No power steering, nor brakes if they had any! Racing over 20 miles or so. They were real race drivers! Thank you so much shell, for posting it!

These men in open cars with no seat belts, no helmets, no safety gear at all, rolling over is breathtaking. I've heard it said the wisdom at the time was it was better to be thrown from a car the might be on fire than being trapped and burned to death. Also seeing spectators along the edge of the course is incredible.

That is true: and they were right in a way. Their suits didn’t stand a chance against the blaze, and of course, they never thought of wearing helmets.

The oldest documented person alive today was born Jan 2nd 1903 and she's a Japanese woman. She could have almost been there for that first race as a baby in 1902, and that's pretty wild when you think about it. That and the fact that she's about the sme age as ppl like Bob Hope, George Burns, Lucky Luciano and Al Capone.
