I also think the analogy of if there was no sound for the a movie for all the hearing people, they would get right on that! But if you’re deaf, TB! I’ve never seen those glasses, thanks for sharing your story.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I am hard of hearing myself and I did not know that these devices are available to use during movies! I usually just don't go to the movies because I feel they are a waste of money if I can't hear what is going on. I will definitely be looking into these devices and see if any theaters around me have them (I am from Australia). I am also interested in how many signs are the same between Auslan and ASL

Thank you so much for posting this video! I do think that closed captions should be at every movie theater. It is so much more convenient, and it just seems so much easier. Hi Courtney!! It's Ajay! O.M.G---I can totally relate to this situation when Jeska and I go to the movies!!! It's so hit and miss, and really frustrating. We'll do the same thing: call and make sure they have a device, that they work, etc. But there was even a time that the device didn't work (I walked out of the movie multiple times to try and fix it) and I ended up interpreting the damn movie myself (Luckily, it was limited dialogue because it was a movie strongly visual, but STILL) It frustrates me when a theatre (this one in particular is local) proudly places a little sign up front saying that they have CC/Accessibility for Deaf options, but yet NOBODY there knew how to use them....literally nobody. It was so GRR!! Haha, sorry I'm getting worked up again myself :P I wish our theatres here at the glasses device, those are so much better. There needs to be some kind of standardization that takes place among all theatres with the most current technical device, y'know? Great video! :)

AJAY!!! I MISS YOU!!!!!!! YOU INTERPRETED THE MOVIE!? Zach would never stay to have me interpret. And I don't know if I could go that long, movies are fast pace and so many characters, and its dark in the theaters. It is definitely very frustrating!!! Hope you're doing well!! :D

I live about a half mile from the theater you went to at the end with the nephew's and studied ASL right down the street at LBCC, great ASL program and teachers there BTW. It is good to know they serve the deaf community well there. As a side note C. I am sooo jealous of your signing ability and how fliud you are with it. I do not get to practice nearly enough of it. In Malaysia where I live, all the Hollywood movies or movies in English have subtitles in the national language and Chinese when they're shown in the cinema. English shows on TV have subtitles in the national language, too. (The national language is Bahasa Malaysia and it is the medium of instruction used in all public schools, so everyone knows it, even though some adults may not be very fluent in it.) If a cinema movie is in a language other than English, there'll be English subtitles. I never thought of how helpful this must be for the deaf community. You guys are opening my eyes a lot.

This is all very interesting from a British standpoint. I have two points. The first is that, as far as I'm aware on googling, there is no law in this country requiring equal access and devices in cinemas for those who are deaf, and what opportunities there are assume the deaf person wears a hearing aid. It was a revelation to learn that alternatives can be provided in America. The second is that I initially thought the devices would offer sign language in translation, but that, in fact, they provide standard written language. Now - this is where I don't wish to be rude or condemning - but in Britain the attainment of written English language is still, regrettably, poor for the deaf and thus I'd like to ask Zach how he has learned such familiarity with American written language, particularly in the case of films where the dialogue can be so idiomatic. Adore you both. Thanks, Robert.

That’s not true, I’m fully deaf and I can write perfectly well in written English - more so than many hearing people. It’s not that difficult if you were taught in a mainstream school. (I’m from the UK too) generally nobody gets taught to write in any other way but written English (in English order, i mean) but true, that some Deaf people who’s first language is sign language might still write in the order that they sign in (BSL order) but In general, we are all taught to write in English the same way that everybody else does. What you just said is very, very dangerously close to saying/implying that deaf people are dumb (deaf and dumb) and dangerously close to say it is difficult to educate us. That is extremely incorrect.
@2eleven48
@2eleven48 3 жыл бұрын
@@asassynation9955 ...I'm very interested in reading your response about learning and writing English in a mainstream school. However, my experience working with the deaf and having deaf friends is that they struggle with writing and written English. Indeed, most haven't attended a standard mainstream school (unless, perhaps, there is support provision for deaf students). We could discuss this for a very long time, because the deaf and hearing communities still have a long way to go to form any sort of integration In the meanwhile, I utterly reject any implication that I perceive anyone with a loss of hearing as 'dumb'. Shame on you for suggesting so. Robert, UK.

Yes! I used to work for Regal Cinemas. We had an earlier and bulkier form of the glasses. However, the Deaf people in my area are old and very prideful. None of them would go see movies unless it was a CC screening because "The glasses scream LOOK AT ME I'M DEAF!" Honestly, i don't care what people think of me and never have so I don't get it.

Awww! Sorry you had such a bad experience! here in the UK, we don’t have any such devices, we have to travel miles to the nearest cinema that has captions on their movies at certain times of the day, so we’ve given up on the idea of Cinema full stop. I really wish we had enough one of those devices here in the UK, I’d be at the. Cinema every week! I LOOOVE watching films! Instead, we have to wait until the films come out on DVD and watch them at home where we can have the captions. I really hope one of these devices make their way to the UK soon!

this is so frustrating. i currently work at a movie theater (not pacific) and we offer the headphones and captiviews. every so often, someone will return the captiviews because it’s malfunctioning. i always feel terrible because there’s nothing i can personally do besides trade out the machines. i WISH we offered the glasses and/or open captioning. i try to tell my managers that corporate needs to accommodate for the Deaf community in our area, not the other way around. i hope Pacific is able to fix their captiviews or provide the glasses.

The movie Theaters should always make sure their devices work. Why have them if they are not going to work all the time. I have not gone to the movies in 7 years. When I went with my Deaf and hard of hearing friends. I call our local theater and asked if they have devices for deaf and hard of hearing. They said yes they do. So we went to the movies on the weekend. We went to get our tickets and the devices. They handed my friends headphones. I asked them if they had CC device because the headphones are no use for my friends. The Theater said headphones are all they have. So my friends had to watch the movie without CC and try to read the actors lips. Which means they missed most of the movie. I signed as much as I could so they would not miss the entire movie. It was hard because I'm not 100% fluent in ASL & it was dark in the room. I WISH EVERYONE HAD EQUAL ACCESS TO EVERYTHING THEY WANT AND NEED.

I started using captions about a year ago and I've always had good luck with the Galaxy theater in Riverside, CA. They use the boxes and sometimes they are a little loose but usable and in overall good working condition from any seat. Occasionally if I go to a 10 or 11pm show, it's can be hard to get an employee that has access to them and knows anything about how they work, but once I'm seated I've never had a problem.

Absolutely true. We haven't gone to the movie theatre for a long time because we have a baby boy that isn't ready to encounter the Hollywood adventure yet. I personally like Captiview more than glasses because the weight of glasses was pretty heavily after several minutes. Here is my thoughts about that situation with theatre manager when you went There with Courtney's parents: a) I think he (manager) thought that you just wanted to make sure if captions were working on that device and not that holding thing; or b) he didn't even tested it and just waited some time to call you back and lied that it worked. Btw, I am hearing and these thoughts is only my opinion, since I can;t relate to Zack's situation. Also, I apologise if there are some spelling and/or grammar mistakes. Love you both so much!

Very nice story. I understand Zach very good what it feels like if that not working. I had same experience like Zach. But in USA is really good now because they give it to all the deaf people the captions. And we don’t have here in my country. Just a few cinemas. Anyway I wanted to say and just my opinion, If you call them and say make sure that should be working, before Zach used. But the calling is sometimes not enough to change it. I would suggest first to go to cinema and talking them. Just if the cinema is not too far away from your home. Maybe this could be more working then calling them. :) But still a wonderful story 💙 and you guys are great. I love Zach and he is really good man. Courtney looks so pretty. Sorry Zach 😂

Whoa, I never thought going to the cinema as a deaf/hoh person in the US would involve so much technology, I thought you can just let them know so that they can activate the CC. I guess at least when it comes to the cinema, deaf/hoh people from non English-speaking countries have it easier than you guys-we always have CC, lol, since almost all movies at the cinema are in English or another foreign language. But then accessibility in general here, compared to the US is very bad...and not just with the deaf community but all kinds of accessibility issues. I always wanted to learn sign language but when I went to look about how to do it I found out the only way is to become an interpreter. Meaning paying for the course, moving to a city where they hold these courses, and having a college degree just to be allowed to take the course (which is understandable maybe since you'd become an interpreter although still weird and unfair to require that you already have to have a college degree). I'm just trying to point out how prohibitive it is to learn sign language here, when in the US I understand you can even take an introductory, respectively an intermediate course in high school if you want. You'd think they would want as many people as possible to learn the language for better communication, integration and accessibility, considering that here I understand there's only one interpreter for each ~700 deaf/hoh people.

Yeah that’s true! It’s honestly horrible, the limit of accessibility. Things need to improve.

@@OurSignedWorld But honestly, couldn't they just have CC on if someone requests it? It just seems so much easier for everyone, not to mention more economical for the movie theatres to not have those devices, respectively not having them malfunction. I can't imagine subtitles being _that_ distracting to other viewers, foreigners see movies with CC all the time. And I can't talk about other countries, but yeah, that's how it goes here. I'm from Romania.
@RecMan2010

The CC devices should always be in working order, and you guys should be able to sit anywhere in the theatre to get a signal. Sitting at the very front to watch a movie sucks!

Every time I call with SVR to make an appointment, they always say; "you will have to bring your own interpreter because we don't offer that here" *sigh* Sure, I'll just stop at the interpreter store on way over and pick one up. Does that ever happen to you? How do you handle it?
@OurSignedWorld
@OurSignedWorld 5 жыл бұрын
Wow yeah that happens a lot and its wrong and unfortunate. What I do is read them part of the ADA law and tell them they are required to provide an interpreter and if they don't, they would be breaking the law. If they still dont listen, I ask them to speak to someone else who would be able to help me. Remember to ask for each persons name and save that information for your records.

The ignorance and unwillingness to provide the same service for the disabled community that they do for the non disabled community enrages me. They would jump to fix a sound problem for the hearing movie goers if it were off so why do they not feel the same need to provide the ability for deaf viewers to enjoy the film? The film industry makes billions of dollars every year but most don't want to spend the money for captioning or descriptive video. It is so ignorant.
