Well done Jake! That's probably the most satisfying barrel of chaeto I have seen yet lol. I tried the hair algae scrubber route and after further research found that not only is it more efficient at pulling no3 and po4 but it is also more efficient at stripping your trace elements. I have since removed it and now concluded the chaeto is the best balance for nutrient export.

Good news: Yellowing from waterfall style algae scrubbers is from when you don't clean/harvest them soon enough; the underlying growth dies and turns yellow, and puts yellow into the water. Solution: clean/harvest more often, or get more light in the middle of the screen to create growth rings (which allows flow to get to the middle of the screen), or change to an bubble upflow style which does not have yellowing problems.

Thanks for the history and introduction. This is a project I have been considering and your insights are appreciated. Two questions: 1. Where did you get your micro-algae, and was it a certain species? 2. Do you ever fear the spread of disease or parasites with linked tanks? (I was considering this too, but fear contamination.) As always, thanks for helping all of us in the community, jim

Good timing, I just tore out my refugium today.. first I am going to start featuring macro algae in my display, I have some purple fauchia that I love .. However I was doing some window shopping for algae scrubbers. Not sure I’m sold on any of them .. so for now it’ll be a filter sock in an empty refugium..

Regarding macro algae in scrubbers. I and a few more here in the UK have been growing Ulva intestinalis in.our waterfall ATSs. So you can indeed grow macro algae in a waterfall algae turf scrubber as well as or instead of GHA. BTW. I use no prefiltration what so ever unless you call a skimmer prefiltration which technically it is.

Cool! Glad to know this works because I had just started setting something up a very similar rolling system. PVC fed by my pumps with lots of holes in them pointing to make the chaeto roll. I am setting up my refungium divided into a maze so that it creates a longer path. The chaeto gets the first length where the pumps feed in so they cause the rotation.

Quick question! Can a refugium become a bad addition to a reef tank? My main question is, I can't seem to get my chaeto to tumble unless i were to add a pump.. Does chaeto become a detritus trap over time? My detritus seems to settle at the bottom of the tank, although these is sponge growing on my chaeto, and the tips closest to the light source are going red
@ReefBuildersVideo3 жыл бұрын
Yes I am vehemently opposed to typical refugium setups for being a detritus trap and a breeding ground for parasites, and overall a distraction to the main display that we look at everyday

Did he say if the lights are on for a certain amount of hours? I know some people say it’s ok to run 24\7 but thought the algae might need a dark period to allow for proper photosynthesis. Do others run fuge light opposite of tank lights?
@ReefBuildersVideo3 жыл бұрын
I used to be a big proponent of RDP - reverse daylight photosynthesis - but I find that the pH can be maintained much higher by simply having the algae illuminated 24/7. I find my Chaeto completely outgrows any kind of nuisance algaes when I light it up day & night

Is the Spinning Algae Scrubber still running at the Reef Builders Studio?
@HobbySci3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jake, you talk about the algae sucking up trace elements. In my time of running macro algae I found it hard to control the rate at which these traces were absorbed with the ever changing size of the algae. How do you deal with trace element replenishment, in a nonlinear system such as this one? Frequent WC or frequent ICP tests?
@ReefBuildersVideo3 жыл бұрын
I USED to try and chase the trace elements, and the numbers, but man now I mostly feed a variety of foods, calcium reactor, & AcroPower. Anytime I dosed traces, even minimally, ICP tests showed the numbers riding high.
