which makes evaluating a card hard. Its fun too see a busted effect but a hard summoning requirement that a player with no experience could examine. I know some people give stevie crap for not evaluating cards on their history which is so much more interesting to hear but rarran did not know what a graveyatd even is so hes gotta start from square 1.

Yea, I can see where you’re coming from. However, for point 1, Rarran has on multiple occasions said that the strength of a card would depend on the strength of its archetype/deck, and that’d be a completely valid answer. 2, evaluating all cards on release instead of at one specific point in time would probably make it more confusing, because then Rarran would ALSO have to know when the card was printed to effectively guess its power level; trying to keep track of multiple levels of powercreep throughout the years would be much harder than just remembering the current power level IMO. As for your point 3, I agree completely, but that’s just the nature of all card games.

13:50 The thing with Flying Elephant is... sure you can answer it by trying to destroy it twice... or you can just ignore it. The win duel effect only applies if they tried to destroy the card/interacted with the card.. If they ignore, max you just do 1850 to them. A decent set monster can defend, or after one special summon, they probably have a decent card to just attack you.
