It's easy to poke holes/dismiss what we don't understand or just don't know enough about. Thank you for testing these units, I've personally seen phenomenal results in our club with extensive testing over the years by multiple people but excited to see BRS put it through some tests of their own. Makes perfect sense why the control is a no filter tank and avoid the confusion of other variables.

Works as a small water change .Ya just have to keep an eye on salinity . Next time your at the beach, Notice that your playing in skimmate from the ocean.🤪 Thanks BRS, Love your channel.

We could have hit this clearer but the point was I don’t think anyone believes a skimmer will remove nearly 100% of the organics and related nutrients. So we were testing against that mentality. In this case, the scrubber did remove basically all the nitrate and phosphate from the single cube addition and larger size scrubbers presumably will scale with that. Performance most reefers would agree is nearly impossible with a skimmer alone. The reason we didn't test against an actual skimmer is because that’s akin to testing the speed of “a car” Brand, size, tuning, maintenance and even type or track all dramatically effect performance. No matter what we used or how we used it would not give a very accurate depiction of performance on the average tank. That said in a separate test it might be fun to set up a few different skimmers and test what percentage of the organics they remove. It won’t tell us anything definitive but it will crack the door open and provide a window into potential performance.

@@BRStv then why didn't you test it? I mean why make the title Scrubber vs Skimmer then not put the scrubber up against the skimmer? Is there anyone who would set up a tank without ANY form of filtration? Also if you hit the ceiling of the scrubber at 2 cubes what is the ceiling of the skimmer? @@BRStv Sorry but this is an incomplete controlled experiment. There is no protein skimmer to compare the results to. This is akin to a clickbait add. This merely looks like an advertisement for algae scrubbers compared to no filtration at all which given the title, is misleading at the very least.

Just compare or add this result to what you get with your skimmer alone. There is your answer and thanks to BRS you didn't have to go buy a scrubber of your own to figure it out.

I’ve ran this exact test for over a year with an algae turf scrubber and later a refugium full of chaeto. I had MASSIVE nuisance algae issues in the display as a result, which was resolved by peroxide soaking my rocks and switching to a skimmer + modest carbon dosing & phosguard instead. This was a predominately zoa tank and they were starting to look really unhealthy because you really can’t turn algae-based filtration “off” without causing more problems. I ended up moving them to my frag system which uses just a skimmer and sand for filtration. It’s my “lazy tank”. They’ve since rebounded of course. I also changed the display to sps corals and from day one, they’ve had great color and polyp extension. Don’t fear nitrate levels over 5ppm and keep Po4 low.

Well at least you were willing to test a ATS. I’m sure not many companies out there want to hear the words algae scrubber. One product that can replace all the media’s and gadgets. In a reef tank you won’t need a skimmer. Or you’ll be dosing nitrate and phosphate. Fish only maybe use a skimmer.

Can an algae scrubber outperform a protein skimmer... I still don't know, I didn't see a protein skimmer in the results anywhere. One interesting bit about the data though, specifically the 2 cube a day data. Is going from weeks 4 to 6 it looks like the phophates increase MORE on the tanks with the algae scrubber from about 0.1 to 0.25 (or so) for the first tank versus .85 to .9 for the control, and more drastically with the second set of data from just under 0.1 to 0.23(ish) where as the control didn't seem to move at all. Making me think there's some sort of time delay before phophates get released into the tank, perhaps the food takes longer to decompose? Either way really wish there was a skimmer on the control tanks, or 2 other tanks, just so we can see what goes down with them. Bottom line is yeah a skimmer is going to complete remove but they work "better" when the water is dirtier so at lower levels a skimmer isn't going to quite be as effective but as the water gets dirtier they're going to increase in their effectiveness.

I wish I could post pictures! how do I send you guys pictures! I want some feedback because I think I did this so stellar in terms of minimalism.

For the next stage, the rocks will absorb phosphate for a while, so the tests and the controls will not be too different when it comes to algae on the rocks. But if you keep them running for 6+ months, the rocks will fill with phosphate on the non-scrubber tanks sooner, and thus will start nuisance algae on the rocks faster, than the scrubbed tanks.

there's already a difference in phosphate levels, why would they suddenly equalize for the next stage?

@@punchyscyllarus565 Because with new rock, phosphate is going into the rock like a sponge. After the rock is "full", it can't absorb any more, so levels in the water column increase, and nuisance algae on the rock begins.

There are a lot of variables here that were not addressed. How many hours per day were the scrubbers ran? Also I think scrapping the scrubber once a week is excessive and is probably hurting the performance of the scrubber. I tend to scrape mine every couple weeks and only do one side not both. The more algae you can grow at once the more nutrients you will export. Still excited for this series though. Also I have not needed to scrubbed my glass in the 6months I have been using my scrubber aside from scrapping off snail eggs and coralline. One bi-product of a scrubber is my snail population has dwindled :(.

The reason for the drastic increase on the addition of the second cube was the lack of nitrates. GHA is more temperamental to the redfield ratio than other macros. Due to the lack of nitrates in the system, the algae wasn’t consuming the PO4 correctly. If they redo the test and keep the nitrates within the redfield ratio to PO4 you will not see the increase like these tests.

IVE BEEN REEK KEEPING SINCE 1969 ,I haven't seen a protein skimmer manurfacturer ever make a claim that the skimmer will reduce nitrates ,phosphorus or phosphate. However they will remove proteins and compounds that would eventually contribute to the nutrient load.Algae will consume phosphorus before it becomes phosphate and nitrates if it is large enough to out compete the reef tank lights. The best approach would be to use both and a UV light on the return side to reduce spores from returning to the display tank.

I used to use a large size algae scrubber - (DIY scrubber and after that purchased a ready made one). Didn't need the skimmer because parameters were excellent without it. I abandoned the scrubber it after about 4 years of use. We could not keep the green algae out of the display tank. I used to remove the live rock and toothbrush off the algae and used Hydrogen Peroxide. The tank would look great until about 4 months later, then the display tank would once again be overwhelmed with the stupid green hair algae. That darn algae was everywhere. I Moved the tank next to a wall that was well away from any windows. The green hair algae went away. Went back to using a skimmer, but now our parameters are a little on the high side once again. The algae scrubber really does keep your parameters excellent, but then the display tank gets completely overwhelmed with that green hair algae. I suppose this happens if you don't clean those scrubbers at least once a week. If you miss the weekly cleaning, then wammo, you get the algae in the display. Who in the world is going to be that consistent over years and years?

I feel the test was not accurate even without wanting the skimmer compared. The scrubbers at 1 cube a day we’re losing the fight of exporting nutrients and it was gonna get worse. It’s obvious running a scrubber vs no scrubber would be better but you have to show the draw back of the eventual climb of nutrients unless you go overkill on their sizes. Seemed like a waste of a test to just advertise your scrubbers.

Marine Biologist here, While this test does show that Algae scrubbers outperform a tank with no filtration, that doesn't give us any data in relation to the misleading title that implies you have a test between the two, we already know that Algae removes phosphate and processes nitrates into cell growth, what we really should have seen is a control of 3 tanks of the same capacity, 1 with no filter, 1 with algae and 1 with a protein skimmer, then interpolated the averages between the algae versus the protein skimmer based on the class of their rated water capacity. E.G a 100 gal scrubber versus 100 gal filter versus 100 gal of a tank with nothing but filter media in the form of sand/substrate and rock. lastly, you should have had a 4th tank that combines all 3 , Biologicial, Mineral, and mechanical filtration and compared its results with the averages of the previous 3 to see whether or not the data matches in correlation. I know this video is a year old so it's a bit out of place for me to crash with hindsight, but I think this would be an awesome new video idea to improve upon your results. I would point out however (as we use both in our labs) that an Entry level protein skimmer (even a china copy) is only around 100-150USD if you aren't fussed on brand, whilst the entry point for the lowest Algae scrubber : CW-50 External Algae Scrubber (60-100 Gallons) is around the 400 USD price point, so with that in mind it would be worth seeing if a scrubber outperforms a protein skimmer as its 3x more expensive to step into - and ultimately if it doesn't, how much extra you're paying for how much less/more filtration.

@@Hellahard As someone running the scrubber (CW-50) it's not nearly as clear cut as this video makes it out to be. There's a whole host of questions we aren't mentioning. The removal of trace elements at different rates and different values for each tank is the biggest. Scrubbers can pull nutrients out beyond nitrates and phosphates, and if you aren't ICP testing, it can cause a "phantom crash". They are also problematic to get dialed in and frequently clog. They are an expensive box that is not a plug and play solution. I'm going to sell mine after a year due to it being problematic and not knowing what it's actually removing. It went from bottoming out my nitrates to now not even moving the needle on any parameters I frequently test for. They are currently trying to test the harvested algae for exactly what is in it so you can have a clearer idea of what is going on. Will they keep algae out of the display? Maybe? Is it better algae control than good rock and coral coverage? Probably not. Skimmer are great for gas exchange and serve a purpose. Scrubbers seem to be a misunderstood component.

We're not completely sure, but it's possible that if the test was continued, we might have seen an exponential trend. The other factor is that for the phosphate portion of the test, we're using hobby grade test kits, so there could be some margin for error there too.

I think that is where the growth got too thick and shaded/killed the roots. This is where growth rings would have helped.

I look forward to the next results, but you always screw up the experiment... PLEASE FEED THE CUBE RIGHT BEFORE LIGHTS OUT in the display. See if the scrubber can remove all the nutrients before the display comes on the next day eliminating most of the algae growth in the display. If you feed right when the lights come on both lights will be competing for the growth. If your main feed is 30 minutes or less before lights out I think you'll see how effective a Fuge or Scrubber can be vs. the display.

I'm a big believer in the Refuguim... Skimmers are problematic 90's reefing technology. The Fuge only system is the filtration method of the future. ;-)

Where is the follow up video regarding algae and round of testing using no filtration vs skimmers? Or even ATS vs CR would be helpful. Seems like this kinda fell short. I mean, anything vs no filtration at all is going to do better, so it's not really informing of us of anything. I've seen your "we could have hit this clearer..." reply to everyone else, and am a bit disappointed by it as well. Again... unless it's comparing to another form of nutrient export, there is little value. No one with any experience would guess that an ATS or skimmer or CR or fuge would perform the same or worse than no filtration. This has the making of a great series, but kind of off to a rough start here. Thank you for doing these videos. I know they are time and cost intensive, and I am sure I speak for every one when I say, we really appreciate it. =)

I'd like to see a video testing SPS growth at different temperatures. Say, 76 degrees vs 80 or 81 degrees. Kind of like how you tested higher alk/calc and growth rates.

Great experiment, ready for part two..."where is it?" Next time run one tank with a sized skimmer so we can all see the results. Very misleading headline. Even if the skimmer performed evenly, the scrubber would win considering anyone can install a DIY scrubber off the sump overflow saving electricity cost$...

I would have liked to seen results of other elements and trace elements. I have been told that over time an algae scrubber will destroy a tank because it uses up iron and gets the parameters out of whack. Also would have liked to see all of those results plus the one's I just stated against a protein skimmer. For instance a control with no filtration, a tank with only a skimmer, a tank with only a scrubber, and a tank with both then test all of those parameters.

Now if I was a suspicious person I would think you abandon the test v a skimmer as not to upset all the skimmer manufacturers and reduced sales in them. Algae scrubbers seem a dirty word in the aquarium retail world.

@@BRStv Yes sizing is important, and that was the reason for "cubes per day", since the number of gallons has no effect on the amount of nutrients.

I do not think this is a reasonable test, as you did not directly compare skimmers and scrubbers side by side, and I would not consider four weeks to be long enough to text anything. I would like to see the test done over and for a year or more, that's a test, besides, we want to see long term results as we are wanting a long term solution or system that can help keep time our pets health, yes I said pets, you may not be able to pet a clam, but loosing mine sucked.
