The scene when the Black woman threw the ball was to note that the league was segregated. There were two women who played in the Negro League. I met one of them, Mamie "Peanut" Johnson, at the Negro League Shop in MD years ago.

Jon Lovitz is so mean and obnoxious in this movie… I LOVE IT! 😂😂

I'm a makeup artist by profession, but I'm so glad they did not use old age makeup on Madonna and Gene Davis and everybody. I'm glad that they cast older actresses for the reunion scenes. Old age makeup is one of THE most difficult things to do really well and believably- and with that number of actresses who would need it, and the budget of this film, it would probably have not been as good as it could have been, and it would pull you right out of the movie- the feeling of actual time having passed, how much people change with age.. The actresses they did cast were SO spot-on perfect! The casting director should have won an award just for that. You could immediately tell who was who. Obviously, they gave us clues in the script as well, but everybody looked believable. Dottie standing next to her younger-self photograph: there is no doubt that that young woman grew into that older woman. They really did a tremendous job with that casting!!

it was always called baseball, the Women took the mens place when they went to war. Softball is totally different when it comes to the size of the ball and the style of pitching

Geena Davis has said that she believes no way Dottie would've deliberately dropped the ball and betrayed her team.

I love this movie. Don't even know how many times I've seen, at least 20, and it never gets old. An absolutely stellar cast and a fantastic and often forgotten story from history. Fun fact: all the injuries you see, like Dottie's leg, are real injuries the actors suffered. The cast played real ball and had real injuries.

The end of the movie during the credits where the older ladies are playing baseball are the real women that played in the league.

Shirley Baker likely came from a rural community. At that time, not a lot of emphasis was expended on education for women from poorer communities. This was far more common in those times. My great grandmother couldn’t read either.

The guy dancing wirh Madonna was Eddie Mekka. He played Carmine (aka the Big Ragoo) on Laverne and Shirley. He was an excellent Singer and Dancer. One of Baseball Stadium Announcers calling the game was David Lander who played Squiggy on Laverne and Shirley. The Baseball Scout was played by Jon Lovitz (from Saturday Night Live). Many of his insults and funny comments weren't in the script and were adlibs by Lovitz himself. Jimmy Duggan (Tom Hank's character) was based on the Real Manager of the Rockford Peaches former Star Player Jimmy Foxx. Kit (Lori Petty) has a Cult following as the title character in the movie Tank Girl. The horrible bruise on the player's leg was real and took over a year to heal.

Dottie dropped that ball on purpose, babies. She was the best in the league. The film made a point to show her skill...that she could catch and hold nearly any pitch, like when she fell into the dugout and came up holding the ball. The hit she took from Kitt was nothing for Dottie, she simply just decided to let her sister win in the end. Great reaction to one of my favorite movies!

Great movie! Great reaction! The end song, This Used To Be My Playground by Madonna was to be at the beginning of the movie but instead they used Now and Forever by Carol King. Madonna was upset because she knew people leave the theater without listening to the final song.

One of my favorite moments in film is when Geena Davis does the splits. She's actually crazy athletic, no knowledge to back this up, she just looks like an athlete.

I played field hockey in a plaid kilt. It was actually not bad. We wore our soccer shorts under them of course.

The father didn’t treat Dottie better. Kitt was just jealous because Dottie was great at everything and people recognized it and Dottie cast a long shadow, so Kitt was always in it. And Dottie loved her sister more than baseball, which is why she dropped that ball at home plate on purpose to make Kitt the hero and lift her up. The director of this movie made it a point to show Dottie being run into at home plate on two previous occasions by two women bigger and stronger than Kitt and not dropping the ball.

It has always amazed me that older Dottie isn’t Geena Davis in makeup but a totally different actress. The casting was so brilliant all around, especially in the older versions of the women.

Just an fyi. In the dancing hall one of the guy's dancing with Madona was Eddie Mecka (The big Ragu Carmine from Lavern and Shirly and the guy doi9ng the announcing was Squigy from the same show which Penny Marshall stared.

This is a great movie. It’s one you can watch repeatedly throughout the years. The only thing that gets to me about it is how Kit never really gets her comeuppance. It’s so unsatisfying! She basically gets rewarded in the end for being a spiteful, self absorbed, jealous, inconsiderate, tantrum throwing shrew. I hate it! There weren’t any consequences for her disgusting/hateful behavior. At no point did she ever show any love or compassion towards her own sister and the real problems she was going through. Kit didn’t deserve to win and it ruined the end of the movie for me.

I hope I'm the 8 bajillionth person in the comments to point out how incredible the Amazon reboot of this film was/is - it doubles down on the best parts of the film, exploring all the areas they were instructed to ignore in the original (like racial or queer issues), and discusses them in very real and relatable ways. Super excited to go ahead and start this, since I began writing before I even started the video because I enjoy y'all so much as reactors that I just got ahead of myself. Wonderful! you got to this movie. Jon Lovitz as the recruiter was perfect in my point of view. With the attitude of those times, big city attitude I call it being from a small town of 33,000 myself.

You should watch Tom in his prime in movie Nothing in Common, about his parents getting divorced, and both needed him. It's about his Dad, who with son had nothing in common. Great soundtrack songs in it, and he's funny and good in drama. And did you know the song in this movie ending, Used to Be My Playground, was Madonna singing? Was a hit.

75 dollars a week is the equivalent of making about $1,400 a week these days. So, about 70k a year, give or take. Pretty good money all in all. For comparison, Lou Gehrig was the highest paid star in the late 30’s and he was pulling in about it 35k a year (or roughly 700k these days).

During the Closing Credits the Ladies playing Baseball are actual members of the Girl's Baseball League. The Bruise on the girls leg was real. Those uniforms really didn't provide protection for the players. The older Dottie and Kit were older Actresses with the voices the main Actresses dubbed in.

I knew the real person that Dottie's character portrayed. Her name was Lavonne "Pepper" Pare. She also is the real composer of the league song. She was a wonderful lady and she used to tell us all the old stories long before the world knew about the league. RIP PEP

even the silliest part of this movie really happened, to an extent. the woman were made to be "cheerleader athletes."

Baseball and softball are played by the same rules, but softball uses a larger ball that hurts less when you get hit with it. It's common for girls and casual players (for example, teams from churches or businesses just looking to play recreationally, not aspiring athletes) to play softball as opposed to baseball. Dottie and Kit were playing softball in the beginning for the for the team from the dairy their parents own.

I don’t think Dottie would ever lose on purpose. Kit just clocked her. Also, Dottie also hurt herself catching the ball in the dugout so she wasn’t 100%

Yeah, the uniforms are accurate. They did indeed expect those women to play baseball in those short skirts.

The huge bruise on the woman's thigh isn't make up at all it was a real injury. So painful. Tom Hanks said it was the most fun he ever had making a movie as he got to eat what he wanted, drink beer,watch, play baseball in small towns with a great cast of people and all their families.

As expected, I'm really enjoying this reaction at the halfway point! Recently, I passed on a reaction to this film, thinking, "Next time I'm in the mood for a reaction to A League of Their Own, I can always search for that flickaroo and pick whichever channel's reacting to it." Then it showed up on your channel, and I said "HOORAY, I'm down!" (Along with You, Me, & the Movies and Andelain, your reaction channel ranks at the tippity top for me! Your reactions are always fantastic!) Also: "Why do you gotta' be so good?" is the wrong question. Kit, addlepated from living in her sister's shadow, is the embodiment of sport: striving her hardest, past reason, with a chip on her shoulder and everything to prove. Dottie, the Michael Jordan of her sport, has nothing to prove. She's amazingly talented and a class act all the way, a wonderful human being. To me, the question Kit needs to be asking *herself* is, "How good can *I* be -- and when am I ever going to just be happy for my sister and congratulate her on being such a badass?"

That bruise on Alice’s thigh was real, she got it while filming and so they included in the movie. Just another reason why they shouldn’t have worn skirts as a baseball uniform 🙄

Men players might have more power, but no male director evidently had more power than Penny Marshall at directing baseball action. It really is the best baseball movie for depicting the actual game that I can think of - "Bull Durham" a distant 2nd in that regard. Plus it's got all that emotional stuff. 😂

My favorite football movies are Necessary Roughness (1991) and Facing The Giants (2006).

The relationship between Tom Hanks and Geen Davis is so great because they didn't try to make it some kind of love triangle - it's strictly platonic and he has respect for her as a player and as a person.

During World War 2. While the men went off to War. Including the pro baseball players. Women went to work in the factories and played professional baseball in the women's league. Back then it was a different time . Women didn't go off to War and fight in combat. Today it's different. Back then Women were homemakers while men worked and was the primary source of income. All of the actresses in the movie really had to already have proven baseball/softball experience. Apparently a lot of actresses wanted to be in this movie and tried out for it but skill was also a necessity to be in this film.

Good story, but the only things in there that actually happened were that the players did go to charm school, and that they wore those awful uniforms. But women's baseball was popular from the very first. They were never in danger of being shut down, and the league lasted through the 1953 season. There were more and more major-league games on television, and for awhile, small-town teams suffered. The bruise on a player's hip that looked so horrible wasn't makeup. That was real. The actress said it took a year to heal completely.

I don't feel sorry for Kit. Kit is not a victim of anything. Kit is envious of Dottie. So much so that she distorts reality to suit her narrative. Kit is in a one-sided sibling rivalry with Dottie. Kit over exaggerates or lies about how people view & compare her to Dottie. Dottie even called her out on it at the beginning of the movie. Kit uses emotional black mail to manipulate Dottie into feeling guilty about everything & nothing. When the emotional black mail fails, she throws a tantrum & angrily lashes out. Regarding Kit's skill, she has it. We don't know if her skill is actually less or equal to Dottie's because she spends the entire movie, with exception to the baseball tryouts, mimicking Dottie's technique. Kit is a very insecure & immature young woman with low self-esteem. Kit placed herself in Dottie's shadow. No one put her
