Pretty slick. Always thought it would be cool to have a chair like that when out camping, rucking, etc,. Figured I'd just use some paracord and lash one to the outside of my ALICE pack, but this is SO MUCH BETTER. 😎👍

Genius! I have a medium ALICE and I want to try this now. I would also add a handle to the top of the pack by itself in the metal loops made to attach the shoulders straps, just so it’s easier to hang the bag when you’re using the chair :)

Every day, when I get brain fried from working, I pull up a couple of your hacks to brighten my day. This one is a peach! This weekend I'm going to grub around the closet to see if I still have an old Alice pack, but even if I don't, I'm going to get one of these chairs to put in the back of the Suburban -- I'm getting too old to sit on the ground . . . . I may not be able to get up . . . . so this looks like a cool solution. Even without the Alice, I betcha I have more than one pack I can strap this chair to with a couple gear straps (Don't you just LOVE Molle webbing?). Cheers! And keep 'em coming!

if your familiar wth the army field desk, those came with a small folding chair stool simsilar to that. One of those will sit neatly in the dead space between the frame and your back without the need of removing the pack from the frame. You'll need to rig a few renttion straps so it stay put and it's not as tall as that modification but it does just fine.

Pretty awesome. I really don't backpack anymore since I've gotten older and typically just take my big folding chair with arm rests and dual beer can holders while truck camping. I have had an old school alice pack since I got out of the Marines in the 80's. If I end up in bugout situation I might try to modify it. When I was a kid and used to go hunting and fishing with my grandad he made me a deer hide apron that he sewed the top over on and cut notches in it so it aligned with typical blue jeans belt loops. I could put that on my belt and wear it backwards so anywhere I wanted to sit on the ground it would keep my pants and butt dry and clean. Later I noticed that Les Stroud was doing something similar on his survival shows. I still had it until a couple of years ago even though I've been way too big for it since I was 16 and I gave it to my neighbor's kid who likes to go hunting and fishing with him. It still fits modern kids pants belt loops. When I was in the Marines and out on field exorcises I used to take the outer cardboard cover for C ration cases and later MRE cases and make a half assed chair out of them That outer case is open on opposite ends and made out of heavy duty cardboard. I would open it up and fold the long sides out ward in the middle to make a crease in the middle of the long sides, cut downward on each crease with my knife a couple inches then fold the carboard edges inward making four acute triangles for a seat. I could open it up a bit and throw a folded field jacket or any equivalent over it and have a comfy stool to sit on. Also if I needed to take a dump I could remove the field jacket, dig a hole, put the stool over it, sit on the folded cardboard triangles for comfort and take a nice sit down crap in the field. Way better than trying to squat anyway and they were strong enough to support my weight at the time which was around 190lbs. Fun stuff. I also like your version of an alcohol Arizona penny stove. Did you make that or is it store bought?
@WayPointSurvival

The simplicity is genius. Gotta love the tried and true Alice pack. Was way before my time however I'm impatiently waiting on an amazing quality lc2 large Alice in the mail. I just love external frame packs, the versatility of the Alice is really incredible. Some might see it as ancient tech in today's ultralight high speed gear world. But man it's been combat tested for decades it's still relatively cheap however from what I've read prices are going up and it's a bit harder to come by, in Canada anyways. Tactical tailors malice packs are so nice cost is up there though. Great video.

when I use to backpack I had a way of carrying my chairs. I had a neat system of strapping on the back and then loading up the supplies. it was called wifey. she carried the chairs ..ha ha great video. now that I am old...I just load them up in the back of the trailer and head off to the campground for the week. thats how I do my camping now...in a trailer....A campground that has flushable toilets for the wife and hot showers again for the wife....our trailer has all of those but she wont let me use them.. only at night..its rough getting old, but at I am still in the woods every so often...

I went to my army surplus store yesterday and they had one of those type foldable chairs. I used one of their ALICE packs and tested your system. It works very well as a frame/chair combo. I was planning on toting a compact camping chair anyways so using your system I can eliminate that extra 3 lbs. Thanks again.

Luckily for anyone willing to try this, the bags are far more common than the frames, which typically get scrapped, as they are 100% aluminum. I personally would use half a frame drilled into the original pack frame, if it were the correct width. The seat folds out, and the pack remains under the chair. I've already added some tubing to expand my pack frame, but this is definitely food for thought.

Very cool Mod. I have two Alice packs I modded with a plastic military frame (works better for ppl 5’8 and under) and a plastic frame off an old “firefly” backpack that works better for me. Changed out a couple buckles and added Molly Belt and Shoulder straps. If you get an Alice Pack that has the internal pouch to hold a radio-it’s perfect for a water pouch.

You sir… Have earned a subscription. UK based guy here. I’ll be checking out the rest of your videos. Genius idea. Excellent descriptions and overall video. Keep them coming please! Safe trails brother. If anyone knows where I can get a genuine medium Alice pack with frame etc please let me know. Struggling to get one in the UK. I would pay a pretty penny if it was legit.

I love vintage backpacks! They are less comfortable, but much more durable that modern ones. I suggest you a video about vintage backpack types. Here in Brazil, canvas side bags, like used by postmen, was often prefered to traditional backpacks, due its lower price and longer lifetime. I used one in the elementary school in 80's and have it still today - now used to my motorcycle rain dress.

@@WayPointSurvival , I forgot to mention: another reason for postman-style bags popularity is the greater safety against pickpocketing, specially in public transport at rush hours. It was also a hippie fashion in the 60's.

I can't believe that ruck is actually comfortable with the chair bar across your shoulders/ base of your neck.
@WayPointSurvival

It's actually ok as it simply goes in the place of the bar that goes across the original pack frame. Good question.

Great idea, I have a medium Alice pack and frame. Have you tried this chair on the medium pack? I would suspect that it would work. I have added a Molle system hip belt on my pack which gives me more padding and comfort. Thanks for sharing I will give it a try.

@@WayPointSurvival where I stay in N.C. the creeks and rivers are what I call “ black water” , being very silty. Is it possible to filter/purify to make it drinkable?
@WayPointSurvival
@WayPointSurvival 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you just need to pre-filter the water thoroughly. You can use a bandana or disposable coffee filters work quite well and they're lightweight. as long as there's no heavy metals in the water, from mining etc, the water should be fine then to either put through a standard water filter or boil for drinking.

I am curious about the weight comparison between the full ALICE pack in its original state vs. how much your new chair system weighs? I have been looking for a sturdy frame to replace the heavy original that is lightweight, so your answer would help me out a great deal. I can weigh the original here at my house. Do you mind taking the weight of your "chair pack" with no contents? Thanks!
@WayPointSurvival
@WayPointSurvival 4 жыл бұрын
The weight of the chair is 4 lbs, 7 oz, whereas the original Alice frame weighs 3.8 lbs. Sorry it took me a while to get back to you. Thank you for the question!
