He’s grotesquely overrated, was never the best player in the league and never led the league in anything. @@chauvintookaknee4blm268 no…thats why Duncan was so high. Duncan’s claim to fame is analytical prowess, thats it, in reality he was never dominant and was never the best player in the NBA. The Spurs organization just drafted exceptionally well, especially in regard to defense which elevated the perceived effectiveness of Duncan as a defender. To suggest that Tim Duncan is better than Magic Johnson or Lebron James is beyond bizarre let alone him being better than Kobe (who’s better than all of them).

Tim Duncan had the career, stats and accolades to deserve that spot. Dude did it all. 5 time Champion (could have been 6 if Popovich didn’t take him out of the game with 30 seconds to go for 3 point defensive assignments; which led to the Ray Allen play). Rookie of the year, multiple league MVP awards, finals MVP’s, All defensive teams, and the one team he played for his entire career won at least 50 games a season for basically his entire career. In the lockout shortened ‘99 season they didn’t win 50 games (the league barely had 50 games that year) but Duncan did win his first NBA Championship that season. In the 2011 lockout season, the Spurs did win 50 games. The dude was a winner and the team never really had a down year his whole time there. I’ll never forget this playoff 3 pointer he hit at the end of the game when no one was guarding him. He looks around like: “you know I’m Tim Duncan, right? You guys oughta put a defender on me!” He then hits the shot that forces OT.

Short answer: yes. He wasn't flashy, he was basically allergic to the press, he was dedicated, sound, unflappable, and technically precise. More than anything he was a phenomenal winner and arguably the best defensive player of his era in addition to being an exceptional offensive threat--he just wasn't flashy. Duncan absolutely deserves to be included in the highest tier of NBA greats.

100% agreed. Timmy was about winning, from the second he stepped on to the NBA he was a championship caliber player, and the Spurs were contenders until the day he retired. The 2003 championship is probably the biggest carry job in the history of the NBA and Duncan had a winning record against everyone in the NBA, but since Timmy was a quiet guy from a small market team, he is absurdly underestimated.

@@justsayin669Greatest personality and intensity? Sure. Greater peak solo abilities? Totally agree. Game changer? Absolutely. But the ability to elevate everyone on the court for a title? Timmy’s the clear winner, and the championships show it. KG has one title and he joined the former-greatest-3-shooter Ray Allen and the great Paul Pierce. So there’s Timmy at clear #1, KG @ clear #2, and then we can argue people after that.
@justsayin669
@justsayin669 11 ай бұрын
@@MadChickenz42 I'm speaking in terms of overall effectiveness which includes impact toward winning. KG was in Minnesota for 12yrs dealing with a worse situation than any other superstar has ever dealt with for that long which is a huge part of the reason why he has so many less rings than Duncan. Duncan had much better team support than KG did overall throughout their careers. KG only had 1 healthy prime year with Pierce, Allen and Rondo in Boston and they won 66 games and the title that year. The next year in 2009 KG had probably his best chance at winning a ring (probably even better than his chance that he took full advantage of in 2008) stripped from him when he injured his knee late in the season which required surgery and, along with age, forced him out of his prime. Pierce and Allen also began to age past their prime after that yet the Celtics still returned to the Finals and came within a game of winning a 2nd title in 2010 and stayed in championship contention in 2011 and 2012 before breaking up in their old age. Even during his time in Minnesota he did a great job just to lead those teams to 8 playoff appearances including four 50+ win seasons and 1 WCF appearance in 12yrs, that's just how bad his team support was during that time. In 2002-03 and 2003-04 KG performed 2 of the very best carry jobs in NBA history. If KG had Duncan's level of team support throughout his career then he would have had a very similar level of team success if not slightly more. I would give the edge to Duncan as well, but it's very close.

They don’t tell you how many times a player had the winning play, they don’t tell you the amount of times a guy did something that can’t be measured. His presence in a certain part of the field, court or rink made space for guys on the other side.

He's definitely not #2... Personally I'd put him at #6... He had career longevity. Could play PF & C interchangeably. Was a talented defender who deserved at least one DPOY. Excellent Rebounder. Deceptively strong. Underrated as a passer. And an amazing teammate who could fit within any system. He practically defines what it means to have max efficiency on the court as a big man. If he had just a little better athleticism with a better free throw %. Then I'd say he's in the GOAT discussion.
