Saturday was sunny so I went to Atlanta to catch some trains as I usually do, but when I got there I discovered that the ATCS system was not working from Howell wye all the way to Austell. Nothing was showing up on Trainmon. This makes shooting trains with a drone much more difficult. It takes time to get in the air and get into position. I was able to catch the first train because it was slow and I could hear it coming. A stack train off the Greenville line going into Inman yard. The second train I completely missed as it was moving fast. Unfortunately it was a good one, had a high nose GP38 in the consist. So I packed up everything and drove to Austell. At Austell I was barely able to get in the air in time for an eastbound freight. And I completely missed the GP38 train when it went flying by. No warning. So I packed up again and drove north past Hiram to Dallas, GA and was able to catch it there. On the way back to Atlanta I passed a freight with a load of tractors so I went all the way down to McDaniel street which was still showing ATCS signal. There I caught the train with several loads of new John Deere tractors. And right behind it was another train headed for East Point. I then went back to Inman and shot a stack train going into the yard, and ended up with zero audio recorded, so ditch that footage. I did shoot a few seconds of a train sitting at Jefferson street. Not a great train day as things normally go. So I gave up on that and got some lunch in Chamblee, then went over to the tracks and caught 153 working the yard, as multiple P51's and DC-3 aircraft were putting on a show overhead. We even get to see some paratroopers. As well as a couple northbound stack / freight combos. Ended up having a better time in Chamblee than in Atlanta. If ATCS is finally being phased out I will have to reconsider whether it's worth taking the drone to Atlanta anymore. I'll still be able to catch a few trains, but having to watch so many good ones go by is so frustrating! Ruins a good time for sure.
