Watched this movie when i was 7 years old. This scene scarred me for life. It is so well acted and emotional and also as a child i couldn't understand the reason a mother would abandon her child like this, even if he was a robot. My little heart broke.

Abandoning David was the most heartbreaking scene for me. A.i. or not, he expresses real emotions and real feelings...just as any normal human child 😢

I wonder if this is how dogs feel when they're abandoned?

This movie is so sad. The way he sets up the picnic blanket preparing for a nice day with his mom whilst we know she’s about to abandon him is heart wrenching

It’s so rare that a child actor has the ability to carry a movie but he did it in two great films. This and The Six Sense. And he was also the young Forest in Forest Gump. All he wanted was to be with his mother. The ending is made me cry.

I remember my mom whispered "this bitch.." when we saw this scene at the movies years ago. I could imagine that alot of other moms felt the same way while watching this scene.

This scene is SO MUCH HARDER to watch now that I am a mother. There is no way I could ever do this, real or AI.

She is not a horrible person. She just wanted to save him from destruction. But I think she should have stood up against her husband and said: "No, he will stay with us."

It's not often in film that the child's acting outshines the adult's, but Haley Joel Osment absolutely nails this scene.

It's heartbreaking she did the actual abandoning but no one seems to mention the dad was the one who wanted her to get rid of him. It's sad the mom had to do it because she really loved him. You can see the pain in her face, especially when he starts saying I can be so real for you.

She did love him. A lot But she didn't want them destroying him David was just too peaceful to understand that

I just finished watching this movie, and the ending made me IN TEARS. The first time I cried this hard for a movie. The ending is beautifully sad. I don’t know what to feel. Am I happy for David? Yes. Am I sad for David? Yes. This movie is so emotionally traumatizing. 😭

Who all cried after watching this movie?

Throughout the first part of the movie, David is often seen slavishly following the code that was burned into his memory when he was first built. It contains a basic set of instructions to start him off, so that he can learn about his surroundings. Every time he breaks away from the code, it gets him into trouble, so he reverts to following his coding more closely. One day, he consults his basic code to try and figure out what to do if he's being abandoned. It gives no response. He has not only lost his adopted mother, but he now he has no internal guidance system to help him. He is now completely alone! :'(

This is one of the darkest movies I've ever seen. Though the ending TWO THOUSAND YEARS LATER is happy.

I remember going to see this at the movies with my family when this came out and after this scene, me and my younger sister were just BAWLING... the idea of a mother abandoning her kid in the woods just scared the crap out of me.

i remember being a kid and couldn't sleep well for days because of this movie, it was so hard for my little self to comprehend why things happened in this movie, i found it depressing and up until now i still do

This movie made me cry a lot. It was very eye opening to me for my waking life. I personally feel like humans were almost fated and designed to suffer with having such strong desires that is not rational or logical to achieve sometimes and this is why we suffer whether it’s a relationship we want with someone who doesn’t love us in return, or the dream job that for some reason keeps rejecting us. Most of us, like this robot kid cannot accept the rejection of our desires so we suffer by not seeing the things around us that we should appreciate in life. If you watch the whole movie he had many characters who truly cared for him and never abandoned him but he just didn’t realize it because he refused to accept that this mother abandoned him! This made me rethink my life and even though it’s not very satisfying at the moment, I try to think more positively and enjoy what I do have as I know everything doesn’t last so every minute of it should be cherished! In the end of the movie he had to wait 2,000 years to pass to finally experience what he was longing for but it only lasted a day! Not worth it in my opinion and this is something I need to take into consideration when pursuing what I desire in my own life!

I watched this film again recently. This scene and the scene where he is staring at the blue fairy begging to be made a real boy just breaks my heart. Can’t help but cry at how cruel it would be to abandon a child like that, especially one so devoted to loving you and being a good son.

This is where my trauma of being left by my own mom developed in me. At times I got envy when I get the feelings my mom shows more care for my brother than me.

This scene happens because Martin is the one to start the nonsense, telling David to cut a lock of his mother's hair while she sleep, then Martin's friends at the pool who scared and stung David's synthetic skin, David was protecting behind Martin is unwittingly pushing Martin to the bottom of the pool with him, without all his gratuitous nastiness from human children David could have lived happily with Monica, even though he is an AI child in the movie he is portrayed as a pure and loving person. I hate it when kids pick on nice kids and manipulate them.

I remembered this movie after quite a few years. I was a kid and didn't really understand the content. But, now that I've seen the movie with fresh eyes I must say it is so underrated. I mean how painful must it have been for those two characters. Great movie, great story I wish more movies like this were popular today.

Spielbergs most underrated film. It just stirs up such great emotion that his early films are so well at perfecting. I always found it rather nightmarish that settles into this seasick lullaby of an ending. Its totally moving though

The story of this movie is humans trying to create an ideal being that can love. And in an ironic twist, the being they create is too good at loving and too perfect that he has a programmed unconditional love that he can't violate, and humans being the selfish backstabbers they are can't keep their end of bargain.

So many heartbreaking and memorable scenes in this movie. 18 years since I’ve first seen it and I’m still fascinated by it. Brings me so many feelings and emotions.

I think that Monica (the mother) was being very selfish. She didn't ever care about David... She cared about herself, her own feelings. Of course no one would ever think an item could love back so she treated him like a toy to give her love. She only made David hers to fulfill her own personal needs. This scene was very heartbreaking because even though he's a robot, he has human emotions.

Favorite movie of all time.

A movie that was good, even great when first watching. Now years later, I remember how powerful of a scene this was. From the actors and acting to the music score of John Williams, "Abandoned in the Woods" is still one of my favorite scores by him. Up there with tracks from Jaws and Jurassic Park. Frances O'Connor was so breathtaking from the early 2000's too. She's just one name of hundreds that should be admired. If you love her, watch her in the independent film Book of Love, you won't be disappointed. :)

in this sequence I felt all the sorrow of all abandoned kids in this world and belive me I felt a sharp pain in my chest,I was in the edge to start cryin even I'm 47 years old....actually thats the greatest value of Speelberg-in all his films he touched the deepest parts of our souls, the parts that will belong forever to the child in us...

This was the saddest part of the movie. When things are going great for him, but then the parents had their real son back. Then david gets picked on, ridicule not just by the kids at the pool party. David was trying so hard to get Monica & Henry to accept him not as a machine...but as a real person. But they both knew that once david was imprinted. He cannot be reprogramed again & he would be destroyed at the factory. Technically they did saved him from that. Sure it was tough for her to abandon him when she did, a part of her did love him. If were a sequel back then, it would take place a few yrs after his insane journey of the ways of the world. He either made or someone built him a new body..a grown up body. Then he had his A.I. core install into it. So it would be simple and easy for him to blend in, be among people & hide. He finds work as a laborer trying to keep a low profile, severe all links of his past. Still blames Monica for abandoning him in the woods. Knowing that Pro. Hobby is still be looking for him, to them david is a unique A.I. that must be recovered intact. As 11 yrs. pasts by, David continues working as a welder at a constructing sight. But then one day while on a break, he sees Martin all grown up. That Martin will be needing David help when he tells him. That Hobby associates have his parents & holding them against their will. At first david refuse to help him, cause he still carries to anger towards them. Then suddenly a team of soldiers, that have been sent to capture David. On which would it lead to a fight to save them. He change his mind, he helps Martin to rescue his parents. As they make their way to rescue Monica & Henry. David sees what is still happening to the obsolete robotics like he remembers at "The Flesh Fair" that are still being replaced by more advanced designs & being destroyed. He'll see Monica again, she be shocked to see him too after all the years. Eventually he'll forgive her for what happened in the past. He later sees of what would happen that the future of the planet will be facing an extinction if things don't change from the way it is. David helps by showing the ppl that Androids & Humanity can coexist in peace. But it's just an what if movie idea.

I agree with you actually. I think David is being put through unbearable emotional torture by being left there, knowing his mother has left him alone, and will not come back for him. I understand it'd be hard for her to drive him to a place where they destroy him. But if they had done it a way where he wouldn't have even known they destroyed him, I feel like that's more humane. Even though of course it's not very nice, and I think that kid Martin and his friends are extremely stupid

Is this the actual scene from the film? Something seems different. I was surprised this film didn't garner more attention. It had some fine performances, and the picture Speilberg painted of the future was stunning. I doubt it will ever be thought of as a classic, but it is one of the most under-rated films I've ever seen.
