What’s the A League of their Own movie about?
During World War II when all the men are fighting the war, most of the jobs that were left vacant because of their absence were filled in by women. The owners of the baseball teams, not wanting baseball to be dormant indefinitely, decide to form teams with women. So scouts are sent all over the country to find women players. One of the scouts, passes through Oregon and finds a woman named Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis from Thelma & Louise and Stuart Little), who is incredible. He approaches her and asks her to try out but she's not interested. However, her sister, Kit (Lori Petty) who wants to get out of Oregon, offers to go. But he agrees only if she can get her sister to go. When they try out, they're chosen and are on the same team. Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks from Big, Forrest Gump and Philadelphia), a former player, who's now a drunk, is the team manager. But he doesn't feel as if it's a real job so he drinks and is not exactly doing his job. So Dottie steps up. After a few months when it appears the girls are not garnering any attention, the league is facing closure till Dottie does something that grabs attention. And it isn't long Dottie is the star of the team and Kit feels like she's living in her shadow.

The reactions from Dottie, Kit, and Marla are perfect. They indicate heavily the positions they play. Marla took a traditional baseman's stance. She plays second so fielding fast grounders or a second base pick is natural. Kit ducked because that's traditionally what pitchers do. You dont normally get the reaction time to catch a line drive so ducking to give your short stop or second baseman time to get it is the best option. Dottie is a catcher and is used to having to catch fast throws from any baseman or fielder. A third baseman throws fast but not the same as a pitcher or fielder. She can't shrink from a throw so she just catches it like any other throw.

Fond memories in the '90s of having a sleepover with one of my best friends, having homemade personal pizzas (her mom made up about 10 inches dough for all of us - me, friend, her brother and sister, and we added own toppings), and watching this on VHS. Of course we'd both seen it before.

I remember when they were casting this . They had trouble finding actresses that were athletic . Most actresses have backgrounds in dance , singing etc unlike American male actors most of whom play some sports at least . The extras are actual athletes . It’s easy to tell from their fielding and throws

I remember them talking about casting Miracle much the same. It was far easier for them to cast real hockey players and teach them how to act, than to cast actors and teach them how to play hockey. That's when you can tell great sports movies from good ones.

In Penny Marshall's autobiography, she talked about casting this film. Many actresses auditioned and would have been great from an acting standpoint, but Penny insisted that the cast also had to be decent ballplayers. So, baseball tryouts were part of the audition process. Quite a few well-known actresses didn't make the cut because they couldn't play baseball worth a darn!

About 15 years ago I took care of a elderly woman who played in the real league and one of the characters in the movie was based off of her. I was an ER Nurse and 3 times over about 2 years I was at her bedside when the doctors told her family that she was not going to make it. The third time the granddaughter who was in her 30's came over to talk to me privately. She asked if I really thought that this time she was going to die because she had survived the previous hospitalizations. She had called in family from out of state those two previous times to say their final goodbyes to her and she was unsure about contacting them this time. I just said "I don't know" and we kind of laughed about it. I never saw them again. My only regret was not asking which character was based off of her.

@@Nepthu look don't mean anything and Sylvester Stallondid prove muscles mean nothing. In this movie it was her character and talent for the game as a child that made her team like it was and the game but also her love for her little sister to push her to beat her because the little sister desired to earn it without it being said because of her big sister and that she possessed talent of her own. The people were caught up on how the big sister looked not her -herself. As far as Sylvester Stallon he also proved that it was not muscles but his desire to win. The tenacity to fight with all he had. He didn't train to build mass depths of muscles he trained to build strength, endurance and muster pain and not get knocked out. It was mind over matter not muscle. It was also because he seen the opponent didn't see it as a sport and was violating rules and lost a close friend. In another take of Rocky he wasn't about to let Adrian his wife see him go down or his son. His muscles didn't win it was his heart driven by passion fueled by relentless love and he had a great team that believed in him and a community. He stayed on his feet and that was more than half the battle. He didn't quit or give up and sure as hell wasn't fearful of muscles. Slyvesror

@@HariSeldon913 That’s for damn sure. I do wonder if women like her always condemn women such as the ones who enrolled in the league because they are actually projecting the fact that they’re jealous because they either can’t do it, or missed their opportunity and see no reason why the next generation shouldn’t be deprived. And not just in sports, but any arena (I.e. Doctors, lawyers, etc.).

Funt fact: Debra Winger left the movie once she learned Madonna signed on because Winger knew it was a studio gimmick. Madonna never played ball before. Originally Mae was supposed to play 3rd base but Madonna stunk at playing infield so she was moved to outfield. It turned out Geena Davis was a much ball player than Winger. Lori Petty once played ball in a boy's league. Everyone was required to try out for the movie. Penny Marshall said if you can't play ball you can't be in the movie...unless you're a mega pop icon Madonna. Marisa Tomei didn't make the cut. Farrah Fawcett was too old.

@@66Bunn I totally forgot about CHARIOTS OF FIRE. Good catch. You can't go wrong with ROCKY for boxing. There's a cult movie about small time horse racing called CASEY'S SHADOW. I would rank SLAP SHOTS with other satire sports movies like SEMI PRO, SEMI-TOUGH, STROKER ACE, TALLADEGA NIGHTS. As far as surfing movies, most of them are crap, which involves coming of age subplot, like BIG WEDNESDAY. However that movie has some of the best cinematography.
