Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Madonna star in this major-league comedy from the team that brought you Big. Hanks stars as Jimmy Dugan, a washed-up ballplayer whose big league days are over. Hired to coach in the All-American Girls Baseball League of 1943, while the male pros are at war, Dugan finds himself drawn back into the game by the heart and heroics of his all-girl team. Jon Lovitz adds a scene-stealing cameo as the sarcastic scout who recruits Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis), the baseball dolly with a Babe Ruth swing. Teammates Madonna, Lori Petty and Rosie O'Donnell round out the roster, taking the team to the World Series. Based on the true story of the pioneering women who blazed the trail, on the fields and off, for generations of athletes.

Whoever put the part in about Shirley not being able to read was genius. I think that actress was Anne Cusack and the fear/embarrassment on her face was Oscar worthy.

What I like about this is Dottie doesn't rush over to go check. She's not an idiot, she knows she owned the field out there. She might pretend to be ambivalent about the game/league, but deep down she obviously loves it and knows she's fucking great at it.

@@aidanjanemcintosh6919 True. The main reason why she plays is because it helps take her mind off of her husband being at war. She's the best player there and doesn't care about it and wants to stick to farming. Why are so many people good at things that they don't want to do?

I always saw it as Dottie didn’t put herself over others, she isn’t self centered, so she let everyone else have a look then she will take a look herself.

The scene with Shirley and Helen always gets me. And at the end, when the ladies are walking in to see the exhibit, you can hear Shirley reading the sign aloud "Baseball Hall of Fame" :')

Like the detail of Dottie not rushing to see if she made the teams. Her only concern was whether or not Kit made it and she was genuinely happy for her sister.

All those names were in cursive! I don't think they teach cursive writing anymore, since kids I met couldn't sign their names and didn't know to use a distinctive mark.

Some guys : here, women must play sports with a shirt, high heels, long flowing hair, make-up on etc... Those same guys : See !!!! women aren't as good as men in sports !!!! it's like watching a fashion show, not a display of physical prowess !

I knew Helene Vanzant's son, and I did a bit of work on a couple of her Mercedes cars for her. One of which, a 230, had once belonged to Lucille Ball! I saw the paperwork. I understand they were at least acquaintances, if not friends.
