My quest for a simple pack "load hauling" frame has taken me "Down the Rabbit Hole"! This time I'm going down the Rabbit Hole with A.L.I.C.E.!
My first venture to implement a load hauler, met with only 60% success with my modified Mystery Ranch Thor III pack. With that moderate failure, I decided to go "Old School" and pursue the A.L.I.C.E. pack frame I carried when I was a Cav Scout in the U.S. Army.
I was somewhat stymied at first due to high prices and availability of original U.S. Issue A.L.I.C.E. pack frames. As I often do, I put the thought on the back burner. In Early May, a Military Surplus Store opened two blocks from my home. The day the store opened for business, I walked in and saw a stack of A.L.I.C.E. packs with frames in the corner. I pains takenly sorted through all of them and when I was finished I had found a Medium and a Large "Ruck" both complete with with frames, pads and straps! They were never issued. with the exception of some storage debris (dust and spider webs), they were in NEW Condition. I wound up purchasing both "Ruck Sacks" for $70.00.
My original thought was to purchase A FRAME! However, nostalgia got the better of me and I couldn't bring myself to separate the packs from the frames. So, back to the Surplus Store I Went....
After seeing A.L.I.C.E., I went down "The Rabbit Hole" with her. As a result of many hours exploring on-line and many purchases from across the United States, I now have enough Packs, Frames, Accessories, and Replacement Parts to field no less than 7 pack systems based on the A.L.I.C.E. Pack Frame....... Yes, My A.L.I.C.E. Pack Mania Has Metamorphosised Into Absolute RUCKDICULOUSNESS!!!!
During this video, I am going to tell you the tale of my journey down A.L.I.C.E.s Rabbit Hole. I will also add the first installment of numerous videos in a series focused on my Ruckdiculous purchasing spree! The first installment will be a step by step instructional of converting the A.L.I.C.E. frame into a "LOAD HAULER"

Thank You Vince! I was very pleasantly surprised how many newly manufactured items are available for the ALICE packs and frames. Very few packs have that kind of longevity. From everything that I have seen, One could purchase everything to assemble a complete system new, without ever adding any surplus parts to it. FireForce Gear actually offers newly manufactured packs (Medium or Large) in Multicam, MARPAT or Woodland. Your choice of original ALICE Hardware or Updated Fastex/ MOLLE. I never would have thought this veteran pack system would have this long, viable life span. Vince, thank you very much for your subscription and comment! Have a fantastic day!

As a welder by trade and a veteran, I have been contemplating taking an Alice frame and remove the paint from all the riveted points and breakout a Tig welder and weld all the joints and never have to worry about rivers ever again. The tactical tailor frame and the TAG AGAF are bothe welded frames.

I used to have an old canvas Italian Mountain Rucksack. It ha one big main compartment and two smaller compartments each with an attached strap that was put through a buckle. It also had a chain on the inside and thick canvas shoulder straps with buckles for adjustments. That was my favorite rucksack/backpack. Too bad I had to throw it away bc my room got flooded by sewer water and it grew black mold on it.

Oh That Is Just Awful! I had a house fire several years ago and lost half of what I owned. It really surprised me which things I truly missed. Some folks might not think an old canvas pack is that big of a deal.... We know better. It's interesting how we can develop relationships with inanimate items, but we do. I know I have pieces of kit that I could talk for hours about our adventures together. I'm sorry for your lose. Some things are just irreplaceable.

Crazy as ruck ( _Edit_ ) In my research, your large Alice pack in non-OD is actually called 'camo green' and was selected to complement the green of the M81 woodland pattern. I didnt like it at first but I have really come to warm up to it a lot and I have my old LC-2 OD pack covered in camo green pouches and it really makes for a unique look. They also issued duffle bags in camo green.

I first saw an Army issue rucksack in Germany 1963. It had a tubular frame with a little wrap around shape at the waist. Simple OD bag, perhaps an early predecessor to ALICE I. The fellow who had it was a retread from 10th SF group in Bad Tolz, kicked out for being a loser and BS artist. Somehow he kept his ruck during his transfer and kept it on top of his wall locker. Us ordinary doggies who only had butt packs, considered it a curiosity.

Well John, that's what I would call over-the-top on backpacks. I have this disease but it rears it's ugly head on alcohol stoves - er- well camping stoves in general. I have several backpacks but only one in use at the moment and it is modern. It's just darn pretty to be truthful. And clean. It is my carry-on when I fly. I look all yuppy! I carry all the stuff I need to face the outdoors in my camper. That includes air conditioning and screens on the windows if I should open them. Oh, and a freezer for my ice cream. As I have said before, I live in South Texas where it is HOT, buggy, and someone will shoot you if you cross their land so I go glamping. And like you, my knees can't take what I use to do causally. Just turned 75 thank you very much. I do get out and carry stuff to go fishing beside a creek, called a river, with about 150 to 200 feet of a steep hill to get me there. Cardio for the day when fishing. Looking forward to watching your adventures on my iPad, lying on my queen size bed, in the a/c! Hang in the brother. Blessing, David

In the early 60s, rifle squads carried a crummy AN/PRC-6, aka prick six. It was too big, too heavy and the range was short. I drove a jeep for the S4, so I had AN/VRC-18 radios which had a little bit better range, maybe 5 miles in hilly SE Germany. I presume modern infantry radios have progressed considerably. Ideally, every rifleman would be in radio touch with his/her chain of command along with a visual map display showing where the rest of the squad/platoon was at as well as the enemy.

About 10 years ago I went on a hunt for some ALICE packs. Pretty much no surplus around me had any and the few they had were really beat up. I ended up at a shop about 1.5 hours away and they had a few milspec new med ones I got for about $50 each (frame and pack). I then hit ebay and built some Hellcats out of them. Oddly, one of them must not have been to milspec because the outside pockets were sewn all around and I just found out last week LOL. I knew a lot less about the packs then and was looking for affordable backpacking gear for short camping hikes. The nice thing about the way the pockets were typically done is that you can drop you hatchet through the gaps and don't have to really strap it down.

I apologize for the extremely late reply! For the time ALICE was designed, it was a very well thought out pack. When I was in the army, I had an issue machete with rubber sheath I attach to the webbing eyelets after I slid it behind the pocket. Great feature to keep things from flopping around. I put my ALICE series on the back burner, but I'll be continuing it in the spring. I still have a lot to try, test and share about this veteran workhorse! thanks for contributing to the conversation! Again, sorry for the late reply.

Great video great sense of humor hopefully more videos will follow. BTW they actually make a rucksack strap for cinching down ammo cans to the rucksack frame and they work a heck of alot better than the straps you were using, not sure of the exact nomenclature but they have a metal buckle and flip back on themselves once they are tightened to make an "extremely tight" and secure strap. We had a saying in the 82nd Airborne Infantry a tight pack is a light pack. The actual weight itself doesn't change but the body mechanics and the energy it takes from your load bouncing around all the time wears you out a lot quicker
@boonedockery7220
@boonedockery7220 2 жыл бұрын
Thank You Phillip! I want those straps!!!!! Even if I can't find the actual "issue" straps, I can make them if I can find a photo of them. I have tons of buckle sources. One of my best friends was with the 82nd. He dropped on the airfield in Panama, and was one of the first to arrive in Kuwait during Desert Storm. I had already ETS'd prior to Panama. I learned a lot from him as far as hacks and methodologies! The 82nd is a unique group and their ever evolving SOPs are always a source of must know information. I agree 100% with the secure load concept! I have personally help new to the outdoors folks with their pack adjustments. After they put the pack back on they look at me like I'm some kind of sorcerer or something... Thank you for your service Phillip! Please share any information any time you can. Not only I would appreciate it but so would this ever growing family! Having good advice and information from multiple sources and background is a huge benefit to all that read these comments! Thanks again Phillip! I look foreword to hearing from you in the future!

Great video and nice grab on finding the deal on all those packs. I think it will be a great pack to tote in anything you might need to place aka/redistribute wherever you may need. Also think of strap across the top like your other viewer said might be smart and also useful to a degree too knowing the way you can always make a strap work to your benefit lol. I love your ingenuity after all why not make something better if you can, and to take something as old as the Alice (hells to the yes).... I do wonder what it would be like if you turned the can the other way or is it just too wide for the pack like that? Cause if not you could pack in your can and use one of those bags you showed in the same video on top of it or another can if it Wasn't too heavy . But the bag or a dry bag and a can to leave on one trip could work on that pack like that I think...hmm. I want one now ughhhhhh My mind is clicking lol If you only knew what I went through weekly/monthly to get groceries medicine the trek ugh. It's either walk it with a cane or my wheeled walker or pay for uber and you can guess which way I would rather my $ go lol. Oh by the way can't you add 2"strap to the inside of your belt so it feels better, after all you have to wear it for long periods of time you might as well be comfortable or you won't use it. You can sew it in I think, I have seen your skills you got this...anyway just a thought I could tell it really kinda bothered ya, anyway take it easy much love to the fam ttyl Kyle

The last made model comes with a sternum strap unlike all the other Alice packs. But yes ur woodland straps r genuine to that make and model of the last year they made the Alice. I love your comment! The large ALICE is the piece of kit that can turn anyone into a pack mule! Given the design of the pack, I would recommend 200 round SAW pouches. Either ALICE or MOLLE will work. The ALICE version is more readily available than the MOLLE unless you don't mind mixing and matching colors/patterns. You could attach up to 4 on the large pack That is A LOT of extra storage space. With a little modifying you can attach a couple MOLLE Sustainment Pouches JAY JAY"S Produces Amazing Kit!! The Beast Is an Absolute Masterpiece! I want half of the items on their website! I would have already ordered one of their MOLLE PLCE Systems, but the shipping almost doubled the price, so, no Jay Jay's for Boonedockery... When you get it, I'd love to see some photos of it. Today I came across your video (and I subbed to your channel) on ALICE packs and frames and I must say you got one hell of a "collection". Awesome video btw! I'm also still using a ALICE and FILBE pack but I use it on a Mystery Ranch nice frame. It fits perfectly and you don't need to make any major adjustments to get it working. What I'm very interested in is the dedicated load hauler which fits the ALICE frame. I've never seen one before. Is it still available and if so where can I order one? Mystery Ranch does not sell load shelves or similar things like that separately. You need to buy the whole setup and they are not cheap as you know. And does the load hauler come in different colors or only in multi cam?
@boonedockery7220
@boonedockery7220 Жыл бұрын
RJ, Thank You Very much For Subscribing And for This Comment! I had no idea the Mystery Ranch frame was compatible! Is it the NICE frame? Unfortunately, the Load Hauler was an absolute stroke of luck for me. I can only think they were a batch of prototypes for the military and who ever acquired them, sold them for far less than what they were worth. Had I known they were finite, I would have bought all he had to offer them to my viewers at cost. As far as I know, no one produces a load hauler that is complete like the one I purchased and the only company that produces one that is similar sells the panel and side pouches separately and it is expensive. "IF" a reparable manufacturer were to be able to replicate it, at a similar price for the consumer (even in non Multicam) I'd send them extensive photos and measurements to do so. Looking at it, There is a lot of sewing, but not too complicated. I have a subscriber that sewed his own to fit a wooden frame he build himself, as a result of my video. It looks great! The only color that was available on the eBay listing was Multicam.

@@boonedockery7220 Yes, it's a Nice Frame and I must say it's very comfortable especially when you're carrying a lot of stuff for an extended hike over uneven terrain. As you know the Mystery Ranch Nice Frame is rigid in some way but at the same time also a flexible which makes it very strong. And the BVS system provides a bit more stability to the side which results in less sway of the pack. I know that the whole setup is certainly not really a light one but for an old(fashion) hiker like me I can say that I'm happy with it. Most people would go for ultra light but I prefer reliable ruggedness. BTW as far as I know the Mystery Ranch Guide Light frame is also compatible with the FILBE and/or ALICE pack.

@@boonedockery7220 I've seen the Wolf Pack on Ebay and it's really a very nice pack. Maybe I'm going to try that one as well. What I like about the Nice Frame is the versatility of it. There are many ways to get almost any kind of pack to fit to it. Whatever you do, the comfort of the harness remains the same. That's why I'm using it with the FILBE for the time being.

I’ve carried the medium ALICE with the frame and without the frame (as a soldier in the ARMY), both work, and are acceptable. I’ve also carried the large, with the frame of course (as a civilian), and found it way too awkward and pretty much unacceptable (at least for me). The large hangs way too far behind me hanging off my back. I found I had to bend forward at the waist pretty far to balance it. I still use the median, with frame, but I no longer use the large. I have a Granite Gear CHIEF patrol pack for large loads or a long time out. The CHIEF is much more comfortable (and expensive) than the large ALICE.

I completely agree with your assessment of the A.L.I.C.E. packs. I was a 19-Delta (Cav Scout) when I was in and rarely ever used the frame with my medium ruck.
