In this episode, Mike and David discuss the new Mission 700 speaker. Although they still look young and handsome, the guys are actually old enough to remember the original - and are intrigued by how this reimagined version sounds!
They both end up agreeing that this is a serious new speaker - but can't help yearning for its considerably more expensive 770 big brother, which is even more special.
Each episode of Hi-Fi Riff features Mike and David's unedited, unexpurgated views about all manner of weird and wonderful hi-fi designs.
Business executive Mike has a wealth of knowledge from previous hi-fi retail experience, and David has written about hi-fi for thirty years. Now Editor-in-Chief of StereoNET, he's picked up a few things along the way.
So relax and enjoy some one-take hi-fi riffing - and please leave your comments below. And don’t forget to hit the Subscribe button, this one goes up to eleven!
The eighties-tastic title tune is called ‘UFO/Mike’s Jumper’, and used with the express permission of our old pal and rights holder Simon Lythe.

I’ve been loving my 700s! Had them just over a month paired with my Luxman R115. Great sounding speakers with the awesome retro look

I had the original 700's on the end of my first budget system. The record deck was a Sansui SR222 II with an Ortofon FF15E cartridge. The amp was a Trio KA3700. A nice upgrade from my crappy old Philips music centre.

I remember them well. Had a pair with a Dual CS505 MK2 & a NAD320 back in the early 80’s.

A classic setup, just like the video at 3:12. I got the one budget Japanese turntable that the hi-Fi magazines decided actually sounded good (Sansui SR-222?), then upgraded to a Rega Planar 3 while the 3020 struggled to power Magneplanar speakers. I sold the NAD a few years ago for decent money.

In 1995 I built a new house & needed front speakers for the HT. Luckily, a local furniture store had refurbished Mission speakers, I choose the 762i's (also with inverted drivers) & have never felt the need to replace them. The inverted drivers biases the radiation pattern towards a typical listening position. You also mentioned the Dual CS505 turntable. I pulled mine out of storage a couple of years ago, replaced the cartridge & polished the scratched cover. It now looks & plays like new! You should rename your channel to "Hi-Fi Nostalgia Riff".

Cheers guys. I'm afraid we will disagree on aesthetics, I'm just not up for speakers that look like they are as old as I am anymore :) I never really got on with their predecessors back in the day and much preferred my MF MC4's instead at about the same size on some heybrook stands. For less money than these you could get the wharfdale Evo 4 floorstanders which, in my opinion, would destroy these in a listening test! I also very much like the Ae500's you mentioned if you need stand mounts. However, I always enjoy listening to you guys even if I don't rate the item you are reviewing.. Thanks for all the posts :)

I’ve heard both and the new 700 was the better speaker imo. They are a fun speaker, but it depends on your use case, room, and aesthetic preference I think. Pairing mine with a Yamaha A-S2100 and I’m very pleased with them.

@@MrGeorgeMunroe Thanks for your perspective, always nice to hear from owners of the product. I cannot say that I've heard the 700's, but I have read several reviews from people I trust including this great riff, and their combination of attributes does not appear to be what I value or particularly matched to my systems attributes (Naim NAP 250DR power, Auralic Altair g1). However, im willing to bet they are great fun in the right system, and you appear to have found a synergy that works for you, congrats! Viva la difference! 😁

Loving the reviews of classics. A review of the Nait 3 would a great...it's possibbly the most Marmite Salisbury box. I notice David likes it...be good to know why, and how it compares with 1 and 2 early era, then modern era. I picked one up, and driving Ruark Templar's it's spot on, but get's hard if pushed loud.

We need to find a Nait 3 so we can do a Riff on it! I remember reviewing it circa 1994 for Hi-Fi World and having it on long term loan. A very nice amp, better than the 1 and 2 in my view. Old school Julian Vereker sound without the weak points of the earlier ones. But still quite tweaky in the great scheme of things and it needs efficient speakers.

I'd send you mine, but I'm too far away. I definitely prefer it to 1/2. It's knocked my Onix OA20/2 (which I love) off it's perch.

Yes, back in 1980/81 my first hifi was exactly what you describe - Dual 505+MP11, NAD3020 and Mission 700. All since traded in or given away. Great introduction to hifi. You say the new versions are like the originals then its a pity I sold them on - they cost £100 in 1980 as opposed to - what, £1400 for the new versions?
@MrVinylista
@MrVinylista Жыл бұрын
I think the new ones are considerably better, but still have that certain 'attitude' of the originals. £100 in 1980 is £400 now. So you're right, the new ones are much more expensive...

I had a pair of the originals but I thought it was the late 70’s. Very fast and exciting but you could get listening fatigue very quickly. Sold them on to a cousin but wished that I had kept them. I found out recently that he gave them away to a charity shop only a few weeks ago. Wish that he had told me, I would have gladly bought them back.

Good point. I'm getting a sense that IAG - or possibly PJC - are 'voicing' (if that's the correct term) products according to brand perceptions. To use M+D's car analogies it's Peugeot or Alfa Romeo, Škoda or Cupra, or - one for the younger listeners - Wolseley or MG.
@MrVinylista
@MrVinylista Жыл бұрын
@@robertleitch2016 Absolutely correct. IAG's Peter Comeau is one of the most gifted speaker designers operating today and has huge experience. He's deliberately cooking up different 'flavours' of speakers according to the brand's tradition.

Great point, Nige. I'd say the Lintons are better all rounders - stronger, more refined and more three dimensional.

Hi James - I haven't heard this exact combination, but knowing the CA amp I'd say it should work well. The CA is nicely smooth and has plenty of power, just right for the Missions. Be prepared for a fun-packed, bombastic, feisty presentation. It isn't the world's most accurate or analytical speaker.

Have you ever heard the KLH MODEL 5? I've did a side by side with the 700 and model 5 If you give the 700 a 8 out of 1 to 10. I give the model 5 a 9.5. The 700 is all midrange. No dynamics no top end Timbre is awful no detail no tone. They just don't sound good to me. Vocals are colored to be warm and fluffy. I sure hope the 770 is a huge improvement over the 700. Just my opinion of course. I'm using a Line Magnetic 805ia with 1200.00 in tube upgrades...Cheers 🥂
