Ayub Nuri - Rudaw
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia on May 18, 1991. It had been part of Somalia for 31 years and after decades of suffering and massacre at the hands of the central government of Somalia, says the foreign minister, they decided they had enough and embarked on a struggle for independence.
The Republic of Somaliland is not formally recognized by the United Nations or any country in the world, though they maintain good relations with a number of countries, especially neighboring Ethiopia, Djibouti and the United Arab Emirates.
Unlike Somalia, Somaliland is peaceful and stable and a functioning government is in charge. The country has an elected parliament and president.
The economy of this Muslim country's economy largely relies on its millions of livestock, but they are vulnerable to drought. In the past year alone millions of sheep and goat have died from the drought and their owners forced to move from the countryside to the bigger cities.
Some foreign aid agencies have stepped in to help, but the Somaliland government wants to help the country and for that it needs international recognition which will enable them to sign trade deals, borrow money and engage in diplomacy on a global scale.

that is because we had a brutal dictator in power. who dealt with anyone in his way. by murder, if you were isaaq. by deportation if you were darod and by prision if you were hawiye. but we don't have that man in power anymore and we must never give up our dream of a united greater Somalia. the past is in the past. every Somali has had injustices done to them by other Somalis. what we need to do is forgive but never forgot. because those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. with unity comes power, remember that.
@mustafaahmed2017

Because there was too much injustice done and no one has ever talked about. We, somalilandrs , don't hate any somali people or southern people, but we see that there too manu egos there, we believe that many of them are angry with our progress and wish us bad things. When your brother doesn't want you to succeed then your brotherhood tie gets broken and that's the reosan that people won't trust any time soon.

I appreciate the fact that somaliland has had a dark past regarding Somalia but nevertheless I won't take responsibility for what a past president has done I completely do not agree with what he had done, it's completely horrifying to have done that to our own people, children, mothers and our soldiers. Such a hard past that we are facing the consequences for now. It truly upsets me that we will probably never be one nation again. And lastly I will definitely not be looked down on by an Ethiopian if you are, that not so long ago would've loved to destroy both somali and somaliland.

Somalilander Somalilander -your acting like the people of the south were in charge for the whole of that period. you think siad barre held an election to see if the southerners wanted him to bomb their brothers in the north? or do you think he accepted petitions? he was a dictator who killed anyone in his way. we didn't have a say. we were as much oppressed as you. the northerners were the best amongst us at that time since they were the main opposition to that dictator. and for that, i applaud you as my family, as my fellow Somali brothers. personally, I hate siad barre but you got to open your eyes and see that dividing us further is continuing the oppression of siad barre in his absence. unity is strength. division is weakness. please, be reasonable, not emotional.

Excellent report brother Ayub Nuri thanks for the honest report, that's the Somaliland i know and more. Many western and even Somali journalists failed to give accurate, in depth reports of Republic of Somaliland. Whether by been biased, falsely reporting by not differentiating Somaliland and Somalia, lack of understanding the socio-political situation of S/land or in deficiencies of journalists many have miserly failed to produce an accurate, unbiased, in depth report many to our (somalilander's) frustration. Thank you for the wonderful accurate report. I hope other journalist use this as an educational and stepping stone.

@@The-Heart-Will-Testify Many countries before the U.K had made alliances and come together, even in the ancient era. btw by the looks of things in U.K, it seems Scotland is trying to beeak away after all the SNP(Scottish Nationalist Party) has gained majority of votes, and the person currently in charge of Scotlnad has been trying to gain permission to have a referndum to break away which they're being denoed acsess to. Not to mention that Scotland wanted to stay in E.U unlike England, and Wales. If the U.K doesn't give Scotland independence they would face a similar situattion to the troubles. The only way Scotland wouldn't secede would be if Brexit turns out be benefictial to the U.K as a whole which depends wholly on the U.K 's to function without being in a huge trading bloc. Brexit may either leave U.K in ruins or Destroy it.

Thanks to Rudaw TV which is a symbol of free speech based in Iraqi Kurdistan for visiting Somaliland which is still not recognized by the international community despite having been a democraticaly functioning de-facto state since 1991. Both Kurdistan and Somaliland share many things, two entities that have suffered massacres and oppression under the guise of staying in a futiled unity at the hands of useles governments in Mogadishu and Baghdhad.

A developed Somaliland with a strong Police and Military is a positive impact for the horn of Africa. No need for super expensive sophisticated weapons! Kurds are welcome to visit. Somalilanders ask for their Re-Recognition from the world. We all know if Somaliland is re-recognised then the WHOLE of horn of africa will be stable (including southern somalia in the long term) because we will import neighbouring countries Goods through our big Ports(without politics like it happens with others), be a role model in rule of law and democracy in the region but for some reason the UN and Others are interested in giving billions every year to the hopeless corrupt southern somalia.

I am extremely proud of all those staff Somaliland achieved starting from scratch to a way forward of development. I am from Somaliland where I was born, raised and studied and still around having a family of two. The new history of Somaliland started in 1991 with proper leadership, elders and society that was not not self-centered but prioritizes common good first. Unfortunately however, Somaliland is deteriorating recently after tribe minded leaders got the lead and misled the process from wholly owned somaliland to clannish based somaliland that might harm and destroy somaliland soon if the same leadership remains. I hope the leadership of president Egal and his team shall one day come back and revive our future. Ilyas from Borama, Somaliland.
